Makita Belt Sander Model # 9401 Repair

A step-by-step video replacing the rear sanding belt roller and the two associated bearings. My video incorporates two novel methods, one for move removing the belt drive and another for replacing the sealed ball bearings in the rear drive cover.

Hi Richard, many many thanks for your detailed and very helpful video. No shortcuts and a great step by step process for replacing the drive pulley. Watched twice then did my replacement which went as planned with no hidden 'gotchas'. Your video gave me the confidence to tackle this project and for this, thank you again. Cheers ..... Robert

Absolutely perfect! Can't thank you enough for making this. I know I have the skills and tools to do this, but man, this saved me a TON of anxiety! Thanks again for the help! Well, it’s taken a few months to find the time to get this done, but today was the day. My thanks once again for taking the time to put this together. I set things up in order and followed along step by step and it went as smooth as I could have hoped. Sander is running again like brand new. About 75 bucks in parts, 30-40 mins of time and a savings of what I’m sure would be no less than a hundred bucks from the shop. Thanks again!!

Clearly a great tool judging by your dedication & enthusiasm. I am sold on a used Japanese model thanks to your technical support. IF ONLY THE MANUFACTURERS WOULD PRODUCE SUCH VIDEOS that would help to sell them too. Its a no brainer to do a video like this.Maybe legal reasons that they don't produce such legendary videos. I just bought a SP6000 akita plunge saw, truly amazing quality saw and at only £235+VAT & Made in the UK. Well done keep sharing great videos and thank you.

Good work, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a similar but older one, it's a 9400-B.. it's older than me but it works nice and I want to restore it and give it back the old glory.

Fine project and got it all together, but the large belt pulley which is attached to the new driving roller, was rotating off and pressing against the belt cover and causing it to stop rotating. The fix was to tighten the large pulley belt, with pins as shown in video @ 11:30, with the belt sander flat on wood surface, with a sanding belt on, and then twisting the pins clockwise, while pressing on the rear of the belt sander. Didn't need much tightening and that did the trick. Thanks for a great video.

Excellent presentation. Nicely done and in a clear step-by-process. Wish I’d seen this before I recently changed that drive roller on mine. Didn’t change the needle bearings...didn’t realize that was recommended too. Hope I don’t find I have another problem soon.😕

An excellent video. Thank you for making it. My only issue is the removal of #67 V-pulley by using a wrench with teeth on #43 Tension Roller. I am going to make a tool for this job and once done will post the outcome.

Chris Powell, that’s a C S I , common sense item . Remove the armature and remove the bearings with a bearing with a bearing remover . To replace the bearings use a deep socket wrench which fits over the armature shaft but engages the small inner part of the bearing . These bearings are generally sealed for life . Best of success.

As Richard has said it is a C.S.I., but here are the steps for removing armitage: - Remove #6 Dust Collector Cover - Remove #5 Separator - Remove #72 Belt Cover (including #30 Sleeve 6) - Remove #68 Drive Belt - Remove metal plate between #22 & #23 - Remove #3 by holding onto #23 - note that thread is reverse thread - Remove #20 / #21 Brush holder cap & Carbon brush on both sides. - Pry #1 Carefully pry dust collector bracket loose and pull armitage out. - Knock #9 Ball bearing with socket out of Dust collector bracket. - Use bearing puller and remove bearings #9 & #14. Press new bearings onto armitage. - Reverse previous steps

Hello Richard, just wondering if you have any idea what the size of the ball Bearing (#63 in the diagram) that supports the helical gear shaft is. It seems that all the part suppliers don't show it anymore. Thanks... nice to see your video!

@@richardbabbitt6142 Thank you Richard! As it turns out even though the part suppliers don't show the bearing (#63) I found searching the Makita part # shows that they DO have it in stock. I do appreciate your help, your video and quick response! Soon my old but beautiful machine will be back.

Absolutely brilliant. I have one question and that is when the sanding belt is fitted I'm not sure about the direction, I read that the arrows on the belt must align with the arrow on the belt sander. Any comment ?

Robert Kydd l. Regarding the arrow on your sanding belt it must be installed to run in the direction of the arrow. Omni directional belts are available , try Amazon , or any wood working supply store.
