Man Speaks 25 Languages (With English Subtitles)

Follow me on Instagram: / gabrielpoliglota
Polyglot Gabriel Silva rants (in different languages) about fighting intolerance of all kinds and how languages connect people. Visit the blog at: www.fluentasap.com List of Languages Spoken: 1. English 2. French 3. Italian 4. Russian 5. Mandarin Chinese 6. Croatian 7. Spanish 8. German 9. Romanian 10. Egyptian Arabic 11. Brazilian Portuguese 12. Persian 13. Japanese 14. Dutch 15. Catalan 16. Czech 17. Turkish 18. Ukrainian 19. Indonesian 20. Afrikaans 21. Hebrew 22. Polish 23. Greek 24. Tagalog 25. Korean
Note: the subtitles have "free" translations in order to convey the meaning of the message while respecting the differences between languages.
Text (English translation): You know, I am sick and tired of witnessing intolerance towards race, religion, nationalities, you name it! I mean this is the 21st century, right? And even where there's tolerance, there's still such distance between people. Often like there is a invisible wall between us. What I noticed is I can break through that wall, and connect with someone by speaking their language. Through that I have built this passion for languages. So I will tell a story, in different languages, about acceptance. I will also chat about why this is the key to language learning, but the main point here is connecting with people from everywhere!
I'll tell you a story about acceptance and friendship beyond cultural differences, and how I think that accepting people and making friends of all cultures: beyond religion, race, or nationality makes the world a much better place. I immigrated to Canada from Brazil when I was 17 years old and I knew few people here. Initially, I knew my host family and almost no one else. I already spoke English, since I started learning English when I was around 10 years old . It took me around eight years to become fluent in English I went to a good English school (in Brazil) for six years, however it took me another two years in Canada to become completely fluent (in English) . When I arrived in Canada, I could already communicate (most of the time) However, my accent was ridiculous and also people often asked me to repeat what I was saying To be honest, it took me a while to understand what people were saying (in English) .
Fortunately, I had a very patient best friend in Canada who would repeat sentences many times (when necessary) . This friend, along with a handful of other friends here in Canada made me feel like at home in a new place they didn't care I was from a different culture and that I had a ridiculous accent and it's people like this who make the world a better place for everyone I thought I was terrible at learning languages because it took so long for me to learn English, but my friends helped me and that led me to learn new languages and I built a passion for different cultures I set out to meet people from different cultures and learn new languages Isn't it great to see the surprised look in the face of a traveler in your country when he unexpectedly realizes you speak his language? Mister? Miss? Good morning! I understand some Arabic (but not that well) . To be honest, in order to break the ice, one doesn't need to worry about fluency. Saying a few words is (often) enough . But in reality many people lose heart just as they start learning a language I think that many people stop learning languages because they are too impatient . If they aren't learning fast enough, they think they aren't good at learning languages . Maybe you think you just aren't "talented" at learning languages But what if it's because you've been learning (methods) the wrong way?
Some people ask me if I have a photographic memory . Maybe I could read or hear a new word and learn it immediately. But no!
Instead, I would need to write it and repeat it hundreds of times . After forgetting it dozens of times . Without a memorization (learning) system, my memory is terrible . Anyone can learn languages even with a bad memory . It doesn't matter how old you are and even if you are very busy or even if you have the attention span of a six-year-old child . Trust me, when you learn the right habits, you will have lots of time to learn a new language . I think that, to learn a language, you need to be really keen. You should stay interested in the (language learning) process . I believe that it's really important to use your curiosity to drive you to learn new languages . The more curious a person you are, the better it is . I can not help falling in love with the culture of the language that I learn and it happens every time I learn a new language . This passion for culture can help you learn (languages) faster . But just passion won't enable you to speak fluently, you need the right method(s)...

Haha its really unbelievable how many people point out that this dude needs to "practise more on x language". Whats the point of saying that? Hes clearly practising all of these languages and eventually they will all be stronger. Love this video, great message as well. Thanks for sharing. Props!

Frederik Rasmussen It is called constructive criticism, it's to help them know what are some areas to improve on and some things the individual can do that will help them be understood more clearly. It's not to be taken negatively. But in a positive learning and helping way. I speak Chinese and his tones were off quite a bit so the understanding wasn't there, but hey it still was impressive. When I talk with native speakers of China, they give me feedback on some of my pronunciation so I could improve and be much more understood. So hay, it's amazing how he transitioned from one language to another, but yes all of us can improve. Practicing to sound and speak like a native speaker is what one should achieve in any given. language.

You did not quite understand my point I believe. Basically saying "Your X language needs more practise." Is stating the obvious. They say it without even knowing wether he's actually trying to improve them. Improving languages takes time, so yes, of course he needs to practise more on a given language. Noone is perfect, even in their native tongues. However, If somebody tells you that you should place 把 in front of the object instead of behind, then he or she is actually giving some constructive criticism on your Chinese; a concrete way to improve. Everybody needs to get their intonations right. Its not something they need to be told;)

no way they'll be stronger. he needs to pick 1 or 2 and lift them up to fluency. rinse wash repeat. I'm not just saying this to say it. he says he "speaks" 25 languages, yet there were languages in which I couldn't get the idea of what he was saying(one of which was my native language)

    1. He's not a native English speaker. You clearly didn't actually watch the video, nor bother to read the subtitles or description. His native language is Portuguese. 2. He has spent much of his life living in Canada, where French is an official language. Some Canadians live in areas where French is spoken more than English.

everyone commenting is telling him how he needs to work on this, or fix that. Native speakers correcting him saying he isn't that good... I am pretty sure most of the people commenting can't speak 2 or more, and far fewer more than 3, let alone 25! Props to this guy. Well done, amazing!!!!! Besides, speaking is only 1/3 of the equation. Understanding what someone else is saying is another 1/3... but listening, really listening to what someone has to say - that is the remaining 1/3. I know so many people who only speak 2/3 of their own language - because they don't know how to listen.

Currently I'm studying in Canada, and I'm telling all my new friends about my language, because none of them knew it before I told them. I like the story, Gabriel!! I finally understand--to some extent--KZread videos in Portuguese. I started studying at university well over 20 years ago, but due to health and money problems I didn't keep up with it. For almost 2 years I've been listening to videos in Portuguese with almost no success...often for hours a day. Usually. When I started studying Swahili, and I had been speaking with Brazilians on Skype for about a year and a half, I would go back to Portuguese videos and get it! Now I can follow videos in Portuguese pretty well, sometimes. THE STORY YOU TOLD IS JUST HOW I FEEL! GREAT, ENCOURAGING STORY!

with turkish you just have an accent, if you speak turkish to a few turkish tourists or watch turkish videos you'll improve in no time. But in the video i can clearly understand what you are saying. "bana güvenin, yeni alışkanlıklar edindiğinizde, yeni bir dil öğrenmek için bol bol zamanınız olacak." Turkish is pretty hard to learn and understand but since you are able to use a complex word like "edindiğinizde" you pretty much got it down and just need to work on pronunciation. When you want to add another language to your list you can learn azerbaijani. It is like a different dialect of Turkish. It has the same language structure. They have introduced words from russian and persian but you souldnt have a problem with that.

You're amazing! I speak 5 languages, but I can't tell a coherent story switching through of them. I need a bit of time for switching among more than 2. About the accents many people critize, apart from contexts as Luxembourg where people are speaking 3 to 4 languages everyday, I've always heard foreign accents in non native speakers of a language in certain way, and I think accent perfection is not as important as intelligibility is, in which maybe speed can play a relevant roll. Finally, very good project! I've become interested in it.

Phil Harris I feel like learning basic chinese isn't so hard. the part that'll be the hardest is most likely the pronunciations for a native english speaker. however learning hundreds of thousands of characters that have no resemblance to english (at all) isn't easy either. there are like 4 or 5 loan words from english like "genes" (基因 or jiyin) and sofa (沙发 or shafa) but that's pretty much it. it's learned through continuous repetition. however, as you continue, and start to think "oh this is easy" watch out for the never ending proverbs and confusing synonyms. learning proverbs ( if you do get up to this good job) gives you an insight into chinese culture and history, since incidents from culture and history are widely used. however there are some languages that are similar to chinese and therefore it will be easier to learn chinese if you know that language: ex: korean. korean pronunciation and characters are extremely similar to chinese, same with japanese. i think the easiest part of chinese is grammar. tenses aren't really require (although they do exist) and most sentence structures are similar to english. whoo that was a lot to type i hope that was helpful!

I had a fit haha. Inspires me to keep at it, I'm from the US and I am also fluent in Spanish. I am learning Italian for about 7 months. I also understand a lot in Portuguese but I learned a lot from exposure since my Stepfather is from Brazil. So I learned a lot from him, but watching Soap Operas and movies in Portuguese with Portuguese subtitles has made it easier to learn the language. I still have a long way to go but I love learning other tongues. What brought me into loving the study of languages was my studies in anthropolgy and early settlement and it certainly is interesting to see how civilizations as a whole could get up and move travel vast distances and then influence the villages where they would end up at with their cultures and languages. Overall I learned that when you open yourself up to the world of language it makes it easier for you to break out of native boundaries and it makes it easier for you to pick up and break down vowels and sounds from other languages. Its all in patience and time. I just started with French I listen to music from a lot of countries around the world so it helped for some to guess what language you were speaking. But my you are truly great.

It's difficult to explain to them that gratifying feeling one gets from connecting with someone in their language. I speak English & Spanish I am learning French, Korean, Russian, Japanese & more. I would love to pick your brain or if you could share some good study habits. Great video thanks! :-)
