It’s strange that you mentioned malaria, but failed to warn people of the dangers of Bilharziasis (schistosomiasis) which is prevalent in Lake Malawi. Especially as the lake area is a great tourist attraction. Chichewa is not the only language spoken in this country considering the other indigenous people ie Ngoni, Tumbuka, Nyau etc. Apart from a short spell in Zomba, Lilongwe and Blantyre I spent a good few months in the Northern region, Mzuzu, Rhumpi, Livingstonia and mainly under canvas on the Nyika and Vwaza Marsh area. Didn’t have the luxury of Boma Guest Houses but spent time in surrounding villages in traditional local huts. It’s a beautiful and friendly safe country. Plenty of Mzungo living there.

Thanks for your comments and wisdom. We never got a chance to spend any nights under the canvas but would love to come back and do some more remote travels and adventures. Especially in the more Northern and Southern border areas. Cheers! Thanks for your comments!

My husband tested positive for bilharzia after 25 years later. Caused him a lot of problems. He was treated in a disease clinic here for 6 diseases. Bilharzia in my opinion caused my husband problems. He was always in the water. He got malaria 3 times before he nearly died.

I am a Malawi and I find the advice bizzare. There is no law and cultural rules for gifts. What you bring as a gift is totally up to you. It is not even required that you bring a gift. All you need is an open heart. Come experience Malawi at your own terms while respecting the locals as fellow human beings.

So I am thinking this advice you were given is just a bunch of BS

Most people don't speak English at all. And the languages aren't mixed unless you're in the refugees place. Yes, malawi is the warm heart of Africa. They ware what they can afford. They do ware hats if they can afford it. You can go to a pharmacy and get ant-malaria tablets. Food is amazing special street food. Food market in Malawi is amazing. Buy local sims and its cheaper then the uk and us. Get a local to get it for you as you will be charged more. Not seeing white people is not something new in malawi as it is an african country. Its the same as white national have never seen a black person. There is muzuzu coffee that you can get anywhere in malawi. Don't everyone like to be committed when they spent time cooking to fill your tummy. I gland you liked visiting Malawi but u have only seen 2% of how people live and you have put them all in one basket.

I don't think there's a place in Malawi where people have not seen white people before...that is not true. Don't forget there are White Malawians and the country is too small to have people who are in the middle of nowhere. You got this wrong.
