The Málaga Easter Festival is a prominent religious, social, and cultural gathering held every year in the city of Málaga. Processional marches occur from Palm Sunday to Good Friday, with Holy Saturday serving as the interim period until Easter Sunday. From Lent until Passion Saturday, five Brotherhoods, along with various associations and parish organizations, partake in the processions. It gained recognition as an International Tourist Attraction on February 16, 1980.
In Málaga, the revered icons are transported on elaborate platforms referred to as "thrones," distinguishing them significantly from those found in other Spanish locales. These thrones are renowned for their substantial size and cultural significance. Unlike elsewhere, where "pasos" are conveyed by carriers beneath a wooden beam, in Málaga, the responsibility falls on "men of the throne" who support the weight by resting their shoulders beneath long metal or wooden bars extending from the structure. Additionally, these thrones tend to surpass pasos in size.
Like in other urban centers, Málaga's processions typically feature a pair of thrones (depicting Christ and the Virgin), escorted by penitents (nazarenos) carrying candles or other paraphernalia like rule books or lanterns, alongside "promesas" who have pledged penance for favors, walking behind the band. An exceptional trait in Málaga is the accompaniment provided by military and security units to the venerated Sacred Images, encompassing units such as the Parachute Brigade, the Legion, the Navy, the Regulars, the Marines, the Local Police, or the Civil Guard.
Apart from the penitential march, the brotherhoods and sisterhoods engage in additional endeavors centered on their three core principles: education, devotion, and philanthropy. These encompass a range of charitable initiatives like supporting soup kitchens, contributing food, or caring for the elderly and infirm. Internal religious practices occur year-round, comprising novenas, quinquennials, and triduums, often involving the presentation of sacred images to infants or youngsters, alongside the distribution of medals featuring the organization's emblem.
There is a Consortium of Brotherhoods, established in 1921, wherein members are chosen quadrennially by the leaders of various brotherhoods and sisterhoods. This autonomous body, free from governmental influence, oversees the coordination of Holy Week activities and streamlines negotiations and arrangements with official bodies concerning the designated route.

I am from India and I love to see the arrangement on the eve of Good Friday. Yes, it is truly Good Friday because the Lord shed His blood so that all of us who look at the Cross and glorify Him for what He accomplished are saved and no more counted among the lost. Strong traditions. I was in Madrid and Segovia during Holy Week in 2013. I was amazed. Now on KZread I’m getting feeds from South and Central Americas. The atmosphere is solemn and prayerful.
I was fortunate to experience the processions of Cartagena,Spain two years in a row. Simply awesome especially the ones done on Thursday when the city lights are turned off.

Our ancestors are Muslims then Spain colonized us for nearly 400 yrs. They were our colonizers who took away our true identity as Maharlikans. They used religion in colonizing us because our country the Philippines are so rich in natural resources from spices to gold and minerals etc.

Saw something a little similar to this in Manila. Without the hood men of course but same on the part that Men carry the Huge Images, no use of Carozzas. I was amazed on how can they carry that weight! For me, its more sacrificial and intense.

Se llaman nazarenos. Cubren su rostro para ocultar su identidad y confundirse en igualdad con el resto de sus hermanos cofrades. El cono puntiagudo simboliza la consciencia de ser personas culpables de haber hecho daño a otras. Solo Cristo Crucificado es inocente.

It is called a capuz or capirote, it is a hard cardboard in the shape of a cone that is covered with a tight cloth with two holes at eye level. It is customary for the pilgrim or penitent not to show himself and not to be annealed by the rest.

I don't know if you should call it Easter Festival! In Spain, as in all the Catholic world, Easter is the last day of the Holy Week, which Starts on Palm Sunday and ends with Domingo de Resurreccion or Resurrection Sunday! For Catholics, Holy Friday is the most important day of Holy Week, for whatever reason.. For Protestants Easter Sunday is the most important one!

@@joerabi Thank you for taking the time to react! I hope you had the chance to see the Cristo de la Buena Muerte! I discovered it four years ago and always look for it every Holy Thursday! Malaga has been lucky with the weather. In Sevilla a lot of the pasos and processions had to be cancelled!
