This video shows the homecoming of Manchester 436, a 1936 Crossley 'Mancunian' bus that spent over fifty years in a field in use as a caravan before being rescued by Manchester's Museum of Transport. Now, the task begins to raise funds and start work to put 436 back on the road.

In The 1930's, A Manchester Bus usually meant across the bus. The proud company of Crossley Motors Limited based in The City turned out hundreds of buses to carry Mancunians to their work and their play.Crossley Buses were famous for their workmanship and their smooth ride. And for 20 Years, Crossley was one of the major bus providers for the City. Eventually The Crossley Factory closed and Crossley Buses made their last journey to the scrayard, Except one, Number 436.Which survived for 50 Years as a caravan in Shropshire until in June 2006 it was brought to The Museum Of Transport where eventually it will be restored to it's original condition. For a Bus that's over 70 Years Old, The condition of 436 is remarkable. The bodywork is straight and there is not as much corrosion as their might be expected, But restoring 436 Bus will still be a mammoth task. There is no engine, no gear box, no differential and there are many other missing features including seats. For now the job is to stop any further detertation and to keep 436 clean. While the long job starts to try and find replacement running units. It will take tens of thousands of pounds to return Bus Number 436 to running order. So if you would like to help put Number 436 back on the road, Please leave a small donation in the collecting tin at the front of the Bus or in The Museum Shop. Every penny will help us.

One of the illustrations above shows an earlier version of the mid-'30s 'Crossley' with simpler blinds than those seen on the unrestored '436': did '436' ever have those more-primitive blinds (when new) that were supported by slipboards which provided route details ?
