Managing Curtailment 2030 by Paul Blount

Decarbonisation of Irelands electricity system is one of a number of important pillars to set Ireland’s economy on a sustainable pathway. Government has recently set out its ambition to generate 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and this will likely require fundamental changes to the electricity system in Ireland. If we simply continue to add more wind generation to the system as it exists today, a significant amount of the available renewable energy would be wasted / curtailed due to excess generation at times of high wind. In this talk, the results of an SEAI funded research project will be presented, which seeks to illustrate the most important system changes required to enable this volume of renewable generation on the system.
