I'm going with somewhere between 8 and 9, although it's closer to 9 than 8.

That's gotta be one of the worst ways to die- feeling the pain and the shark torturing you knowing you're going to die before that final chomp

I've watched Jaws at least 50 times during my lifetime. It still makes me uncomfortable every time I watch it, particularly this scene. Shaw's screaming is just haunting. Steven Spielberg has made so many outstanding movies, but Jaws may still be his greatest achievement.

Nah its hilarious because it's like a fairground ride how he's slowly descending towards the shark and he can't abandon the ride, kicks in desperation to avoid the shark's mouth and then the confirmation when you hear the first bite crunch and the way he screams looking at the shark as if the shark is going to stop just because he screamed.

0:04 looks pretty much like a real great white

Its supposed to be the water/air rushing, but it's done with cinematic licence to make it seem like it's roaring.

This wasn't the planned ending for the movie. The original ending was like in the novel, where the shark was shot with a harpoon gun underwater. They were going to do the scene with real sharks and a stuntman in a "shark proof cage". To make the sharks look bigger they found a midget stuntman and made a smaller "shark proof cage" - after the first set of takes they pulled the stuntman out of the water and while he was getting ready for the next set of takes a shark came in and completely destroyed the "shark proof cage". After they sorted all that out, and it came time for the stuntman to go back in the water, apparently he couldn't be found anywhere. They devised this alternative ending because it could be filmed with the mechanical shark.

You’re correct about all the events that happened with the cage and stuntman. I think the shark tearing up the cage resulted in Hooper living because they couldn’t finish the shots they wanted and the footage of the shark tearing up the cage was so spectacular they wanted to use it in the movie. The reason ending was changed is because Spielberg wanted a more dramatic ending and it to literally end it with a bang. Somebody told him that the audience isn’t go for the shark getting blown up like that and Spielberg said if have the audience for 1 hr 58 min then I’ll have them for the final 2 minutes and so they’ll go along with the ending. The original ending you’re referring to has the Shark bleeding out to death like the novel and that wasn’t a satisfying ending enough for Spielberg. Now I’m trying to jog my memory and you’re right it did cause them to change the scene to the shark getting shot above the water. Then what I’m thinking of is instead if the harpoon Spielberg changed it to the container getting shot to make the shark blow up. Well It’s obvious we both saw the same documentary 😂 and for anyone who hasn’t seen documentaries about the making of Jaws I highly recommend it because its a miracle they were able to finish the movie and that it turned out as great as it did.

I've seen this movie a hundred times but our community theater showed it tonight so I got to experience it on the big screen. And only tonight did I notice that at the :20 mark, the air tank rolled over onto Quint's hand and that's why he slid down into the mouth of the shark.

Its a scene that was originally going to be in the original cut in which the Shark had killed and eaten Matt Hooper in the attack scene in the cage. Hence the blood. They obviously had filmed it or had filmed this scene with the intention of filming the scene later but likely scrapped it in favor of Hooper staying alive.
