This is great. I love using all sorts of "alternative" things for my art, especially if they are usually thrown away! I often buy things from non-art/craft shops. My hubby and I have a standing joke. I ask, "I wonder if I could make art out of that..." and he answers with a resounding "NO!" which I take as a challenge to prove him wrong! I am fortunate to have an electronic cutting machine. I have designed a lot of stencils on Inkscape and cut them from Tyvek envelopes. It cuts like butter, but you can't use punches with it - it jams the punch and won't cut. Pretty thin stuff but very durable and washable, but opaque. The only thing they won't stand is heat - you get fabulous results when you heat tyvek but it doesn't tend to make good stencils afterwards lol!

Yes . Mortgaging the house. Every time I went to Hobby Lobby at first time I spent around $150. That can never happen again! Then next time it was about $100. then $50. It is getting better. I've learned that steam punk is my art because it's just junk I have people give me their broken jewelry. Today I found a thrift store called only a $1. I asked her to save stuff like this for me. She said her boss was throwing them away. so have another source. Now I digress. I have to put Q-Tips on my list. I can get cheap. These days you have to be frugal. OH yeah the reason I was commenting is after you fold, cut why can't you iron them and put in plastic sleeve to keep in good shape. You have to already have the plastic sleeves. hehehe.

I find printer paper is flimsy and the paint bleeds under it, same way with cardboard magazine covers if the design pieces are close together. I tried using a stencil cutting melting tool on plastic dividers and the edges were jagged. AND the exacto knives handles don't hold the blade in place when I use pressure. Is there a better brand of exacto knife that you would recommend? When using the melting tool do you find you need to go over it again with a knife to cut off all the jagged pieces?

I like the cake stencils ..I was looking for stencils in the cake section just yesterday ..I decided I should just make my own ..so I'm going to work with drawing them paper then transferring to chip board To make a more sturdy stencil version off to look for the graphite paper ..remember we used to use carbon paper andit was so messy lolol...

You have to already have the plastic sleeves. hehehe.

Great idea for using dividers for stencils. I also use non sticky clear book cover film. Not sure if you can still get it... it comes on a roll. I used to buy it in WH Smiths in the UK.

Why not draw it straight on the plastic sheet instead of the paper, then trying to cut out squares or circles ?

I like to plan the layout first on paper, so any mistakes will be dealt with on this stage and not after on the plastic
