Beavercraft is really a great company. Had contact with them and they have a great customer service. Additionally they are not a Chinese company exploiting their workers, but a European company in a region with a lot of history in knife making.
Live oak is basically like a little kid: it's tough to work with, but the feeling you get when you see the results is incredible

Wow! That is a great analogy!
I have several Beaver Craft knives and gouges, I like them a lot. I know they're not the best but I've done stuff with them that I like and people want to buy. If they work for you, that's all that matters.
Love that handle! BLO + white oak = beautiful magic!
I like your approach, any wood, any tool. Its the most realistic approach, and when on a budget the only one. Of course as we learn that changes, and to each his entire. But that should be the start for anyone really.
That live oak looks absolutely gorgeous
I like the octagonal design. I think it gives the best control. The live oak is beautiful.
I love watching your videos! Most of the time when I need guidance on a wood project I come here and search for a similar video. Sometimes the tips I'm looking for a project come after my interest has past but I still watch the video and when I need it I go over the parts where I thought was useful.
Little tip that I use making handles, I use playdough and grip it everyway I would use the knife to make a mock up/template to transfer to the wood, it gives a personalized ergonomic handle

I like doing that for handles that I always grip in the same direction. There was a carving knife you're always switching the grip from a pencil hold to handle grip to a close slide to a finger press and a lot of others.
Really great vid! Last year i bought myself a spoon knife from Beavercraft but right away I didn't;t like their thin/narrow handle in my big handle. Just didn't fit right so i decided to make a new handle from my old garden shovel handle (hickory). basically I cut off 6" of the handle, shaped it, drill a hole at one end...and instead of working with a blank spoon knife, i simply used my carving knife to carve the handle on my spoon knife into a round peg about 1/2" in diameter, and that's the size of the hole i made in my new handle. Then I simply joined the two with some epoxy. fits like a glove now.
Beaver Craft makes some great sharp carving knives!
I love white oak. I turned and carved a complete chess set a while back. Carving is fun, with sharp edged tools. Looking forward to do more carving on future projects.
Nice handle. My grandson made a few handles for my rasp and file set. He would love that handle.
Love the way the grain pops
Yes, Please! Live oak is a beautiful wood when paired with BLO and Paste Wax!
That oak is gorgeous
Great little knife, and you're right that live oak is spectacular!
Well done on the handle. What a great transformation undertaken by the live oak once the BLO was applied!
That handel looks super cool.
Great little project. Love that live oak. Now you need to make a wooden cover for the blade. :)
Those knife blanks look nice. But that handle turned out awesome!
That live oak is beautiful
Really easy and really simple suit me for projects. And being an Australian, a nice piece of Red Gum would make a great handle material

Euc? How do you deal with that cracking?

@@dylanneely91 I've found work with thin narrow boards (50-75mm x 10-20mm cut from as close to the centre as possible work reasonably well or the same cut from timber milled a long time ago. Old sleeepers are great for this, once you get rid of the outside material with an old chain on the chainsaw (don't use a new chain, up to 15mm deeper than any visible cracks will have bits of stone and metal imbedded into the wood). The older the timber the better. The best Redgum I've ever seen milled up came from the old Redheads Match factory in Richmond Vic. Probably 150 years old and very dry. I think that got cut into 50 x 100 and no cracks after about 2 years. The scrap also burnt really well after being exposed to the matchhead chemicals for so long.

@@warrenmunn3224 thats really something! Ill have to try that. Do you treat the ends (or the whole thing)? Thank you for the info. I'm an arborist in the USA and every piece of euc I've tried to save has ended up looking like 150 year old farm siding inside of a year. "Coolibah" (I think is how its spelled), blue ghost, "red ironbark" (again, I think, not one I've seen a lot of), yellow gum, all of them just rip themselves apart in my experience.

@@dylanneely91 Try milling thick slabs and then hope to get small thin boards out of it once it's dried. You rarely see Gum as timber here, its mainly Red Gum in old buildings as girders and beams or a railway sleepers. People now make slab tables out of Red Gum but is generally cut from deadfall not trees cut for timber (I've seen 2+ metre deadfall in paddocks, bloody big old dense River Reds). Only use I've ever seen for 'green' timber is as fence posts but you have to get the sapwood off as soon as it falls, once that starts to rot.....
The live oak is so beautiful
Keep doing what you're doing, this is one of my favorite channels.
Great job. I like the octagonal handle idea. Keeps from rolling off the bench.
Carving knives... Another skill to learn 👌
The blank just came alive just wright 😂
You handled that knife pretty well !!!
It's so satisfying seeing a finish project come together, and it's even more satisfying when you use a tool that you made yourself, even you just made the handle. That little personal touch makes all the difference in the world.
Great looking handle love the choice of live oak and thanks for the opportunity in the giveaway
That live oak made a really sharp knife! :)
Nice project, I love making custom handles that feels right in my hands.
Love the look of the live oak
I do like the octagonal handle shape, and the finish on that live oak looks incredible!
Live oak looks great James and a nice a simple project for numptys like me :D
Great use for a live oak cut off
This is encouraging. I’m quite tempted to try this.
Good day to you! I'm just getting into hand tool work, and one of my upcoming projects is making a new handle for a broken bread knife. So this tutorial is perfectly timed :) Love the channel! Peace
I love the look of live oak. I made a mallet head out of it. Nice job!
I liked the way that turned out! Very nice.
Love the choice of live oak. Thanks for the video.
I do have to agree that handle is beautiful, awesome work and I’m sure you will be happy to pick it up. I’d be making up reasons to just so I can look at it.
Love it! The handle looks beautiful!
gorgeous piece of live oak! Anxious to see what videos you make using your new knife!
Thank you for sharing your skills and opinions.
Excellent content as usual.Always learning and planning to have a whole area of my shop dedicate to powerless building. I appreciate all you do.
Looks great! Simple and nice!
Thank you for all you do
Beautiful! I like that design!
i like the simple and easy projects gives me ideas for my weekends off from work
Thanks for this. Tried this once and learned a few things from your video
BLO, homemade is a lot of fun..
Loved the videos on Beaver Creek. Looking forward to trying out their stuff firsthand. Great content as usual James.
Great video! Always enjoy watching.
Sometimes simple is just what a handle needs. Well done
Looking forward to trying some live oak. Thanks for sharing the build.
This looks like something that I can do. Thank you for your time
Loved the video and want to say thanks for all the great content!
Perfect timing on this one! I plan on making a marking knife using post oak I harvested myself, and had not considered using a mortise/kerf like this. Great idea! Thanks!
James love what you did with making the knife you inspired me and answered my questions I was having about making a handle for a knife
Great looking live oak!
I have a couple Beaver Craft knives. I like them. Very nice handle. I tend to do the drill a hole and split a dowel method for flat tang blades. Thanks for the video!
Nicely done. Tool projects are the best.
Love the show. Makes me want to do more wood working.... or maybe just some whittling
Love the color pop
Always love your vids James, Im always learning another trick or skill!
That’s a beautiful knife handle! It seems like deciding what feels comfortable in your hand would just take time and experience.
Love the Live Oak!
Actually, simple projects are fine to me. It means I can do it without tons of tools I don't have and in few hours. Thanks.
I enjoy your videos you helped me go a long way . very informative thanks for sharing
Cool stuff! Making your own tools can be so satisfying!
Another awesome tool making video. Great to see your vids cause you include info with mistakes that let amateurs like me know that it’s gonna be ok.
Simple and easy sounds perfect. I watched a video earlier about carving the 5 minute wizard and he used a very similar carving knife. That live oak also does have a beautiful grain for an awesome knife!
Awesome James!
It's alive!!! At least now if you make a mistake when carving you can blame the knife.
Love the live oak!
Great information for making your own handles
That looks like it was a lot of fun to make.
I went beaver craft when i bought my whittling kit. Thinking it’s my go too
Cool Handle James!!!! Thank You!!! 👍😎😃
Beautiful live oak. I haven’t worked with that yet but definitely want to!
Really nice and easy project.
I have worked on stacked leather handles and I’ve done other wood projects. I am really interested in trying this. I am a beginner but I love trying new projects and knives are really cool.
looking forward to some whittling!
The handle turned out really nice. The live oak grain is fantastic. I think I’d probably like the octagonal handle more than the standard round one on my Mora carving knife.
Beautiful!
Great work on that knife!
that handle looks great
I enjoy the small projects you do, Keep up the great work James. As time is scarce it is great to be able to get into the shop and knock out a small project every now and then! Should have used the red gum. That would be my choice here is Australia!
Thank you for another great video!
nicely done!
That was interesting and very satisfying, thank you!
Very cool project.
After seeing the octagonal handles, I'm leaning more towards carving it into my handles. It certainly looks attractive
Amazing. Thank you.
That looks great
Thank you for the video!
Great video. Thanks.
