Making the PBS logo (1990's)
Here's a mini documentary on how PBS made their 1990's logo. It's always fun to look back at things like this. I'm glad they made this!
This was produced by WGBH.
(If you're from WGBH and want this removed, just ask. I'll be happy to do so, no harm done. In the meantime, it's simply here for amusement.)

Feels so weird seeing that without hearing the voiceover saying "This is PBS."

Just ... so used to the voiceover, it feels almost foreign hearing the ident without it, at least for the first dozen times.

@@alexmccaffery2608 What a rather dark logo for this decade! The 1990s were always quite dark when it came to logos.
Marketing, whether it is for beer, clothes, tires, or a network identifier, is so important. This is a perfect example of the tons of research just to get 'the look' right. Thanks for sharing.

*4:17** RIGHT AFTER THAT LOGO THEY SHOULD'VE SHOWN THE 1984 PBS LOGO REPRESENTING ''(THE ORIGINAL SPLIT)''!*
I think i may have briefly seen this logo once when I was like 3 or 4. For reference, I was born in 1994. Because the music in it sounds WEIRDLY familiar. That being said, I can’t believe this was NOT made with cgi. That’s pretty neat!
This is my favorite PBS logo. Thank you for uploading this! :)

Awesome and creative!
I love all three classic logos: from 1971, 1984 and the 1989 one, but the current 2019 bumper is outstanding, so simple, yet beautiful.

After 11 years, has anyone found a better quality version, being at least 30 FPS? Still, a great insight into bumper production for television!
Interesting documentary
I wish they made a new version of this documentary.

You know, speaking of logos, I'm curious to know how WNED's logos were created... especially the "skyline" logo from the 80s that all the various Mark Russell specials used.

was there any video/film to the design of the 1989 ID? Would be interested to see the process from start to finish and what was their reasoning for that rebrand.
Thanks, for noticing.
My right ear disliked it.
Where did you find this? And are there more mini-documentaries on making other PBS logos?

Beautiful!
What a niche video concept lol. But very interesting! Totally up my alley

1989 PBS Logo was the best

I hated the 1989 logo. The black screen gave me a false feeling that the TV was turned off and then the glass P-Heads mysteriously step onto the screen thereafter. Quiet music also hurts too here. Georgia GPTV skipped this PBS logo and continued using the 1989 logo throughout the 1990s. I moved out in 1996 so I don’t know when they updated their PBS ID.

*TRIVIA~ THIS IS THE VERY FIRST DIVERSITY PBS LOGO! (not left-wing diversity that excludes white people.) HERE ARE THE FOLLOWING DIVERSITY PBS LOGOS:* *1998* *2002* *2009* *NON-DIVERSITY PBS LOGOS:* *1970 (the actual one from 1970 with the PUBLIC in red, BROADCASTING in yellow and SERVICE in blue)* *1971 (the one @**0:00**)* *1984 (the one @**0:16**)* *1989 (the one @**0:24**)* *1995 (satellite feed #1)* *1996 (the voice-over for which would proceed with the following logo from 1998.)* *2000 (satellite feed #2)*
a bunch of white people sitting around talking about how they want to show the diversity that PBS is all about?
