Man, 70, attacked by gator while wading through floodwaters at his Slidell home

The man's wife saw her husband being attacked and called 911, but the local sheriff's office wasn't able to respond right away due to problems with the 911 system.

About 20 feet away....it's the stuff of nightmares.....it pays to carry firearms. I've had them circle around under my porch after a hurricane as well, boards were missing so you could see them making a pass under the floor.....we did have a baby...three foot.. live in our yard when we stayed in Chauvin....We call them Louisiana yard dogs.... better watch out, they bite.

This isn’t unbelievable. Alligators are everywhere in the south and when flooding occurs, there is always the possibility of something like this happening and people who are in places that flood where alligators live need to be aware of this danger. A warning of this possibility needs to be given out by news agencies on a regular basis so people remember that alligators live in the water…and everywhere water goes alligators will go.

I used to live there. Flood water can contain cotton mouths , floating colonies of fire ants, alligators and even the occasional shark or sting ray after a hurricane. Any flooding at all is likely to have floating ant colonies and the possibility of gators and poisonous, aggressive snakes. Sewage and a multiplicity of chemicals complete the cocktail.

But , On land, we got bears, coyotes, snakes, bobcats & a few mountain lions have been sighted, but idk. Dont forget all the loose pitbulls. Maybe even Bigfoot. Most dangerous is fellow man. Danger is everywhere! just carry weapons on your person at all times, that's a given, in the South.

It's not just gators that you need to be wary of in floodwaters. I live in Florida where we have the same possible dangers present. Venomous snakes won't usually attack unless provoked or threatened; but they'll seek higher ground from the flood and can enter a building much easier than a gator. So I would also be very wary of a Cottonmouth water moccasin or Copperhead in the water or perched on something above the water like furniture, appliances, and steps. It's like watching for rattlesnakes when rock climbing - you are very cautious about where you put your hands and you scan everything in any space you plan to move into. They can also leap on you since they're already feeling threatened by the storm; so you remain aware of that possibility too. Best way to be prepared is to know what critters live within swimming distance and how they behave- BEFORE the storm. Your local wildlife experts are good resources for that. It's good to know as much as possible about them anyway since they live near you, even when not stormy.
