I just love Cooper's acting. He makes it look so natural.

G'day! Gary Cooper is the best. This is just a fantastic western with Cooper being drawn into his old life as a killer by is mentor Lee Cobb. Movies like Unforgiven/Clint Eastwood have their roots in tales such as this. A dark, and beautifully shot western, and Gary Cooper is just so good at psychological action. Also be sure and find the old Cooper gem, "the Hanging Tree". Cheers! 😊✌🏼❤️

JPilot2 As I was reading this, I was going to mention my other favorite Coop, “The Hanging Tree” but you already did in your last sentence. I think Anthony Mann is the best director of the Western. But “The Hanging Tree” improves with each viewing. It may be my all-time favorite. Coop is just so damn good.

G'day, Mark! Yeah! Terrific western, and certainly one of Gary Cooper’s best ever. His characterization of the mysterious “Doc” Temple allows him to demonstrate the singular power of his presence on the screen. But relative newcomers Maria Schell, Karl Malden, Ben Piazza, and George C. Scott add broad strokes with their multi-dimensional performances that clearly showcases the cinematic opportunities, created by a very good western story in a unique setting that in itself separates "The Hanging Tree" from any comparison with the norm. And “oh, by the way!”... Marty Robbins rendition of the title song is another, extra base hit for this Delmer Dave’s classic. Thank you! Cheers! 😊✌🏼❤️

Gary Cooper endures. His quiet demeanor keeps him especially relevant in today's society where whoever screams & hollers loudest & behaves the most outlandishly gets the most attention---& is celebrated for it. The less Coop did on onscreen, the less he "acted", the more revealing & compelling his scenes became. The less Coop said, the more he said. His silences conveyed more than a thousand scripted paragraphs. Although the actor's private life was less than wholly commendable, that shouldn't concern us here. Whenever he appeared on those silver screens of yore, in almost any role, the man was magic. And even today, brought into our homes in much smaller fashion, the magic remains. Gary Cooper endures. We need him more than ever.

Big Country was made primarily in the foothills of California near Stockton. I know, I was a little child when Peck, Simmons, Heston, etc were in town. They even appeared at the San Joaquin County Fair Rodeo in Stockton that summer.

His best endings were Win 73, Naked Spur (easily as fine as this one,) and this: as an ensemble all six of his best westerns, including The Furies, which also had a great ending, have to be better than anyones, indlucing Ford. Mann's legend will continue to grow with these, whereas I suspect, Ford's will slightly diminish. Ford was a genius in spurts but Mann while lacking that quality, on the whole somehow made the finer body of work. Strange.
