Making Zendaya's Robot Armor in a WEEK (not my smartest decision but hey)

Ойын-сауық

WELLLLL, Zendaya has once again bewitched me body and soul with her red carpet appearances. At the Dune 2 premiere, she sported this Mugler creation and it instantly wiggled itself right into every crevice of my brain and would not leave until I attempted to recreate it.
I scheduled a photoshoot with Olivia Rose Photo, and I was off: with a week to finish the entire suit.
Sometimes you just need a purely "I Wonder if I Can Pull This Off" kinda project, and that's definitely what this was for me.
ANYWHO I hope you enjoy this wild journey, hahaha.
LOVE Y'ALL
Keep an eye out for the photos by Olivia!

    according to Adam Savage, the trick to shiny chrome spray paint is a base layer of GLOSS BLACK spray paint first. The shinier the gloss black, the shiner the chrome on top will be.

    my design models teacher would pester me to the moon and back if I didn't add that metallic colours are notoriously finicky. you need to make sure the surface beneath it is *insanely* smooth and free of both dust and fingerprints to achieve a realistic metal finish. we do that on our presentation models by sanding it to oblivion, scraping on a super thing layer of plastic padding, wet sanding that layer to baby's-butt smooth perfection, then spraying on a solid layer or three of spray putty(?) and wet sanding that to death. and then we pray to all designer gods whilst spraying it with three layers of a *high quality* base coat, followed by just enough of the metallic paint that the surface beads start to melt together but not quite (they need to melt together slowly as the paint settles and dries, or else you end up with drips and that's a tragedy after so much work). if we pray hard enough and work hard enough we'll get lucky and trick our head professor into thinking it's truly metal. otherwise it'll still look really good after this process, *if* the base coat was good enough. we often seem to stumble on that base coat as the ones sold in the nearby stores are not quite good enough for metals.

    @@matildas3177, sure but IIRC the Adam Savage comment was implying you'd notice any of surface scuffs/unevenness problems on the gloss surface BEFORE adding the chrome, so all things being equal a high gloss black base coat will be better than OTHER base coats (provided the paints are compatible because different brands' solvents can interact and absolutely RUIN itself by crinkling and crackling)

    If you know Adam Savage then you know the gloss black is the second-to-last step in a complex process involving hours of smoothing, filling, sanding, cleaning, more sanding, filling again, and more cleaning and then sanding, and then...

  • @graefx

    @graefx

    With scale modeling, gloss black is usually the move too. Metallic paints are made by having a super fine reflective powder like mica or aluminum suspended in a tinted medium for whatever color you want, yellow for gold etc. By its nature it's a transparent paint, so the gloss under coat causes more reflecting and a brighter shine. But yes, if you were pouring days or weeks into this, you'd probably use something like bondo and filler wet sanding to get it as smooth as possible. Adam likes Moltow Chrome in the airbrush. Gives a brilliant shine.

    Certainly not. In fact, its almost guaranteed that the cheap materials that Rachel bought are likely impacted by slavery in some way. We're all complicit. The only exception to this may be the embroidery used by the couture houses. Its French. To be fair it's not a "Zendaya piece", Its the original archive couture piece from the 90s, there is only one of these and its been worn countless times by major celebrities and every time it's been adjusted and fitted different to suit the new models body which speaks to the quality of the materials, really impressive piece of costuming,. The fact her stylist got THE Mugler suit for her to try on is a feat in itself.

    yeah, anyone who's into sewing must have heard of Mugler, right? Although, ironically, it is a name of Germanic origin (from Alsace - that region that cannot decide which country it belongs to) and the English pronunciation Moog-ler is quite close to the proper German way of saying it, whereas the French use the u from _tu_ and pronounce the -er ending as in l'enfer.
