In this video, Dr. Praveen Kammar (Consultant Surgical Oncologist, SSO hospital) will give us information about, can we identify the type of cancer by stool.
It is a very common question people ask often, can we really identify the type of cancer by stool. For that, we need to know what is normal and what is abnormal. These are the signs and symptoms of cancer and here is how one cancer identify them.
Changes in Bowel Habits :
Frequency of Stool: Let's assume your habits have changed. The frequency of your toilet has changed, sometimes it’s 3-4 times a day or once in 2-3 days then it is something that shouldn't be ignored. It is called “Change in bowel habits”.
Consistency of Stool: If the consistency of stool is changing than normal routine stool for 2-3 weeks then it is a concerning situation. These things cannot be ignored especially if you are in your late 40s or early 50s.
Blood In Stools
Most people think blood in stool might be a symptom of “piles” which is a very common misconception. People who are suffering from piles, tend to have a high possibility for “rectum cancer” and one of the symptoms of rectum cancer is blood in the stool.
There are many other reasons a person might be suffering from blood in the stool such as inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis but to know the causes one has to undergo screening. Early screening can help doctors to treat cancer in the best possible way.
Change in the colour of stool
If there is bleeding in the large intestine you’ll observe the black color in the stool which means there are possibilities of stomach cancer or large intestinal cancer.
In some cases, you might observe the white colour in stool this happens when the liver does not produce enough bile or the bile is obstructed due to pancreatic cancer.
With the help of endoscopy, we can detect diseases that are related to stool. Patients suffering from piles and blood in stool are recommended a colonoscopy. If the bowels are white or black in colour, in such cases the doctors suggest endoscopy of the digestive system.
