Malaysia is like that girl you know but never really pay attention too because there is other girl around her thats more outgoing and fun...you only notice her when you found out how friendly and easy going she is and how comfortable she make you feel when you're around her..then when you hang out with the other girls again you start to miss her present around you and you'll come again and again to meet her because you start to fall in love with her low key beauty.

Why people (westerner mostly) skip Malaysia. They went to Thailand, Philippine or Bali,,,,because Malaysia is more on Family Friendly Vacation destination. Those who want fun (extreme night life not included), those who love food, those who like Family Friendly city (no Red District and wear decent cloth with decent behaviour), and those who like Nature mix in City (option from Concrete Forest to Rain Forest, from Turtle in Terengganu to Orang Utan in Sarawak, from Beaches in Sabah to Water Park in Sunway, from Durian in Pahang to Strawberry in Cameron, from Nasi Lemak in Kg Bharu to Manate Fine Steak),,,

Malaysia is my favourite country by far. The people and the food are what makes it special. My own point of view as to why it doesn’t get as many visitors is because of it being a mostly muslim country. I’m happy that the huge ‘backpacking’ SEA community mostly gives it a miss.

    1. Genting Highlands is our Vegas. Putrajaya is our D.C. KL is our NY. Penang is our silicon valley. Langkawi is our Hawaii. Melaka is our Colonial Williamsburg. 2. The islands off Sabah are our Maldives. Mount Kinabalu is our Matterhorn. Kundasang in Sabah is our NZ. 3. The Brits tried to make Cameron Highlands feel like Surrey. Another brit founded Frazier Hill. They were all trying to escape the heat. We, Malaysians go to the malls instead. 4. When the north-south double tracked electric railway is finally completed, independent travel on the west coast of peninsular Malaysia would be very possible. 5. Unfortunately the East Coast Rail Link will only be completed by end of the decade. But then there is the bus. 6. Air Asia is Malaysian. You can fly within Malaysia cheaply. There is also Firefly and Batik Air. 7. Don't forget Sarawak. Chef Anthony Bourdaine loved the place.

Glad you're enjoying your time here and feel like talking about it more with other people! :) If you want to see more "vegas in malaysia" you should try checking out Genting Highlands, a casino-hotel-shopping-entertainment-theme park 'city' on the mountains, the weather is much cooler there (when it's foggy it's really special) and there are cable cars and a scenic temple too. It's only around 1.5 hr drive/bus ride from KL, but just beware of the timing of the heavy rains we have now (late afternoons/early evenings) and try to plan the taxi/bus trips outside those times. Oh and ~2 hrs from there, you can even get fresh strawberries for Coda (and teas) from the farms in Cameron Highlands next too!

@@FrancesAnneFong lol what’s your point? Malaysia has way more tourists than the Philippines, tourist spending is also much higher than other ASEAN countries so your theory that their just “transit tourists” is just false. Also Sabah recorded more than 4 million international tourists in 2019, which is almost the same amount as many ASEAN countries. The entire Philippines only recorded over 5 million tourists in 2023 with all their places COMBINED. So if you wanna talk about not widely known, it’s everywhere in the Philippines.

MALAYSIA as a whole might be viewed as "not so visited" or "underrated" but the truth is Kuala Lumpur is the 6th most visited city in the world just behind Singapore and well ahead of a lot of European cities, so is not that underrated after all. Not to mention that it is quite hard to experience the actual Malaysian cultures and authentic Malaysian food in KL as the city is occupied by immigrant workers rather than the locals selling cheap knocked off Malaysian food. It's still cultural but mixed up like a 6-flavored ice cream with Malay, Chinese, indians, Arab, Bangla and western influence.

I see a lot of influencers promote sketchy countries and their overly hyped bland food. But i’ll still take my money to Japan, korea, malaysia, singapore or china 😂

U know why people go to (for example) Thailand or Singapore instead of Malaysia. Because of the stigma of a "muslim" country attached to Malaysia imo. Western media paints a negative light on Islam often referencing a select few countries in the middle east even though globally there are way more muslims outside of the arab nations. To me, Malaysia represents the moderate islam. Contrary to common belief about muslim nations, women thrive here in Malaysia. They hold high political positions (we have 5 women ministers including the health minister & the education minister and 8 women deputy ministers), way more women in universities than men (61W: 39M ratio) and also more women in professions like lawyers, medical doctors and dentists than men. And no one is forced to wear a hijab here. If ppl wear it, it is by choice. Surprising isn't it? Another thing people who never been here might not know, english is widely used here since we were a British colony. Oh one more thing, if u come to Malaysia, u will also experience the Indian & Chinese culture because they are big part of Malaysia, So if u come to Malaysia, u don't have to go to China and India no more haha jk. 😅😅

Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand are the best places to visit and live in the entire SEA region. They are not congested by people and traffic, they're cleaner and more organized, and they have a strong culture.
