The changes in Manchester are phenomenal, I can remember when the CIS tower was the tallest building, it's got to be acknowledged that Manchester is now the second city

Yes, I can just about remember when the sea of Esther, what is the tallest, but it was shortly followed by what was called the Sunley Tower now City Tower. As for “Secondcity“, I don’t see Manchester is 2nd to anywhere, I prefer to say something like northern metropolis. I once had a discussion about this with a colleague from Birmingham, and although I was being very diplomatic, as I always am, we still nearly ended up having a scrap!

A tall building or two dose not make you the second city population does so Birmingham with 2million + people in and around it makes it the second largest city in the UK 🇬🇧 😉 nice try but no chance in truth if Birmingham decides to go down the tall building route wich I don't think it should it would eclipse Manchester a number of the city of London international banks have made it there new home as well as city workers from London and this trend is is growing rapidly London and Birmingham are becoming increasingly more connected than ever before

Sorry mate the City of Manchester is not the second City of England/UK and has never been and never will be, it is the 6th largest City in the UK after Liverpool. The City of Birmingham is the 2nd largest City in England/UK due to it's Population size of 1.5 million Citizens compared to the population size of the City of Manchester 560,000 and Birmingham City Council is the largest Municipal Council in Europe and the size of the City of Birmingham dwarfs the City of Manchester and that is endorsed by the UK Government. Do not get Greater Manchester which is not a City mixed up with the City of Manchester, two different things mate. So no it wont be acknowledged that Manchester is the second City as it isn't full stop.

I like to see cities building up, I hope it reduces the need to build in the countryside.

I’m not sure if it really will make a huge amount of difference. There are many ex-industrial sites around Greater Manchester where they could build also.

Manchester tried to build an underground line - the Picc Vic but it didn’t work out. Instead it has Metrolink.

Nice. Manchester just needs more if unique shaped buildings. Spherical, pyramid, or other complex designs as seen in London. These will add more character to the skyline

Manchester is actually taking a similar approach that New York took when it started growing in its early days. Simpler design to keep costs low and reduce construction time. I’m sure as Manchester skies gets more matured you’ll start to see more unique buildings which will be more for the luxury market like you see in London.

Yes, very good points. Reading your words, I immediately thought of Shanghai, not visited yet to the Skyliners famous with spherical things on it. Who knows what’s coming to Manchester.

Looking forward to this video when it drops. Manchester has been on the rise for a while now. Will expect that Leeds and Glasgow can begin putting up taller nicer buildings like we are presently seeing in Manchester and to some extent, Birmingham

Leeds already has some great tall(-ish) buildings as featured in my Leeds video. I’ve not done Glasgow yet, it’s on the list. I am shooting in London today! :)

@@retronostalgicThe new tallest is Viadux 2 at 76 storeys. Every week there is another one announced. There is rumoured to be one on the Regent Road retail park site, which will be 80 storeys. Manchester will soon be a mega city.

Well, as another comment aside, Manchester is going the way of New York, around 100 years later. There are plenty more tall buildings to come, what’s the skyline going to look like in a few years time?

This is one of the best comments I have ever received. I am generally optimistic but there are some project I've not been so optimistic about, for instance Piccadilly Gardens. After 20 years, it turned out exactly as I'd expected. But most of the developments seem positive. Thanks very much for your updates. Manchester has stolen a march on Birmingham and is definitely the second city in most peoples books. I hope HS2 will encourage more investment and mire talent to locate there.

There are amazing developments underway and due to start soon in Birmingham and running till the 2030s. This includes Curzon St Station, Smithfield, Digbeth, Paradise Circus, Eastside, and a lot more. Birmingham is the 2nd city but Manchester is highly dynamic of course with the most construction sites outside London I believe. When they're both linked and to London via HS2 all will benefit.

It doesn't matter who's books you read, the City of Manchester is not the second City it is only the 6th largest City in the UK, the City of Birmingham officially holds the title of the UK's 2nd and 2nd largest City.

Very glad to receive your positive feedback. For five years I lived in the Gulf region, except vacation periods, and I missed Manchester very much. Occasionally I miss living in the Middle East, but the weather in Manchester is much nicer. Which place have you been exiled to?

There is a new tower being built on the Albert Bridge House site. It is quirky.

Very good footage and information. I feel once the Viadux has been built next to the Beetham tower it will even out the landscape somewhat and it won’t feel so isolated looking.

Going up thick and fast mate, wonder how many will be left empty for most of the time though. Great to hear the Granada TV sign is going back up, brilliant. So true about the Deansgate Square development being one of the most over photographed, great if you get the right angle at sunset too

I have noticed quite a lot of the residents in the Deansgate Square Towers are students, obviously paid for by rich parents but who cares? Can’t say I wouldn’t do the same and it’s all money coming into Manchester

I’m not sure. Many apartments are left empty - like the penthouse at the top of 432 Central Park in NYC, purchased and fully furnished but never been occupied. Yes I’m glad the Granada sign will return.

Great video. Beetham and Elizabeth towers are my favourites. One minor point though - Manchester is very much it’s own place and always has been, it needs no tenuous comparisons as a sort of ‘lesser’ shadow of New York, Dubai or Berlin etc.

The reference to Hudson Yards in New York is one of a number of echoes or strange coincidences between the two places, I’ve lived in both of them. I made a video about the echoes and I like to highlight any that I discover. What I’m not keen on is saying Manchester is the second city (to London). Manchester is very much its own place and always has been - well said!

@@AidanEyewitness With the new developments, I find myself wishing they would develop life at street level. Entering Deansgate Square feels a bit like a vertical gated community, as though you have come into a space where you shouldn’t be. Perhaps this will change as the rest of Great Jackson St evolves. The reason Beetham works so well is because it relates to Deansgate and meets the street with the bustling hotel entrance. Great Ancoats/Swan Streets are developing along those lines.

Great video and drone footage Aidan….I think there are a number of tall schemes in the pipe line still - St Michael’s even Jackson Street isn’t finished in terms of more towers. However, I do think the councils have to crack on with the horrible mess that is Piccadilly so called ‘gardens’…and the adjoining top end of Market Street and the old Debenhams building…that coupled with the wrongly placed Metrolink stop should be demolished and built on High Street to open up the vista on Market street. It really is a mess at the moment. Just to finish, what on Earth is going on with the neglected but beautiful old ‘Theatre Royal’ on Peter street ? Too long now is has lain waste by it’s Hotel owners. Manchester needs to bring this back into use quickly.

Thanks. The drone footage is by Milo Kaye. Don’t talk to me about Piccadilly Gardens. That saga has been going on for over 20 years now. As for re-siting the Metrolink stop it would probably cost a fortune. I’ve often wondered couln’t they have lowered the platforms in the stations as other systems such as the Luas in Dublin. Then the stops wouldn’t tale up so much space. Too late now! Many thanks for your positive comments!

Viadux 2 will be 76 Storeys. Is that a Supertall? The Regent Park one in Salford is going to be 80 storeys.

I'd like to see some new individual looking buildings in Manchester. Gherkin, Shard for example.

That won’t happen any time soon - it’s down to cost. Building designs of that type cost far more to build and therefore, you have to charge far more to let or buy them. Manchester cannot support those prices. For example the most expensive apartments in the Shard cost in the region of £45 Million, when you’re charging that much, you can build pretty much what you want. The most expensive apartments in Manchester go for about £2.5 Million - that means things have to be built to a tight budget.

Instead of the Quad Towers. I can put that to the management and see what they say. That’s one of my favourite comedy sketches of all time.

Because the towers are around the outer center not replacing buildings in the centre it might not take away from Manchesters character. There is one thats gonna go up in the centre named micheal but they are mainting the beutiful front of the building there.

Yes, that’s true about the buildings on the periphery, but the Saint Michaels development - why did they choose to name it after a saint? - is very close to Albert Square. I’ll be doing an update on that soon.

Any news about renovating the old Arndale building? It looks hideous, requires a new look.

It should’ve been renovated 20 years ago. I’m not aware of any renovation plans for the Arndale exterior. I’ll keep an eye out.

Yes, it's often called that, though the Manchester skyscrapers are a fraction of the size of the ones in New York. New York had a 100 year head start, though!

Most of these apartments are occupied by young people, often 2 sharing. To be honest, one thing Manchester is not short of is jobs, and well paying jobs if you have the right skills. I changed jobs last year, had five interviews and had 4 job offers - in the IT sector, particularly programming which is what I do, there are loads of unfilled jobs in Manchester.

That’s very interesting. It seems that there are plenty of people in employment in Manchester who are able to pay the rent for these apartments.

@@AidanEyewitness Sheffield is built on 7 hills as is Rome. I think Sheffield have got it right. They haven't gone down the tower block route and have instead concentrated on low-level buildings and green space but with a few towers dotted about. It makes for a more attractive city in my humble opinion.

I've gone over to metres due to various recent factors. Today's construction industry uses metric measurements. In my Irwell video I gave the distance in metres and yards. It's easy to convert metres to feet approximately, just divide by three.

And now 5 more square boring looking towers are going to fill the gap between deans gate square and the new 360 tower…. I love Manchester but how dare the developers just fill the skyline with buildings like all look the same London get stunning unique looking towers and we get squares.

I know what you mean. I think it all boils down to the fact that more imaginative, more complex buildings cost more money and London has more of it than Manchester. At the same time I don’t think every new building in London is an architectural masterpiece. Many thanks.
