Yeah, that's fine. But I will expect the same from the Maldivian President and people of Maldives when it comes to China. Whether you like it or not, it has to do more with religion. Maldives is 99% muslim nation. India is ruled by an anti Muslim Party, it's obvious that Maldivian will not be happy to have troops of a country with a anti Muslim government. If it hasn't been the case, this incumbent President wouldn't have politicised the issue despite knowing that this would lead to anti Indian sentiment in Maldives.

I am for the Maldives to choose what is best for her as India should do what is best for her. If you want 'India Out', send all Indians out. We are willing to reciprocate. After all, you do not need a smelly country with the Indians around. Second, stop all trade activities with India, and India should also stop the same. Third, may you not train any Indians (if any) and let India also do the same. Let us have no contact. I believe in not having diplomatic relations with Maldives to avoid such skirmishes in the future.

@@casualviewer8792 Their businesses are to a percent based outside but their market is India. So for the next 20-30 years the Indian economy will move slow and steady. I don't see a possibility of sudden boom or a sudden fall. It will grow as the country diversifies from agriculture to manufacturing while keeping it's already functioning service sector steady. In every country there will be a few companies that are too big to fail and they are the ones who bring foreign technology and R&D into the country which gradually percolates to other large,medium and small scale businesses. Profitability is not the only motive of such buisnesses. In the case of China's evergrande even though it was in a very bad shape the govt stepped in to save the company as they can't afford the collapse of such a giant. Likewise, profitability though is very important they need not worry much as the Indian economy is behind them. We as taxpayers have to take the burden but we also understand that some burdens also benefit us.

Number of tourists and revenue earned are not the same. indian tourist to Maldives do not spend anywhere near the tourists from Europe, North America and other South East Asian nations. So total earning from indian tourists only constitute 6% of total all tourists. You can get the data from the Maldives Tourism Board. As for developing the Lakshadweep Islands that would be difficult considering the size of each island and the distance from each islands. But good luck trying. Either way its unlikely to effect Maldives much.

He wants all the help from India - debts forgiven, more investments, more tourism, more security from pirates, smugglers etc, while his govt spews insults and abuse towards Indians and asks Indian troops(who provide security and stability) to leave his country. I agree 100% with you. As a Singaporean, I can fully understand the correct attitude that you have because we here in Singapore is also very sensitive about our sovereignty when we are too near geographically to a large neighbour, especially if it proves in the past to be interfering with her smaller neighbours' domestic politics. Maldives should naturally NOT want to be under any foreign military presence in her own land, as there is always a danger that if a more ambitious government that craves dominance in her region. The problem with having foreign military inside one's territory is that, if in future, for whatever potential reason the neighbouring leader may turns hostile, then it is very possible that the foreign military may covertly work from the inside to pose a real security threat! Never say never, it wise to be wary, even if right now they seem like "angels". This President-elect seem to be an honest and good man. May God protect and bless Maldives, and her citizens.

@@HTeo-og1lg Theoretically you are right, practically not so much. Singapore itself has agreed to hose US Military base pact till 2035. It grants US forces access to Lion City’s bases anytime it wants. So while one can claim "sensitivity", one also has to be "sensitive" to geo political realities in the world we live in. This president comes across as a chinese agent and will be treated as one by anyone with half a brain.

If a small move more, Maldives will suffer like Pakistan no trade, including no medicine. Also, if they allow Chinese troops, that will be seen as a threat. There is a huge remittance from tourists from India. Most Maldivians come to Kerala, India for medical treatment. Most of the items are shipped from India ti Maldives as they hardly cultivate anything.

Srilanka also done same but gone into debt trap of china now their port is controlled by china. They will never come directly, they will come indirectly into your land. The interviewer try to drive a wedge between India and Maldives. Indians were in Maldives to protect their interest of the then Maldivian Govt. The new dispensation wants Indian troops out and India will move as per the wishes of Maldivian people's mandate. As India is a democracy, so is Maldives. India is available as and when needed. A Qatari Channel's democracy only rests in Television Studio period. Once you are outside the studio, its only interest groups.

We know that the last country where India stationed troops at will was called Sikkim and now it has become an Indian state

90s and early 2000s Maldives economy and major revenue depended on EU&G7 , then the Great recession occurred, It was China that filled the hole to manage the economy. Then covid came and it was tourists from East europe India US/Gulf that played a huge role to fill gaps, now we Maldives learned that in this world u should have good relationship with all the countries, especially a country like Maldives.

when Maldives economy was brink of collapse because of Chinese loan taken at huge interest rate in 2018-19 India gave Maldives financial assistance package of US$ 1.4 billion. in 2022 India did the same to Sri Lanka when their economy were collapsing because of loans by China at high interest rate.

Why India is important for Maldives is for a different reason. If I choose my neighbor's enemy to pitch a tent in my house, my neighbor can never see that to be a friendly move. It is as simple as that. Let us switch sides here- If India is friendly with a nation that is detrimental to the security interests of Maldives, you would react more or less the same way as Indians do now. The bottom line is if you see a friend in India, you will not undermine that friendship through your actions. It is as simple as that.
