Making the "Persephone" Chain |

With springtime right around the corner, what better way to celebrate the changing of the seasons than to honor the Persephone Chain. I designed this piece back in October of 2021 and, somehow, I’ve never gotten around to sharing it anywhere other than in my shop and, even still, she’s found her way into a good number of your hearts.
-
In Greek mythology, Persephone is known as both the Queen of the Underworld and the Goddess of the Spring. She is a lovely young maiden who drew the attention of many suitors. Her mother, Demeter, watched over her and protected her from the darkness of the world. One such darkness being Hades, the God of the Underworld. Hades, who rarely left the confines of his realm, became immediately infatuated with the youthful beauty of Persephone. Love at first sight led him to approach her father, Zeus, and request her hand in marriage.
With Zeus’s approval, the only obstacle that stood in their way was Demeter who promptly denied this union. Hades took matters into his own hands and abducted Persephone, dragging her through the earth and trapping her in the Underworld as his queen. As Demeter searched and grieved for her daughter, she neglected her godly duties as Goddess of the Harvest, leading to failed crops, drought, and famine. The suffering cries of mortals were heard by Zeus who intervened and decreed that, if it could be proven that Persephone was being held against her will, he would bring her back to Olympus. However, Hades caught onto this plan and tricked his new bride into eating six pomegranate seeds which were enchanted to cause whoever ate them to miss the Underworld. When brought before Zeus, he asked Persephone where she wanted to live and she chose to stay with her husband.
Demeter refused to accept this arrangement and threatened never to quench the soil again. In response, Zeus proposed a compromise that Persphone would spend half the year in the Underworld and the other half in Olympus. Because of this arrangement, when Demeter is stripped of her daughter’s presence, the land becomes barren and when they are together, the vegetation flourishes.

I love this design because Persephone's story is the heart/center that connects all other Greek stories together! She's kind of like the Kevin Bacon of Greek mythology

I remember when nothing was available to order and all artists were making all their own rings and studying extant pieces. Things have come a long way from destroying many dremel tools in run down apartments and having shards of metal all over.
