Your better than some of the professional groomers putting up videos. Thanks for the advice. I'm also trying to groom my own dog. After taking her to 5 or so different places over a couple of years and watching my dog get so stressed I decided it would be better to try it on my own. I'm getting better with each groom and she is also getting better. She loves the blow dry now.

Liz Slafkes the grooming table really helps to get them to stay still because it has a neck collar attached to it so they can’t really be moving around. You need consistency for them to get used to you grooming them so start by brushing him always in the same place you want to groom him. Make the sessions longer each time until he gets the hang of it. Once you have all your grooming tools and pick the day you want to do his grooming make sure he gets a nice long walk so he can be tired and not move so much during the grooming. I suggested start only by partially grooming him so that the session is not too long. I have a few videos on basic grooming you can check out and in the description box I mention all the products I like to use! Hope that helps and happy grooming!

  • @TatysLifestyle

First you need to desensitize your dog. You can do that by getting him used to you touching his face. Start by petting or massaging his face and rewarding him with treats or praise. Then get him used to the tools by getting it close to his face and rewarding good behavior. You will want to associate grooming with something fun and rewarding, do not force him or it will only make it harder for yourself to cut the hair on his face. Before I groom my dog I take her on a long walk around the neighborhood, get her nice and tired so she cooperates better. She is motivated by treats so I always reward her with small treats to tell her she is doing a good job. Eventually he will learn that grooming is not painful and is rewarding. Dogs learn on repetition, you just got to have patience and keep doing it everyday. Hope that helps :-)

Chloe Boyd I live in Parkland (south Florida) and that’s the average price for a tidy up around here. If you just want a bath it will cost $25. Anything more than you pay more. How much does it cost in your area?

Professional Groomer here. Please don't. In 6 weeks. I'll have to fix this. The brush will leave dead hair and your looking at a bald dog in the end. Or it'll cost you a bunch more at the vets office when you cut that pad or other area. Take a class to learn to do this. Safely! Thanks from your dog.

Sensation Of Peace The brush she is using will not remove dead hair! Skin plus hair plus dirt = Matts which can not be brushed out but have to be shaved off. Use a comb to double check. Further, if the dog jerks the paw or sanitary area can be cut Requiring stitches, causing infection and pain. Every time I watch this I'm afraid she'll cut the dog. I know she doesn't, but how many watching this WILL cut their own dog's skin. Shears pointed at the eyes, squeezing the dogs face... Too much else to actually mention here but this is not the answer to home grooming. Please don't. Watch another video from a real Groomer and you will see the differences. The most important part of being able to groom your own dog is doing nails, ears and tooth brushing, proper washing and brushing! Those are the "healthcare' of grooming. Leave the cutting to professionals please. Or take a class first.

Donita Jackson thanks for your input! But just to clarify, I have been grooming her for the past 6 years with no problems or accidents. The very reason I started grooming her myself was because during Her first year of life I went through several groomers and could not find one that would not hurt her or simply cut her hair to my liking. First it was bleeding nails when they would go in too short in the quick, then Knicks around her groin, then they would shave her nose bridge, which I always hated, not to mention when she came home “butchered” and the groomer just blamed her for “being too hyper and moving around too much”. It got to the point she would not even walk into the groomers because she was traumatized. I have been cutting her hair since and I admit I’m no professional but I did watch Grooming videos from professionals and I do what I feel is best for my dog. It might not seem like in this video but I do take my time so I don’t hurt her and thank goodness I never have. I do use different types of brushes to brush her coat to remove dead hair and also a comb as you see on 3:15 of the video. I don’t mean to take your job, or take away from the Grooming business this is just what is best for her. Every time I walk her or take her to the park I have nothing but compliments on her beautiful and shiny white coat and haircut. I have friends that also have Maltese dogs and they actually take a picture of my dog to show it to their groomers to do the same cut. I do appreciate your time and concern for my dog :-) but rest assured she is in good hands, check out her ig for more pictures! @nala_themaltese

I am just learning how to groom my Malti-poo and am not sure of the blade sizes and how long or short they will leave her. I borrow my neighbors clippers for now, she owns 10 dogs and groom them herself she advised me to a use a #10 for the butt and under the arm and a #7 for the rest of the body. Is this correct? I don't want my baby to look like a rat (usually how she looks once she returns from the groomer. They advised me they use a #10 all over and I don't like that look at all.

The blade 7 will leave you with about 1/8 hair length which is slightly a little bit longer than the blade 10 which leaves the hair 1/16 in length. You can always do blade 10 with a comb attachment to make the hair a little bit longer. You can buy the comb attachments on amazon for less than $20 and each comb guide will tell you the length, so you can pick the one that leaves your malti-poo with longer hair. I use blade 10 with a 1/8 comb attachment and it leaves me with almost 1inch of hair which to me is the perfect length. It is short enough that she doesn't get matted but still long enough to make her look fluffy. Hope that helps!
