Born and raised in Katlehong, East of Johannesburg, Makwa talking about his new album, lawsuits, Kwesta & 'Rap Life' drama on The Ultimate Kaya959 Top30 with Dj Keyez. Making headlines over the past few months, Makwa lays it all bare on The Ultimate Kaya 959 Top 30 with DJ Keyez.
The popular music producer who's known for churning out hit tracks for AKA, Bucie Nkomo, DJ Fistas, Touchline, JR, and Kwesta to name a few hit back at artists for withholding his payment.
In May, Makwa took to Instagram live to share how Kwesta, DJ Maphorisa, MFR Souls, and Ms Cosmo hadn't paid him a cent.
The father of 2 is tired of being treated like a doormat in an industry he helped build. His story is one that is all too familiar in the South African music industry.
In this video, he addresses his claims on not being paid a cent by the artists for songs he worked on. Kwesta's successful album Dakar II, produced by him, DJ Maphorisa, and others.
Unpaid drama aside, Makwa has a new album out, 16S91 which dropped in September. This is his first project under his record label Mzonkonko Records.

@@orapelengtawana3287 I always tell the truth… Leroy and Zweli lied to him because they screwed him over and then they tried and failed to pin it on me. He says Kwesta was screwed over by me, who told him that if him and Kwesta don’t discuss business or their personal lives? Why would Telkom pay Brenda Fassie’s money to Rap Lyf instead of her estate directly as they did with Spirit Chaser and Kwesta? Zweli and Leroy have been screwing him over and then lying to him. It’s sad. Anyway I’ll clear this mess up once and for all. All I ever did was empower people and put them in the position to take care of themselves!

@@orapelengtawana3287 The Telkom deal was worth 8 million but only 1,2M of that was for the music publishing and it was for both Spirit and VurVai, both of which he should’ve been paid. His. Share of Spirit was less than 20% because of all the sample. Brenda Fassie’s sample wasn’t part of the Telkom deal because we used a reprise version of the song without any samples. I arranged that reprise and got 5% for my arrangement which should’ve been 16,7%, had it not been for Spirit Chaser claiming 66,7%. Wale wasn’t on that reprise either it was a new song and thus only Kwesta, Spirit Chaser, Makwa and myself were part of the split for that. Brenda Fassie’s estate was paid a fee of R250k ex VAT for the original track and thus weren’t entitled to a share of the Telkom sync. As for. VurVai it had no samples and that was a 50/50 split between him and Kwesta so he got his full 300k for that. The other R1,2M was for the master rights which he wasn’t entitled to any share of. That was paid directly to Sony and distributed accordingly. Even Kwesta confirmed that he received all royalties due to him from Urbantainment. Leroy is the guy who screwed him out of Umshubhelo Festival but he doesn’t mention his name because he’s also the owner of the car he drives and he doesn’t want him to stop making car payments to spite him. The bank has already threatened to repossess that car and he failed to get them to issue a change of ownership so he can do something as simple as renew his disc without Leroy having to sign for it. Nota, mina I am happy you are cool with Makwa. This whole drama in the end does expose the brains behind so much success and I tell you my Guy, your name comes up top. Issue here is that they will always paint you otherwise but some of us can see or hear when you talk that you have brains dude.
