Nice work Sir, Very clear videography. I enjoyed watching . Not many artisans will have the patience and skill required for such joinery. Appreciate that you keep this traditional style of joinery alive with modern woodworking machines and tools. Good job.

I did this out of nessesity. 1913 was missing three windows. Was the hardest thing I ever built. It's something you have to be set up for. The trial and error first go is incredibly time consuming. A wood shop here wouldn't even touch the job. Highly satisfying once completed.

Dear Sir you have inspired me to have a try on making an identical window as you have beautifully made , your equipment and over all shop setting is magnificent I thank you for sharing freely your expertise and workmanship , would you ever consider making a DVD on windows that can be purchased .

Love what you have done here, I've an old house to renovate in Karlskrona & like the idea you have for making the windows yourself..I shall give it a try! thx for posting this guide.

On the muntins, you use a shaper to cut the matching interior profiles in one pass? How and when do you cut the exterior rebates for the glass.

A use the shaper to cut the rebates. That’s done before the profile. There is some cutters that will cut both at the same time

@@WoodshopBygatan I was going to have a set of custom shaper knives cut, interior profile and exterior rebate then cut together in one pass. You appear to cut both exterior rebates in one pass and then cut both interior profiles in a second pass for the muntins. How do you cut the "mortices" for the 4 corners, with your morticer?

I’m using a bridal joint (upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/df/Joinery-CornerBriddleJoint.svg/800px-Joinery-CornerBriddleJoint.svg.png) so I’m using the shaper for this as well

Har en liknande setup och går i valet och kvalet att investera i lite fönsterfräsar. Ska göra 32 fönster till vårt hus, alternativt köpa. Jag undrar lite på vad du skulle estimera tidsåtgång per fönster, förutsatt att man gjort mallar och jiggar för ett fönster. Fönster är dyrt att köpa men inte allt för svårt att göra, men allt är en tidsfråga. :)

How do you make that 45 degree cut if you don't have a table saw?

It doesn't appear you are coping the interior profiles on the top and bottom rails at the 4 corners.

I’m sorry but I don’t think I understand what you mean. Unfortunately I don’t have any footage of making the stiles and the rails. But the counter-profile on the rails is made as on the muntins.

As I was walking down the local village streets I noticed one thing about the muntins in houses: the vertical muntins are dominant over the horizontal muntins being at right angles, but, your design has the horizontal piece as dominant? Why is that? Is there an advantage?

@@WoodshopBygatan The muntin design of construction you display has the horizontal member muntin as looking as one continuous line breaking the vertical member muntin. Whereas I see most of the vintage construction around Chicago being with the vertical muntin member being (dominant) as the vertical meets the horizontal. When we make the rails and styles we have the styles being dominant over the rails at the corners. I am self taught as I was in printing for the first 50 years; so I have had to 'look see' at other's work on most of the projects. The internet has been invaluable for me in learning how to do the work. Your videos are a big help. I had to gamble when I had the custom router bit made for the muntins as there were no muntin router bits on the market that matched the Felder tooling. I have a 4 X 4 moulder head made in Wisconsin by Black and Decker and can run corrugated knives but that is not the right sizing for the frail muntin designs; so the router bit approach. Oh, bye the bye, my father's side is from Wiltshire UK and my mother's side is from Stemmen Germany; so you see I have the square head. All my uncles had square heads.

I want the vertical bar to be continuous on the outside face, just to prevent water to get in. On the inside, the vertical bar i broken, and the horizontal bar is dominant. Hope you understand what I mean :) Thanks for your comment!

@@WoodshopBygatan Thanks and I will follow your lead as I plan to make a main entry door in near future of walnut with 2-1/4" thick and some double glass vacuum windows. Saving for some tooling to complete the project.

Har egentligen inte använt så många stål. Till profilen har jag använt detta: www.felder-group.com/sv-se/shop/profilstal-40-mm-sc109373/profilstal-04-4-043-sp109420 Annars har jag använt vanlig falsstål samt en slitsfräs. Hade jag köpt idag hade jag kollat mer på Toolbox profiler för fönster, de har lite större utbud, men dock lite dyrare.

Can't recommend any set I'm afraid, I'm using a standard slot/disc cutter on my shaper. Also using two different types of euro shaper knifes, one with a S-shape for the profiles, and one for the rabates where the glass is supposed to go

I have Felder shaper and boring machine for slot and square chisel. Felder sells a counter profile cutter for windows and doors that is 32-40MM thickness under part number 04.1.047 ogee that produces same profile on 2S. I am warning that you may have to eat cheese sandwiches for a while when buying such.?!! There are ways to use the 04.1.065 and expand a little in thickness but no where close to 1-1/8" total. I have the 04.1.065 and have muntin tooling that matches that ogee profile. There are a host of different approaches to making a tenon to connect with the rail and style or I sometimes use the boring machine to dowel the connection. The Felder FD250 boring machine is very accurate for such doweling and I would not attempt drilling with any other machine. The Italians probably have some tooling that will fill your needs for doors and windows and Rangate may have the solution but again we are talking lots of cheese sandwiches and no soup for you.!? @@richardmckrell4899 Good to hear you had a router custom made. I had the counter profile tooling from Felder and copied that profile and got the muntin profile of same size for cabinet and window construction. Had to go around with the bit maker several times before they got the idea. The problem with router bits that are mass produced is that they tend to make them of the smaller diameter which puts a deeper-steeper cut all along as you pass the wood by the bit. So, I had them go with a 1/2" shaft and 3" diameter that is less stress on the wood. The less stress on the wood meaning less wood is removed with each revolution of the tooling. Those large 9" diameter toolings put such a nice finish on the cut because of the larger diameter. Big tires on a car have a larger foot print to the road. My profiles are for 18MM thickness wood with the ogee on one side 1S. A lady came to me and had 6 windows of cut/stained glass from a house of 1920's-30's. I had to run a groove of 5/16" into the cut profile just to house the glass with all that solder and edging. I chose white oak and brass 1" wide loops at the top to hang those heavy pieces not wanting to use screws with eyes. Her house is the 1923 Electric Farm connected to Edison of NJ for displaying and selling electric service to houses in Chicago. I will have to shoot a picture of that house on an upcoming video. For the 45 degree cuts at right angle muntins I use a Japan cross cut saw and a custom miter box of maple. My grandfather, Arthur, gave me a 15 tooth saw for miter work but I would rather use the Asian high count tooth saw with no tear out or chisel work required. It's just cheese sandwiches all the way.?! when we get into those custom tools but that's the fun of it all.

Just once I'd like to see an instructional video using basic shop tools like most of us have, rather than this collection of incredible tools that most of us will never own. It's helpful but not helpful.
