Great content. The lack of Malazan content on KZread is truly perplexing. Thanks

Path of ascendancy is probably more historically accurate in the Malazan universe than the books of the fallen. The books of the Fallen is supposed to be a historical document and therefore subject to the inaccurasies. The ICE books are written a lot closer to the events so are probably more accurate, in the context of the Malaz universe

Absolutely! You're actually seeing events happen in ICE instead of just hearing about it afterwards in the main series. ICE would be more accurate, but it is a LOT more spoilery so I stuck with what we learn across the main series and everything else should be a fun surprise. There's also something to be said about what we're told in the main series being propaganda and an idealized version of events as well, but I enjoy it regardless

Thanks for making this. I bought the book series in 2019 when I was getting into fantasy fiction but never got around to reading it back then. I only finished Gardens of the Moon last year but now I want to get back in and finish the series.

The Esslemont books are Canon, not novellas. If you think you can avoid them when trying to explain how the Empire was created, you will be sadly mistaken.

Half the point of the books is history is remembered differently all the time. So his take is still technically correct.

As mentioned, there are direct contradictions in PtA. These aren't mistakes, I said I was discussing what we learn of the history within the main ten books themselves, which will also prevent spoiling PtA which people should read. I feel like the differences are fun to learn about, and you can even wonder about which is more true? Why are there differences? Likely what we learn in the main ten could be considered propaganda as the "Official" story, whereas PtA could be considered what actually occurred. Like how the recorded past often is not what actually happened.

Well, yeah. I specifically said that in the video. PtA has several contradictions when compared to what we learn from the Main 10, and I wanted to describe the story as we learn it from the Main 10, since it's still fun to talk about. Is PtA probably more accurate? Sure. Does that mean we shouldn't discuss what we were originally told? I like to think what we are told in the Main 10 is the "official" version, meaning it's likely propaganda from the Malazan Empire.
