I remember when these bunkers came out. I actually just got my ruler, compass and protractor out and drew my own pattern on to the back of some cereal packets. Also, if you layer up the arches, aquilas etc, attach it to a solid base and use a bit of pollyfiller to add some texture, it looks way more solid than a bit of folded card.

As a teenager, I made those papercraft bunkers and fighting positions from white dwarf for our battlefields. A year or so ago, I got inspired by seeing them again, and had the idea of building them again, only out of foamcore and heavier duty materials. They came out pretty good, though I am yet to paint them. Eventually that will happen.

I built a few bunkers not too dissimilar to this a few years ago out of foam board and card. Even painted them up. But I didn't like the paint job, so sprayed over it, intending to paint them again. And then they went into my terrain storage tub in the garage and haven't been touched since. Whoops.

Lovely work! You're only missing one thing for teh true classic... foam balls with toothpick inserts to make Space Cacti! Yep. feeling real old, cause I would personally consider modular marines and "dark eldar' to be modern miniatures. Retro (for me) is mono-pose plastic and metal, with pva and sand bases, none of that posh flock. Our terrain was of course 3 tier hills carved from white packing foam, coated in the previously mentioned pva + sand... placed directly onto a ping pong table in the garage lol. TBH, I don't really miss retro, todays toys are much better. Oh and Pro tip from my 12 y/o self some 30 years ago: Glue stick those templates onto some cereal box cardboard before cutting them out to get your bunkers nice and ridged.

With that kind of fold up terrain, a good thing to do with it is to grab some sharpies and take ones that come close to the colors and hit the corners/fold lines there. Also, while paper banners were one thing, some of the metallic tubes of stuff being cut up for banners was another major thing, a bit of a sand to rough it up and a layer of spray paint works with it.

Loved the goofy side of the 40K stuff then, Like Guardsmen being named after people who worked on the 1966 Batman TV show. What I did to make buildings was to get packaging foam from electronics, like VCRs and stereos, etc, They had weird shapes, I'd cut and then fit them together, and then plaster over them, adding doors, etc where needed. Worked great, and easy to paint. Dirt cheap too.

I really miss the paper banners, I was just discussing this with a friend while working on my Armorcast Reaver. For sizing up the bunkers, take the largest piece, size it up until it fills a page, note the percentage then just increase all the others by the same amount and they should match nicely and be a good size.

So I built the terrain that came with the 2nd Ed set and it took me a week or two to work out why it looked different to what was in the White Dwarf. Then I picked it and started painting the edges and tops of the walls with the colours relevant to the art on the sides. Looking at that one I think your building would look so much better with the corners and edges painted grey.

going to cast doubt on murray saying older models did not get converted as much. as many kits did not exist, you had to convert to get what you wanted, and it was the sign of status to have seriously converted your army. and some of us were converting metal models, it barely counts if you don't have to use a hacksaw for an arm swap!

I think you were a touch hard on the classic plastics by saying they weren't good for converting. They were cross compatible with all the other Space Marine kits at the time, meaning creating individual guys was easy with a few boxes, and they were cheaper back then. Paying about £20-something for a box when you want multiples is much more of a viable approach than it is today where you're paying double that. I ended up having to split my Space Wolves bits box into one for power armour and one for Terminator & Scout armour as I mixed kits around so much to make each Space Wolf in my army as individual as possible.

Those Marines and Dark Eldar came out in the fall of '98, and they were a significant innovation compared to the plastic kits from 2E. A little imagination, and a few extra bits, and they were very much customizable. Banner poles fell out of favour in early 3E for various reasons. I'd bet the chief reason was that transporting the models in carrying cases wasn't as easy with the poles. They also broke fairly easily.

And then one day the 90s turn in the 2000 (which where the continuation of the 90s but with matrix 2) and the 2000 in the 2020s and everything went to the toilet extremely fast like a turd with nitrous oxide drifting on a canyon enveloped in fire.
