I bought my first Makita tool in the mid-90s when they were still fairly new to UK. I’ve never changed brands since because nothing I ever bought from them proved to be a mistake. Along the way I bought and ditched various other brand tools always ending up with a Makita replacement. Of course now it’s mostly battery powered tools and once you’ve bought a battery system it’s really expensive to swap brands. They aren’t always the best in any reviews but they consistently get the job done and this little router is no different. Mine has just kept on going with never a grumble and I’d recommend it 100% to anyone looking for a simple reliable trim router.

Great set - I have it, also the extra precision edge guide that he has on the table and would agree with everything he says in the video. Ideal jack of all trades small router. There is also a clone by Katsu which is functionally identical to the router motor here and works with all the accessories - sometimes useful to have a second tool so you don't have to change bit so often. I got my own 8mm steel rods for the edge guide and they work fine. I also fit a wooden block on the other end of the rods to support the whole assembly when working on the edge of a board. I screwed the simple base (not the plunge one) into a board for a primitive table solution while I am still waiting to build my proper table... If I didn't have it I would buy it again.

It's a great little router. I bought one second hand about two years ago and I love it and use it all the time. I got a cheap Triton with a Rockler plate to mount as table router on my Bosch GTS-10 table saw (I think I remember you have one too) but everything above the table is for the Makita. Also the very long power cable is a ++ point! Thanks for the video.

I agree completely with the criticisms you make. I have both a Makita and the "knock off" Katsu and they are used in trade joinery work and have become a very useful part of my tool kit. The other issue (for me) is the lack of a fine depth adjuster mechanism for use on the plunge base, but I am working on that A couple of additional points: the fixed trimmer base takes Porter-Cable threaded guide bushes directly, the plunge base takes the larger guide bushes off the Makita RP1801/RP2301 routers but Makita do sell an adaptor which allows use with the P-C type guide bushes. Trend sell P-C guide bushes in 16 and 30mm use for use with their templates. Axminster Power Tools in the UK also sell a set of metric P-C compatible guide bushes. The plunge base can also be used with the side fences from the deWalt DW613/615/621/622, Trend T5, Elu MOF96/OF97/OF1, etc as they are compatible with the Makita RP1110 style fence you show. There is now an 18 volt cordless version of the motor available

Andreas Kalt + I have two of this router and I is very pleased with them. One is mounted in router table with Matthias Wendels Tilting Router table. Its works very fine. You forget you can mount the fence to the trim router part as well. I have screwed on a piece of wood on the fence so I have longer fence and its work fine. I have also used the guide bush a lot. I have also a Bosch GMF 1600 CE Professional Twin Base Router and a Bosch POF 800 ACE but Makita is more handy

I have the exact same one and i also use mine all the time, also what you said about the dust collection, mine is different as it covers the opening and the collection is good with it. The other thing i want to say is that mine didn't come with 2 spanners only the 1, but the red button and locking the spindle has been good with mine with no probs. The only difference with yours to mine is that i bought the set separately, as the months and build went by and maybe that was why the dust collection is better, i dunno anyway i still love mine, great video. Great review. I'm into buying this nifty thing in the basic edition with only the trim router as I have a plunge router already with more motor power. I had other ones in my mind but looked at the Makita and decide it would be on the top 5 list. Mainly because the housing is full aluminum and the product seems solid.

I have one of these routers. I haven’t used it yet, I’m waiting on getting the plunge router base. I’m using it for Lutherie (guitars) and I may buy several more of the basic routers so that I can leave the base and tool set up permanently for the task. I want one for edge trimming, one for use in the binding and purfling jig, one for plunge routing the saddle, and one for routing the headstock. I have a larger porter cable router and I may dedicate it to a router table to rout the slots in the neck for the truss rods. Thanks for sharing this very comprehensive review. Take care and stay well.

I'm a late subscriber and started browsing trough your selection. good stuff Andreas. I notice you use the flat side of your router to follow against the fence. If you use the round side, the router bit will always stay the same distance away from the fence even if you wiggel a little. That is if you stay against the fence obviously :D (the center of a circle or wheel wont change in relation tho the surface if you roll it around) When you wiggle on the flat side, the router will go away from the fence. This is a tip I found on youtube and has helped me a lot!
