I've always been impressed by how threatening and panic-inducing they made this scene because the original song really isn't. But you feel the terror building in this scene and it feels like the song is really adding to it, but that's completely absent listening to the original. I just think this is one of the strongest points in the movie.

The handheld camera after she talks to sam really helps with the build-up, and the fast cuts between shots during the climax also helps you achieve a sense of chaos that you would never be able to do in a live show. Brilliant!

Totally agree, especially when they showed like the small details like the dolphin almost beating like a heart. I have very bad panic attacks and it seems like things are spinning or pulsating around me. Vision goes blurry sometimes. Although in Sophie’s case, alcohol probably made these feelings worse.

@@Ethan-en2ij What Ivanna means is that a panic attack feels disorientating. Like every sound is overwhelming, and that you feel claustrophobic but it's a kind of claustrophobia you can't escape. It depicts it perfectly in this scene where Sophie is surrounded by all her "dads", stress, and can't escape.

She never talks about her own father, just her mother, so she could feel if she didn’t have a father figure then Donna could be both for Sophie. A very “i didn’t have a dad and I throughly I turned out fine!” Moment :)

If my bachelorette party doesn't have: 1.)Meryl Streep dodging an ex, 2.) A Gimme Gimme Gimme (a man after midnight)/ Voulez-Vous live mash up, 3.) men crawling up the walls, or 4.) a live performance from Donna and the Dynamos ..... I don't want it.

I love the good rep on what anxiety and overstimulation looks like but may I also point out how the lyrics fit as well? When everyone is in the circle around Sophie, the lyrics "its a big decision" and "you know what to do" start. In Sophie's point of view its like people are pressuring her into picking which dad to give her away and its freaking her out.

This is so dramatic and cool I love everything about it the dances the stress the talking EVERYTHING

2024 and still love this movie

2:38 the way she goes from looking to everyone to trying to find a way out 2:39-2:44 she takes a step forward but jumps back realizing there isn't a way out as people start getting closer to her 2:45 as she begins panicking desperately trying to find a way out before collapsing feeling overwhelmed

Harry’s face at the beginning, he’s like where tf are they going?

Whenever someone ask how do I describe my panic attacks I would talk about this scene, how Sofie sees everything spinning, feeling like you can’t breath hearing too much and nothing at all, and even having ur mom/person u care about running into the crowd just to make sure ur safe.. On another note Harry’s “I’m ur Father! I’ll be there!” Moment is my favorite moment in the entire movie

This is what anxiety is, and you could even see that Donna was worried for Sophie in that scene when she was in the middle of the circles. It had portrayed that everyone's eyes were on her making her very anxious which caused her to pass out.

I loved how the scene is a buildup of Sophies' dads steping up for her but even when they had her in front of them clearly having some kind of mental breakdown, is still Donna (and sky, at some point) who can sense somenthing isn't right. bc she knows her best. I JUST LOVE MAMMA MIA.

I remember watching this for the first time, when I was young, and i thought it was a party but when Sophie was panicking and then fainted it lowkey traumatised! It’s still such an amazingly portrayed scene of Sophie’s struggles

As much as we can't figure out which of her dads is her bio dad, I feel like we'd never doubt Donna is her mom - other than, you know, looking really similar... They have the exact same sense of drama. Can never keep things simple, those two!
