Just discovered Mr. Maldron about 4 minutes ago. The melodies from what I’m hearing so far are haunting and daunting. I really like it.

This is amazing music. After decades of listening to jazz, I can't believe I'm only now discovering Mr. Waldron.

My favorite of all Jazz piano musicians. I had the honor to meet him when very young and then to discover his music again years later. Why is such a great musician not more celebrated!!!!!
Love this set by my guy..... D'Ron MalWal
It seems typical for this master of sound that the first album produced after his long period of illness is a (haunting) solo effort (his first recorded solo effort, btw). Obviously he enjoyed the stay in Italy. Here is an excerpt from an interview with Ted Panken: “In Rome I did the radio every week for about one year, lots and lots of »giorno de festa« holidays with pay. I loved it! … In Bologna I just did gigs. I did the jazz festival there… The Bologna Jazz Festival was running there at that time, for two years.” - The way he talks about his breakdown is revealing: “ … I was out for about 6 or 7 months, in East Elmhurst Hospital, and they gave me shock treatments and spinal taps and all kinds of things to relieve the pressure on my mind, to get my memory back, because I couldn’t remember where I was, I couldn’t remember anything about the piano or anything. … I lost my coordination. My hands were shaking all the time; I couldn’t keep time. So then I got out of there, and when I got out of there, Marcel Carné asked me about writing music in Paris, and I said, »Of course! Let’s go! Let me get out of this.« Then I got to Europe, and I found in Europe there was so much respect and love for me that I didn’t need any drugs. I didn’t need any drugs at all.” - Mal’s only drugs he would use for the rest of his life were his cigarettes. Finally he had to pay the tribute when he was 77 years old. - It’s a pity vast parts of the human race did not make an acquaintance with his fascinating art … If you're interested please check the complete interviews with Ted Panken on tedpanken.wordpress.com/2011/08/15/two-interviews-with-mal-waldron-on-the-86th-anniversary-of-his-birth/

His first recording after recovering from a breakdown "caused by a drug overdose in 1963 left Waldron unable to play or remember any music" (per Wikipedia).
Mal Waldron could really compose haunting melodies. His 'Warm Canto' and Seagulls of Christiansen' come to mind.
First track is pure Satie. Brilliant album.

@IMPÉRIALE JAPON Thanks a lot for taking a bit of your time for replying to my comment. I guess if you'd like to have a better insight of your grandfather. You could talk to Jean Louis Hennart, owner of the Archiduc(Rue Antoine Dansaert 6 at 1000 Bruxelles ). Your grandfather was Billie Holiday's last pianist, sort of a legend for Jazz afficianados. You could ask your grandma what was the small cigars brand he was always smoking, I always wondered until today...but pleaae don't take up smoking just to look like him

Just beautiful. I don't think I'd heard anything quite like this. Monk and Mingus come to mind when thinking of experimental solo outings around this period, but I'd take this Waldrom offering.

First song I'm deep in the saddest parts of my brain. Second song comes in with that menacing rhythm and dissonance. Fantastic
This is f... fantastic, I´m trippin
He was walking from Kearny St on Bush holding a set of clothes. We talked and was happy I recognized him. He was appearing at the Jazz Work Shop In San Francisco with Max and George Coleman. this was '62 or '63 ? Some of his work here is a bit Tristano-ish.
Found out it while reading David Mitchel's first novel. So cool...
I didn't know my grandfather was so good on jazz

To my knowledge this album was released several times on CD in Japan only, among else on Victor VDJ-1565 and Victor VICJ-60054. Some used copies are offered on www.amazon.com/All-Alone-Mal-Waldron/dp/B0000568JS. (Sometimes it makes sense checking auctions often since this is no item familiar to too many bidders, so there is possibly a chance to get it for cheaper money ...)
