Man finds lost car after 40 years: Searching for a '48 Ford

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Finding Number 9
Frank Hagerty never gave up on tracking down one of the cars that first captured his imagination when he was a boy -- the 1948 Ford "Dunesmobiles" used to ferry tourists across the picturesque Sleeping Bear Dunes in northern Michigan. As we remember Frank, take a look back at the video documenting the search for his dream car.

I didn't expect this to be near so interesting, from so many points Not *_just_* a man looking for a car, but the history _in many directions,_ people coming together to make this happen with the end results being that *_thing_* that makes a community, a *_"community",_* rather than just a bunch of people living in the same area. And I had no idea that Michigan had sand dunes. *This is a great story.*

God bless him, must've been a wonderful passionate man, we've all lost cars, or some of us who loved vehicles have, and he was fortunate enough to find his dream, many of us recreate them to the best of our ability, recreations are nice, but that certain vehicle always stays in your heart.

Hi Hagerty Classic Cars • An excellent video that gives the history of Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes. As a Michigander I also went there as a kid and remember the Dunesmobiles. Graduated from CMU and went there a lot with my college friends. Thanks for sharing this Historic Part of Michigan as told by Frank. He will be remember by everyone. Cheers from Michigan

As a kid in the 1950s my uncle took us to the western Michigan sand dunes. We got a ride in a buggy called a "dune schooner". Wow! what a ride to remember even after all these years. This was near a town with a funny name of Paw Paw. Who could forget a name like that?

I have a friend who in high school @56 bought a 48, dated, married, and drove it until they traded for a new 62 Impala. 40 yrs later they are driving the same road and see a car for sale that looks like their old one. It has the custom tail lights that he installed in 57! He bought it back and installed a modern engine/trans and still has it. 👍👍

I have had my dream car since 1996. I wanted this vehicle since I was four years of age. I got the newest revision of it in 1996. Today, I still drive my aging beauty with pride and lots of love. Not many get their early childhood dream car because the car is either stopped being produced by the time they can get one, or they have changed so much by the time they can get a car that only the name remains with nothing resembling the vehicle they fell in love with at four years old. I got lucky. Mine barely changed from 1941 to 2006. I may get another vehicle someday. But I will never part with my dream vehicle. I know what I have. She is a treasure to me. The 23 years I have had her have been great together. Many times she is the only thing that makes me happy. I am sure I can get another 35 years out of her. After that, well, it will be checkout time. My old beauty will need someone else to care for her.

Large tyres on smaller rims still have way more traction today than the low profile tyres on a huge rim. A customer asked me to get a humble Ford Ranger 4x4 to stop getting stuck so much. I did nothing but change out his low profile tyres with big rims and put large tyres on a small rim on the Ford Ranger. Not only did the Ranger 4x4 look better, it does not get stuck in his farm and the logging trails anymore. The last I heard he sold the low profile tyres and big rims because he realised they were worthless.

Perspective; these were just old cars then and there were many more to go around! Plus, cars didn't last as long then (lubrication was more primitive and not all cars had oil filters.) Think of a rusted out 20 year old Honda and tell me if you'd want to keep that.

And once again they where just old cars nobody wanted them

Even today, people will trade their aging 1995 Mustang to get something much knew. Someday the 1995 Mustang will be collectible and a desired classic. The ridiculous Chevrolet Spark they traded the old Mustang for will never be considered anything but an economy pile of junk. A coworker actually did this. I was very disappointed with her. She complains the Chevrolet Spark is cramped, slow, and handles poorly. What did she expect? The Mustang was likely auctioned off to someone that will destroy it.
