The first time I have herd this piece. Deeply moving, in memory of at least four musicians, sadly missed. A very beautiful performance; thank you so much.

Malcom Arnold really is wonderful. Humor ,brassy sarcasm.sounds like an American ! His film scores are always a delight these semi-serious symphonies are well worth discovering .No.9 is a triumph .

What a brave choice by orchestra and conductor! It's great that Malcolm Arnold's symphonies are being heard (and they need to be heard live!). Bravo!

I have such a strong connection with this piece. I break down at the second movement. And at the end I can't contain myself either. There's something about it that feels so aggressive. Something which is undeniably unsatisfied. Where no matter the joy, it always goes downhill again. You can feel the pain and it's such a powerful moving piece

His was a painful life. His music, especially his 9 symphonies deserve to be played more. Why not an Arnold evening at the proms?

I agree with all who have praised this work. It showcases tremendous beauty and a variety of moods, realized via a variety of textures ranging from lush string-playing to occasionally harsh dissonance in the brass. Well done, Sir Malcolm Arnold!

@@MusicaNovaaz I also do. Somewhat like movie music I thought when I played it for the first time in my orchestra. No wonder. He wrote the music tracks for 132 movies.

I’ve only recently discovered this work and it’s a winner. Of course Arnold was sidelined in his day because he wasn’t avant garde enough, however we can appreciate this remarkable work in more enlightened times

Gosh ! Amazing ! Amazing sound and original ideas. Harp, celesta and a stunning second movement - what's not to like. Well played, well conducted and well recorded to boot.

Wonderful! One of the best symphonist of the 20th century. His music combines the high brow and the mundane to perfection.
Maybe the combination next year (2021) of Malcolm Arnold's centenary and his 5th symphony's 60th anniversary will result in the work finally receiving its first performance at the BBC Proms. If that indeed happens I hope it will sound as good as that performance by MusicaNova and Warren Cohen.

Rather, British film music concertized. Malcolm Arnold was a prolific film composer in addition to his classical works, and this symphony in particular shows that facility with quickly changing moods.
