MANCHESTER BUILDING BOOM CENTRAL SE | Plus a New Book on the Rise of MCR

This video documents some of the changes and new construction in the area of central Manchester to the south east. We start in Ardwick, continue past the UMIST Campus and no to Mayfield Park and a new construction site on Great Ancoats Street.
Also featured is a new book written by Andy Spinoza who formerly ran PR companies. He has had a unique view on the development of Manchester over 40 years. His book features two of my photographs.
manchesteruniversitypress.co....
Finally we look at the Old Fire Station on London Road, where renovation work continues slowly.
Very soon, the HS2 project is going to transform the south east area of central Manchester and I am going to document the development before during and after in future videos.

It's lovely to see these areas being rejuvenated, and with the incorporation of green spaces. I think greenery can be used to beautify almost any building.

Yes, the last time it happened in this part of Manchester wars, when the Commonwealth Games took place in 2002. Industrial areas to the east along the river. Medlock cleaned up and renovated.

I think it used to be that, but for quite a few years it's become a lot more spruced up and maybe gentrified. I can see the nightlife is still good.

Very interesting. I once worked with a member of the Stewart family, Peter Stewart, on the early website, Virtual Manchester, around 1997, 1998. Those were exciting times. Yes, Mayfield Park is great, but I think it’s going to get very crowded in the summer!

I didn’t realise that the McDonald Hotel had gone, shows how often I go around there. Heard on the news tonight that HS2 from Crewe to Manchester could be scrapped to save money, just hope that doesn’t have an effect on the Piccadilly East development. We used to go down that cobbled street as kids, on whatever we had that day

There’s something very wrong with the way projects are planned when they keep threatening to cut parts of them to save money. Yes I’ve driven down Jutland Street many times, great fun, especially with children in the back of the car!

@@AidanEyewitness Funnily enough, I drove down it today, not by choice. I dropped a film into the lab in Ancoats on Silk Street, went to the Northern Quarter with the idea of spending an hour in Town shooting Street Photography before making my way to Salford Quays/Media City as was my destination in the first place but after getting out of the car and just getting my camera out I noticed the traffic really starting to build up, I was parked near Clampdown Records but just before Back Piccadilly so rather than try and pull out into the queue on Piccadilly I made my way back to Dale St and headed for Great Ancoats Street, didn’t realise City had had an early kick off. Suffice to say, never bothered with the Quays but ended up with a drive down memory Lane through Ancoats, Beswick, Openshaw, Clayton, Newton Heath, Monsall, Crumpsall then to the place I lived before moving to Horwich, Higher Broughton, onto the East Lancs, M61 and home. NIGHTMARE!!!

Manchester is now creating more jobs than London, to cut HS2 to it, is the economics of the madhouse. A bit like Chicago not having links to New York. Crewe takes priority over Manchester? You couldn’t Legislate for the clowns in Westminster and the way they organise infrastructure. HS2 is going to finish up a commuter train for those to the North of London at this rate. It should link Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow.

Nice to see what a transformation they've made of an area with Mayfield Park, lovely. Hopefully the HS2 Station will actually be built. It's really a shame that the UK didn't adopt high speed trains in the 20th century like a lot of European countries did. The cost of doing it now is almost prohibitive but I'm sure the results will be magnificent. Riding Crossrail last summer was a revelation on how quite and comfortable public transport can be.

Well, as far as I know, HS2 is going ahead. They’ve already started building the line to Birmingham and they are doing preparatory work on the section leading into Manchester, which will come through south Manchester via a long tunnel. I once travelled on the Shinkansen in Japan. It was fantastic.

A lot of churches in Manchester were demolished during the 20th century: St Peters (St Peters Square), St John’s, St Michael’s (Angel Meadow), St George’s survived and became an apartment building. The Reform Synagogue on Jackson St is about to be demolished. Saint Andrew’s Church in the photo looks magnificent, but it was in a bad place. Now, however, if it had been saved it would be a great asset for the newly renovated residential area.

Hope they construct HS2 Underground and not have it running on stilts as the government insist…it will be a blight on the city landscape…we must fight this decision - however, I will not see the benefit of HS2 now in my late 60’s…😂 HS2 will take 15/20 years getting to the city - going off the the billions extra it will take to complete the Manchester section.

When did the regeneration of Manchester city centre actually start then Aidan

  • @AidanEyewitness

    @AidanEyewitness

    Жыл бұрын

Well that's difficult to say. I would say the recent regeneration was already underway prior to the bomb of 1996, which accelerated the regeneration. The Beetham was completed in 2007 then there was the crash of 2008. That caused things to stop. Many building projects were paused or abandoned. Things slowly gathered pace and they are currently at full swing, but is another crash round the corner?

Many churches were demolished in the 1960s. At the time they would’ve justified the destruction of St Andrews by saying there was no longer a congregation as this was now an industrial area. They were oblivious to the architectural beauty of the building and couldn’t have foreseen that half a century later this would turn back into a residential district.

Opinions are divided on Brutalist architecture. Who is to decide what stays or goes? The council planning committee. If a building is listed it can’t be demolished (in theory). This one is not listed. Many thanks for your comment! :)
