13 years ago, I designed a 17 foot canoe that used two 4x8 sheets of 1/4 inch CDX plywood & two 20 foot spruce 1x4's. It was a project with my 15 year old grandson. We designed it "on the run" with only fewbasic sketches to convey the basic ideas. It turned out very good. Only wish we could've afforded marine plywood. Over the years stored on saw horses outside, some entrapped water allowed rot in a few places. It is a "one off" canoe, like no other on earth. Until he gets inspired to renovate it & put fiberglass instead of the paint, it is shrinkwraped & hung from the ceiling of a shed. Getting married & other things of life has allowed it to be set aside. We were so proud when it was first put into the river for it's maiden voyage & it performed better than we could have hoped for. 😊

I built my first boat with my father when I was 12. It was an 8 foot Pram Dinghy. It was a great little boat. I learned a lot about woodworking from my father. I miss him and my first little boat. I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything in the world. Watching this video brought back a flood of great memories. Thank you😊

Very interesting, but nailing the plastic to the frame will not last. As the boat is used, the nails will gradually pull out. Screws would work much better. Also the joins between each piece of plastic have to be sealed against water coming in. How do you do that? Some kind of tape or adhesive or liquid that you could melt with a heat gun might work.

THE BEST BARREL BOAT I'VE EVER SEEN. THE CRAFTSMAN IS A GENIUS.

That thing will leak like a sieve at the seams. Poly has to be heat welding at the seams with a nitrogen gas feed. No adhesive will "stick" to poly for long.

Actually, hot glue sticks really well to HDPE and in water will never come loose due to cool temperatures.

А тут, даже если эта лодка развалится, ничего страшного не произойдет. Главное спасательный круг с собой возить 😅

По сути, человек нашел материал в виде бочек.Им мог быть любой листовой материал,но видимо бочки оказались доступны.Все равно уважаю мастера

Главное ведь в чем, человек из подручного материала, минимум инструмента - дал вам надежду, что и вы можете сделать а может и лучше.

Как уже заметили другие комментаторы в России такие бочки стоят немало,потому что им найдется не мало применений. Дешевле купить листовой пластик в магазине. Кроме того попадается всякий упаковочный материал с подходящими свойствами. У нас иногда упаковка лучше чем содержимое.

не - тут самое смешное что этот деятель пробивает их гвоздями, в то время как есть простейшая технология пайки этого материала, это же полиэтилен. А шпангоуты можно было бы вклеивать или так же впаивать в уже цельный корпус.

У меня такая бочка просто стояла в гараже. Через 10 лет стала хрупкой, при том что окон нет и есть отопление.

I really enjoyed watching this build, the use of those plastic barrels is a great idea. Much more resistant to damage than wood and fiberglass I think. We have a lot of coral here and we would need to slowly find our way around them because of possible damage to the wooden hull then the thought of needing to repair. I use my plastic kayak without much difficulty in the same situation. This plastic boat would be ideal. Thank you for a great video!!!!

Строительство лодки начинается с киля. А его здесь нет🤣. Планшир в роли каркасной детали, так себе идея. Пластиковая обшивка держит шпангоуты😅, а не наоборот. Про гвозди говорить не буду. У автора очень своеобразное понятие о сопромате и конструировании😅. Хотя, как способ убить время, вполне подойдет. Только далеко от берега на этом "Титанике" заплывать категлрически не рекомендуется.

А космический корабль он может сделать из железных бочек ? Или тазик только из отходов тары. Племя тумбо- юмбо-барабан у которых запас словарный 200 слов может этому научиться в течении 2-3 месяцев. И даже молоток могут на свалке отходов найти и гвозди кривые. А старую рессору от автомобиля разогреют на костре и это станет паяльником. Удобная и дармовая штучка для вылавливания мутанта рыбки из загрязнённого химикатами водоёма. - Ноги в воде не расплавятся от кислот.

Try and repair holes in HDPE , you need a reducing flame, and no oxidation, special epoxy. Problem is extremely low surface energy.

@@catsupchutney I can see that f you want to bond the plastic. Mechanical repairs, much like the inner tube,gasket are probably the way to go. Also, have you ever tried to poke a hole in a plastic drum? I'm thinking these boats are pretty robust.

Watched my grandfather build a canoe from plastic barrels even added a Kiel in center of bottom !!

Могу подсказать как сделать эту лодку погружной на глубину 2 метра и дышать в ней пока рассматриваешь рыбок в иллюминатор . Фотоаппарат не подскажу как сделать - и он его не сможет сделать. Пусть рисует красками из глины этих рыбок.

That boat must be a barrel of fun.

Once the sections of the barrel are nailed to the ribs of the canoe would it maybe be an idea to go along the drum where the nailed edges are with a heat-gun? Not to melt it but just so that the plastic readjusts to it’s new shape and isn’t putting unnecessary strain on the nails as it try’s to spring back to its original shape? I dunno. Seems like a good idea to me with my limited knowledge of plastics and physics.

Vac. formed PE drums are actually quite thin, easily punctured by a branch or stone, and virtually impossible to fix holes in. Rotomoulded kayaks and sit on tops are generally thicker and multi layered.

Logically it appears all well, but theoretically speaking, those iron nails along the bottom seams, will over time, with exposure to water, give way , leading to water ingress. Its better if the plastic seams are flame welded for water tightness, and a few nut bolts amongst those nails will make it more reliable. That water drum in the front has probably been filled with sand or gravel in order to counter balance the weight of the man and the motor behind, which is not the case with a wooden canoe. Finally, i recommend a prayer and a life jacket along with the BOARDING PASS 😂

I built one of these except instead of plastic I used an old pallet and a baby stroller and built an unpowered downhill go-kart.
