I appreciate his honesty...he admits the guilt he feels, he acknowledges he wasn't built for what was happening and that he wasn't ready to handle it. He has a lot to process emotionally. I am glad he made it back home to his wife and child.

During WW2 many Italian or German young men fought on the American side even though their parents emigrated after WW1. Their relatives, Aunts, Uncles, cousins Grandparents still there. Their parents felt America is now their home. I'm sure Maksim feels the same way. America is now his home, even though he loves Ukraine and its people. Tough decision.

I just have such a heavy heart and mixed emotions I pray for peace for the Ukrainian people.

I said it before I’ll say it again there’s no shame in surviving. He did nothing wrong. If you feel like shaming anyone why don’t you shame the Ukraine border guards who have been discriminating against folks of color trying to get to points of safety. Some of them are black Ukrainians, others are visitors and exchange students who need to get access to their embassies in Poland and elsewhere.

@@antmagor I agree with this but as the leader instead of leaving and staying alive to lead - he reject a ride and asked for ammunition instead along with a number of able bodied MPs. As for Chmerkovskiy, I guess in his heart he is no longer a Ukraine - fair. His personal torment about how he feels about himself for not fighting is a him problem that not the best timing to be on social media and tv shows talking about it. Perhaps, since we will not stop it locally he and me and the rest of the world may still be called upon to fight. Considering Americans objected to wearing a mask, I highly doubt many are prepared to fight.

He is an American citizen 🇺🇸 who had a scared and worried wife and child at home. I think he did the right thing by thinking of his family. He's a father too, just like those other parents and children left behind. There was another train coming. Otherwise the people wouldn't stay in the station overnight waiting. He has a right to live just like everyone else. He wanted to live so that he could be there for his son. Nothing wrong with that. I would have made the decision to get out of the war zone of any country, born there or not. He could have left much earlier, but he was brave enough to stay behind and document the tragedy so that he can inform the world. He did more than most. We should never judge people's decisions in times of fear and panic. If you're ever in a similar situation you'll understand.

Worried about his children in what way??? His kids are safe. If war broke out here he would be running to ukraine. My husband did 20 years protecting children and had to say bye to ours many times and we were in other countries and states at times. He even sat on tv and described the conditions he left those children to sleep in! Then he says a joke about his grey hair. I will belive he is gonna help when he buys his ticket.we have men all over the world volunteering and going and they have no skin in the game he has family, friends. I bet when he was there he shared their food and homes.With my husband specialized field when he was in military he would love to go unfortunately he has hit 62 and had knee replacement or he would be on a plane. I know my husband would protect our family.

Second of all what he did wasn’t cowardice, what It is cowardice however to wave your finger at him in judgment, Saying that He shouldn’t be able to look Himself in the mirror from the comfort of a computer screen, with no bombs going off in the background. Now Obviously I don’t know Max personally but he has PTSD from when he came to the United States as a kid (He’s been publicly open about that in the past) this invasion triggered it. And I consider it morally reprehensible that people are condemning him for taking care of himself, getting back home (he’s an American, has been since he was a kid) to his wife and son. There should be zero Shame in surviving and a Frontline medical worker would know that! A Frontline medical worker would know that because quite a few of your colleagues had to quit their jobs because of the unprecedented stress, in some instances was causing thoughts of suicide. I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t appreciate a soldier scolding them, saying “I don’t know how they can look themselves in the mirror“. FYI, my cousin is a Frontline medical worker, ICU COVID nurse. You don’t see her trolling other peoples trauma calling them cowards. So again shame on you.

I wouldn't be able to stay in Ukraine if I was him. We can all say he should have stayed but who are we to demand anything. I admire the bravery of those who go back, leaving comfy jobs, security, their families and kids. There are a lot of man that go back to fight for Ukraine. GLORY TO THEM. But leave Max alone. Really, who are we to judge him. All we can do is to support Ukraine as much as we can, support the refugees. But don't attack a man that didn't start this war. He will live with this trauma forever. Maks had been documenting and publicly sharing it on social media so that people can see the atrocities of war in real time. He wanted the truth to be shown because Putin is blocking Russian citizens from all other media outlets around the world and telling the lies that he wants them to believe. So the journalists were already waiting to see if he would make it out alive. They reached out to him, not the other way around. People need to stop being so accusatory and judgmental. Maks is not seeking any type of extra attention. But his story is one that needs to be told.

Can't blame him, the Klitschko brothers are just built different.

turning your back on babies whose fathers are fighting a war speaks of your character as a person. How would you feel if that child left behind was yours?

I don’t see anyone praising him for it, nor is he trying to get praise. I empathize with anyone being faced with the choice between safety and war, or to put it more bluntly, the choice between life and death (especially for an untrained civilian who has zero combat skills). I do not judge anyone for making the choice of survival in the midst of a war. Those who stay behind and fight are undoubtedly heroes that are far braver than I will ever be, but I also do not think less of anyone who decides not to. All I’ve seen are people empathizing with the position he was in, but that doesn’t mean they are praising him or saying he’s on the same level of respect as those who chose to stay behind. I personally don’t find what he did to be shameful or that it makes him a bad person, it only makes him and those like him human; but saying that does not detract from the heroism and bravery shown by those who stayed to fight.

EMDR treatment for PTSD. It will help! My son developed PTSD after being held up at gun point. He was in a hyper vigilant state which caused a mental health breakdown. I hope you get therapy asap and continue to use your platform to help your mother country. 🙏❤️

All the people wishing him bad...shows more about their character than his...He had every right as an American to leave the country..so many coach potato heros following him around just destroying someone who chose to live! What ugliness this world possesses!

He looks strong and healthy so how come he is speaking out but not fighting to save Ukraine. He could not even follow Ukraine curfew rules.

Great interview TJ. I'm so relieved to see Maks safe back home. I'm originally from Haiti and I was a kid during the Duvalier era and I understand every emotion he was sharing on social media. Love for one's country as a foreigner runs deep and the hardest part is leaving it and others behind because we have to. What he was talking about is survivor's guilt.

Too many judgy commenters! Maks lived in the Ukraine from 0 to 14 and the USA from 14 to 42. That's 28 years as an American citizen. His parents specifically moved to get their family away from war. The brave Ukrainians are fighting to defend their friends and family but his friends and family are in the USA (obviously he still has some friends and family over there). He has the right to go home as any other nonresident. He's also right that his documentation of events as a semi-celebrity will probably be more helpful in getting awareness out to people who are being duped and lied to. Maks, only you know what is best for your family and as long as you do that, I won't blame you. Blessings to all affected by this damn invasion.

People calling him a coward or whiny, maybe true or not… who knows, but one thing is true. He was scared. That is no longer his home, he was there for work and did not intend on staying there forever by that I mean possibly being killed. Yes there is a high privilege here with his status in that country and being a celebrity but this shows that he was just as afraid and was one of the lucky ones to get out. He should be and I’m sure he is grateful to be back home in the US where he lives. People need to understand laws about men 18-60 not being able to leave and all of that…. What if they had the same Choice as him? The same privilege… the same US passport… do you think they’d stay??? We’d like to think they would, we hope they would but tell that to a wide eyed man who has everything to live for and is not ready to die. There is no shame in fear. There is no shame in admitting when you know you don’t have “the stuff to cut it” that’s ok. That’s where people who have those things step in to protect you and don’t shame you for being human. We all need to understand one another. If this war teaches us anything it’s that ignorance and selfishness will not get us anywhere. Get to know your neighbor, understand them, be kind to strangers….. open your mind. Don’t judge people who know their limits and need your help.

There are Americans as privileged as him going towards Ukraine, he's a coward who took the spot of a woman or child on the train, he probably pushed people out of his way. Also, I bet if war had started in America instead, he would have stayed in Ukraine and left his wife and child to fend for themselves. He's a narcissist.

@@nerium9306 Narcissist don't feel real guilt, he's just saying that now to save face. Where was his guilt when he was pushing aside women and children to get on a train knowing that they would have to stay at the train station in the cold hoping for another train. He's a stone cold coward.

@@gorgeouslyjen A lot of people there stayed and truly didn't think it was going to happen. I've watched interview after interview and that was the consensus. People stayed thinking it wouldn't come to the point it is now. It was like they were in this bubble. Lots of people were warned. They just didn't believe all the hype and then had to eat crow.

He was not a coward, he was trying to get back to his family. He showed what was really going on in his home country and the reality of war.

Every man on Ukraine fight for Ukraine except Maksim Chmerkovskiy was very stressed out to ride on train on his way to escape to Poland. I hope the whole world will calm him down. Keep watching his beautiful dance.

so if you feel guilty.... fix it and return to help your people. if not, accept that you took adv of us passport and left. you might just be a hero on the dance floor.

Anyone who has lost a loved one feels guilt-I could have I should have-plays over and over in your mind. He felt powerless over there because he was in fact powerless over there. Mila Kunis was born in Ukraine. You don’t see her leaving her husband and children in the US and going over there and learning how to use an AK-47. But sure she has guilt and great sadness too that she is powerless to change the situation. Guilt can last a lifetime for those with deep connections to the suffering and loss. The brothers, sisters, spouses or children of those who died in Vietnam- ask them if they’re over it or if they feel any guilt or regret.

@@sudarov Ashton and Mila are at least 100 times more wealthy than he is , but exactly what he donated I don’t know. He says he’s going to Poland to work with the relief effort in the upcoming days.

He used his resources and connections to get a spot on a train meant for women and children, complained to his IG followers about how crowded the train was, called TMZ to photograph his "emotional reunion" with Peta at LAX, then went on TV first chance he got to talk about his feelings of "guilt." I'm glad he's safe, but please let's not celebrate him as a hero.

Yeah.. the interviews and cameras are a bit sickening.. next thing you know he's going to write a book. I mean, I get it, but if you're going to go home like that, maybe stay a bit out of the spotlight and not glorify your horrible experience running away? *Shrug* Anyway, Glad he's safe

@@portmoregirl I don't think he did anything heroic. I'm just seeing other comments calling him a hero and that doesn't sit well with me. He did what was best for him. That doesn't deserve the media attention he's trying to get, IMO.

Now that's too real. I hope that he gets help because he will be traumatized for a long time. Good when a celebrity can bring focus to a serious reality.

Glad Max made it safely home.

Just think of the woman or child that could have used that space to get out to save himself.

What was his purpose there? To bring awareness to something that is on EVERY news outlet in the world? To show us that he is an American citizen and gets to leave the country and not have to fight? Such a waste of space.

Exactly my thoughts, it’s to do interviews and I bet you eventually a book. It just doesn’t look right, I’m glad he made it out safe but they warned Americans to get out before and he didn’t listen.

I have a HARD time respecting him now, seeing him use his fame to get on a train meant for CHILDREN and their mothers, to escape his HOME COUNTRY to get away... While no other men were allowed to leave, he Only Was because a guard recognized his face and allowed him to sneak on the train. Sorry, but that is not manly at all. And you are having a "hard time" Maks? What about all the men who didn't have the option to run? What about those who had NO HOME to run to? Hard to feel bad for you.

His home is in America, he wife and child are there, that's where his responsibility lies.

No problem taking Ukrainian money to perform but run the moment you must man up, u run.

Max you will feel suriviors guilt for some time. That's part of the trauma. However Please Never Feel Ashamed. That should never enter your mind. Lots of Love🙏❤

The US is Maks's country! He has lived here longer than he lived there. He left there as a young teen. His BROTHER actually lives here and is an American citizen like him. His family lives here and has for years. It is shameful that people are judging him -- you have no idea what you would do in that situation, but I know I would do what Maks did. He has multiple times said he felt guilty, but he really shouldn't. His wife and child, his life is here.

God bless Max and I hope he gets help for his survivors remorse. He went back to care for his own family in America. He followed his heart and knew if he stayed he prob would not make it, as he said himself he is not built for war. It was wise and a huge blessing for him to leave Ukraine. God bless Ukraine.

Read mostly bad comments saying Maks was coward to take up space on train . But he did the right thing . He is American citizen and should be with his own family. Glad he made it. Look at Kiev today.

He did what was right for him. And before people judge him for him they should look up the couple who escaped Ukraine with their newborn with no mention of what happened to their surrogate who carried their baby for 9 months and I’m not even judging them because again they did what they had to do.

He's home. IMO, nothing else should be asked of him!! He's in the position to fabricate what really went on while he was waiting to get out. Who took the picture of him cowering on the train?? And why?? Is this meant to be proof?? Like taking a seat on the lifeboat after the Titanic was sinking and making it to land. Then saying he feels guilty for taking a seat meant for a woman or child. I'm not saying that you should have stayed to fight but at least you could have given your "seat" to a woman or child. You stated that the authorities knew that you were American, so you would have definitely had gotten out. Maybe on a later train.
