For those who think the berms of snow left behind from the plows is a bad thing, if they don’t clear the roads you couldn’t drive in 5,7 even 10 feet of snow on the road, we’d be completely stranded, most cars and trucks can’t push thru that much snow let along 2-3 feet. Thank you to the road crews

I am 74 and lived in Canada when I was very young. I saw LOTS of snow there. Then we moved to Upstate New York where I still live. And I've seen a lot of blizzards and a lot of snow here. But I have never seen anything like what you're experiencing in Mammoth Lakes. This is just epic. Compared to this our NYS winters are like Miami's. Good luck to you.

It's apocalyptic. Big difference.

As a kid in Jersey my uncle demonstrated how to get the snow off the roof without going up on the roof. 1. 200 feet of yellow nylon rope. 2. A weight to tie on the end. Those the weighted rope over the roof and drags I’d under the snow creating an aided avalanche. It is easer with a friend.

I did that last year …worked like a charm in small sections and only with a foot or two of snow …this is slightly different 😂…my friends and family back in Philly can’t wrap their heads around this much snow

I saw people clearing snow off a roof similar to that at Mammoth this week. They did have one guy on the roof, well back from the edge, and they pulled a rope through the snow, held by other people on the ground making the overhanging snow fall off.

Been a Reno/Tahoe resident since 1962. These are the kind of winters we got regularly through the 60’s and 70’s.

Any chance you could redo your morning trip when it’s summer? I cannot conceive that there are houses and lawns under those massive dunes of snow. And I will never complain of driving my kids to the bus stop in the morning ever again.

Glad to see you clear snow from the top of your rig before driving it. I've seen way too many people just drive off with a ton of snow on the vehicle and it falls off onto either the road or any vehicles behind it. Safe to say you guys will have plenty of water in the mountains for the summer! Great video, thank you, & be safe up there!

I'm actually impressed by how quickly they get the roads open/how much they keep them open. The frequent, large snows have to be insane to keep up with. Really enjoy the videos, thank you.

unlike Southern CA, we get a lot of snow up here every year in Tahoe/Truckee which warrants quick clean-up. So we got the resources. Southern CA rarely see storms of this magnitude and everyone from the residents to Caltrans underestimated that.

I always laugh when people ask why there are so many 4x4 pickups in California

I feel for you. Especially when you get done with the driveway, & you look back proudly at how nice it looks, & by golly george there comes the plow truck & leaves that wall of icy snow at the end of your driveway. As dead tired as you are, you go clear it again. This is my 1st year to say I don't miss it. I don't care if I never see another flake ever again. I'm in Southwestern Virginia. Good to see the blue sky peeking out from behind the gray clouds. Now, it has to melt. Your yard will be soggy. Thank you for sharing what life is like in your neck of the woods. Have a good day.

Always fill your fuel tank up completely when snow is expected. The added weight helps with traction as does lowering the air pressure in your tires.

Adding weight to the vehicle increases the vehicle pressure (weight per area) on the ground. Lowering pressure in the tires increases the footprint which decreases the vehicle psi on the ground. They counteract each other. On packed snow roads you want the vehicle pressure on the ground as high as possible (ie. snow chains). On unpacked snow where you want to float on top you want to decrease your vehicle pressure on the ground.

@@jskow1208 Most are on noseason tires and the rest are on M/S tires which are equally useless, there is nothing better than dedicated high quality winter tires, and good chains when required. Smaller and narrower fitment works best, been running that for 45 years. Cheers

I’m in Columbus Ohio. We just had our first February in recorded history with zero snow and mammoth is setting the opposite records. Very Weird weather.

CA motor vehicle law gives right of way to the vehicle going uphill, not the vehicle going downhill.

The view is just spectacular, once the storm rolls out and the sun reappears to kiss your face, just beautifully captured!!!

Whoa, that’s happened I think back in the late 1989’s when I was living in the foothills of Mt Baldy, Cucamonga. 🙂 Don’t overexert trying to remove snow though. Take it slow and easy if you can. What a blizzard to remember

In 1986 I was in the Coast Guard stationed at Valdez, AZ with my two boys and it was nine feet on the level. That's what the coast guard would say, so how many feet is that on the level? I'm old now, don't even drive or own a vehicle. But I live in the snow country & will always love it over always sunny & hot. Great video, loved getting to go for a drive & I am still in my warm bed with a cup of a hot favorite drink. Love the sound of a good running engine and the sound of the man's calm voice, only saying the necessary so others can learn from his video as well. Wonderful, just me & my dog, in the snow country. Everything beautiful, in a peaceful state of rest. Birds sleeping. I think I'll just keep this video & enjoy it on a very hot day. Snow & a snow cone. Thank you for this! I worked at Mammoth Mountain Inn in 1968 and 1971, '68 being a big snow year. I can so relate. We were snowed in for 10 days, guests followed snow cats down the hill before it got too hard to get them out. Cars crushed under weight of high snow like you show. Mammoth Lakes then was one stop light (I think), a little village which is what we called it, "The Village".

We lived in Mammoth in 68, when we got no snow during the usual months. We were out to dinner with several friends, not knowing we were just about snowed in!! It was January 69. It was eventually declared a Disaster Area. We had a new baby, in the day of cloth diapers. And absolutely had to move to Bishop, where they had more laundry mats!

Wow I'm astonished 😯 I lived through the blizzard of 1978 in Massachusetts. Was not as bad as this for sure !!!! I was 18 ,we the teens lol took toboggans to the store for our neighbors it was fun 😊

Thank you for this nice bit of local colour. I've been following all the posts at Live Storms Media, but they generally focus on major routes. Where I live, in southwestern Ontario, Canada, we got about half that amount over 3 days at Christmas. 😝😬 Then it all melted the first week of January. 😲😂 So much for our snowmageddon. 🙄 I hope all this snow translates into more water for all of you later this year. That snow depth is unbelievable!!!!! Stay safe. The most snow I've experienced was in Spokane Washington,back in 94, snow drifts about 5 to 7 ft. But that was nothing compared to this.

Not so Fun fact: People who don't live in snowy areas aren't really aware of just how heavy snow is and how dangerous it is to allow snow accumulation on the roofs of dwellings. Simple rule of thumb, snow to water ratio is usually 10 to 1(for freshly fallen snow in moderately cold temps). This means 10 inches of snow = 1 inch of water. Not too bad right? 10 feet of snow = 1 foot of water depth. 1 cu. ft of water weighs 62 lbs. so now think about it, each square foot with 1 foot deep of water or 10 feet of snow has a pressure of 62 lbs on it. Think about a roof with 1000 sq. ft covering a typical home, or 62,000 lbs of pressure from 10 feet of snow on top, now think about how they build homes and buildings in the mountains. In these vids you see snow drifts 30 feet thick, now ploughed snow is usually much denser but under each of those drifts the pressure on the ground in around 180 lbs per sq. foot, if you ever got buried in it you ain't getting out without help. This much snow isn't fun and games any longer, it's life and death, especially with avalanches with such high amounts of snow in a short period of time.

Wow! Just Wow! Definitely looks like a winter wonderland from afar... However, I've shoveled plenty of snow in the N.E. and the novelty wears off fairly quickly once you have to deal with it. I don't think I've ever seen (personally) that much / thickness of snow on your roof. Jeeezus... I can only imagine how much that weighs.. I bet if you shot a video of the removal it might go viral... I've seen plenty of videos that have, and I don't recall seeing any of them as thick as your roof...

At 5:47, you mentioned that downhill traffic has the right of way. I'd like to politely mention that you are wrong about that. UPhill traffic has the right of way because the driver facing downhill has better control of the car; thus, it's easier for him/her to reverse and get out of the way. Great video.

Crazy Video, man!! I used to live there, used to drive the bus for MMSA. I'm too old for it now, but insane to see all that snow. Maintenance guy (friend) is snowed in up in Bodie, too!

This amount of snow is how it used to be up in the mountains. This used to be a normal amount of snowfall to get a good pack in the mountains to provide water for the rivers and lakes throughout the summer.

I am glad that we have statistics to prove this statement false. Snowpack levels are over 200% of the 30 year median. So this is double what the normal snowpack was even 30 years ago. Yay math and science.

We lived in Mammoth in 1968 when we got no snow when winter hit. Thanksgiving and no snow. Christmas and no snow. My husband and I were out to dinner in January, 69 and unbeknownst to us, it had been snowing the whole time and now our car was half way buried in the snow!! We lived close so had fun walking home in it. Our friends were not as fortunate though. But it snowed for days, and eventually declared a Disaster Area. We had a new baby in the day of cloth diapers. I don't know if I should bad or jealous. Lol. I'm on the east coast and we have had our worst winter to date with only 17" of natural snow all season. I would give anything to take some that off your hands. We've had a few blizzards over the years and know the work that goes into the cleanup, but nothing like what you are experiencing. I like the perspective from the front-end mounted GoPro. That's how I do my driving videos. It would be neat to see the same drive after the snow is gone to see the difference for those of us who don't live there. I've only been to Mammoth twice. 87 and 89.

@@lorrie5881 For all my vehicles, Goodyear tires makes studded tires for winter conditions. Tires are expensive but living here in Incline Village, Nevada (Lake Tahoe) they work beautifully.

Looks wonderful. I grew up in Maine.Never had to dig out of THAT much snow though.

I am in Incline Village, Nevada and I cannot believe the type of weather we in the snow country are having. The beginning part of this week ALL and I mean ALL ski resorts were closed by the blizzard. Stay safe and warm. I think I will be investing in a excavator after this season.

Love for you to do a remake in the summer and take the same path for perspective. Stay safe.

I was there 50 years ago for the last big one, I lived in the Knolls and I had to dig down 2 stories to find our front porch (thanks Dad) best part though was the school was totally closed for weeks and that was great...amazing its been that long since a tremendous blizzard

If two vehicles meet on a steep, narrow road and neither vehicle can pass, the vehicle facing uphill has the right of way. The vehicle facing downhill should back up until the vehicle driving uphill can pass.

Yep! Always remember; it’s too risky to BACK DOWN a hill, things can go wrong fast. It’s much SAFER to back uphill.

I lived in Mammoth in 2001 for the Winter. Worked at the Call Center for a free pass . It was a good snowfall back then, but nothing Like this~~ Miss that beautiful little town and CHampagne powder~

I live in West Michigan and our plow driver is afraid to put the blade down! Good thing we haven't had much snow this year. And lately, we haven't been getting the snow we used to get when I was younger in the late 60's and 70's. Our piddly 6 inches forecast for tomorrow will be nothing compared to your dump! I feel for the people , but as well the wildlife! Sucks for them too!

Man that roof cornice… scary … hope yall get that safely down without damage to people or property…. Thats a widow maker for sure…

Surprised I don't see more tire chains. I noticed the bus company doesn't fool around. I've used them in the Appalachians and they are a huge help.

1971-72 best friend and I made $10/hour cash removing snow off of a condo complex roof. That was after I made $2.35/hr. at the ski lodge. We were thrilled to say the least.

I live in Charleston, SC where it last snowed five years ago, so I could never, but this is fascinating.

We are used to snow here in New England, the amount you received is ridiculous!!! We have had hardly any snow this year, it seems mother nature was confused and sent it all west! I hope no roofs collapse under all that weight!
