Making Yogurt With Strangers in Ecuador | Overland Travel Film
Another country. Another stamp in the passport. Another border between two worlds. Another culture to dive into.
The elevation number on our gps is higher than we’ve seen in awhile. We feel gratitude for the neighbouring mountains as they keep the rain to themselves. Our first taste of Ecuador leads us through valleys of desaturated greens and concrete livelihoods. The highways feel foreign with noticeably new tarmac and realistic speed signs.
We’ve been driving South for nearly one year. We’ll have about a month to explore Ecuador, our twelfth country on this trip. We’ll take you behind the scenes of conventional tourism, but also visit the most famous regions. After all, they’re famous for good reason.
We navigate a central path down the Andes after the border. This new pavement giving us a hint of what’s to come. These mountainous farmlands look like they were groomed yesterday. We’re hoping to get a closer look at what goes on between these perfectly manicured hedgerows.
We’ve been driving mountain shelf roads .
Latino road builders don’t seem to look twice at a mountain before carving a road into it. This one however, lead to the most unlikely places, known as the sanctuary of peace.
Quito, home to some 3 million people was the first city to be named by unesco as a world cultural heritage city. This list is continued by places that hold historical significance marked for outstanding importance to humanity. For us, we’re particularly interested in it’s Bascilica that took 17 years to build starting in 1892
During our one year on the road and twelve countries, we’ve visited a lot of churches, missions and basilicas. There are a few however that immediately strike us not only with their elaborate architecture and stained glass, but with the goosebumps upon entering. A place like this built with such purpose in mind, is surely to leave a mark on an open mind.
If you’ve been with us for a while, you’ll know that we built this truck in 100 days before we left Canada. Since then we’ve been adding little upgrades here and there. One upgrade that’s been on my mind is to move the front axle forward to allow us to remove our front coil spacer. This will make the truck sit more level, and also help with the caster angle, which affects steering. Our new friend Pablo was up for the task of welding, but after this project came the most unlikely experience to date.
Pablos family runs a work-away program on their farm. They make greek yogurt, cheese and other treats. When they asked us if we wanted to learn and take part in the process, it was an easy yes, but we had no idea what was involved.

Lying here in bed, I said "awesome...22 minutes too" - My wife said "What are you saying??.." - I said, "I'm living vicariously through these young people - They're excellent cinematographers, narrators and adventurers - Better than Discovery or NatGeo, because it's personal" - Awesome as always - Best from New England

Equador seemed much more settled and peaceful than Columbia. I find it interesting that two countries that are so similar in many ways can also be so different due to the political climate. Thank you guys for always including the churches, they tell such an interesting story of the faith and history of the people. Crossing the equator had to be a monumental mark on your trip and now you are no longer polywogs, but righteous shellbacks, the trusted subjects of Neptune, the god of water. On the other hand, I'm not sure this applies to land crossings (?). The art and expression of these people is also very interesting. Are the people actually more artistic, or does the government allow more public display of art? These 2nd or 3rd world countries seem to have their shit together so much more than the 1st world counties when it comes to enjoying life. Maybe because the 1st world counties always measure success in monetary terms. Once again, you guys rock.
@ToyotaWorldRunners
7 ай бұрын
It was fascinating to notice the difference almost instantly! On the public art, it's hard to speculate, we did see a lot of it in Colombia as well and I might hedge a bet that it's consistent throughout Latin America. It's beautiful to see, and when time allows to find the story written between the brush strokes! Our shellbacks are off again to a new country! Cheers Phil!
