Making the Most of Herbal Leys - A Webinar for Farmers

Watch, in full, a webinar for farmers, presented by Ian Wilkinson. In the webinar we look at using deep-rooting, diverse herbal leys as a way to combat some of the problems we are facing on farms in the UK today.
Cheap cereal prices, high input costs and soil fertility concerns can be helped by using diverse leys, which help improve soil quality, provide superfood for livestock, and eventually lead to long term, sustainable profit on your farm.
We look at how this is not a new idea, with some historical examples stretching back more than 200 years, as well as some modern day farmers who all use diverse leys on their farm. Ian then talks us through the process; planning a diverse rotation, then establishing and managing the ley, using real life examples from Honeydale Farm as he goes.

Excellent presentation. Thank you for taking the time to do that. Just about to go and get Elliots book out of RAU library. I look forward to the subsequent presentation you mentioned - if you could compare a) the costings of conventional v's ley system and b) compare the organic matter percentage before and after, that would be fantastic.

Thanks for such an informative webinar. I think, in the UK, as we look at the post Brexit future (with probably much lower subsidies) then rotational systems are going to become much more important. As a small upland farmer in Northern Ireland, I wonder what your thoughts are on establishing herbal leys into permanent pasture. Some of my land is classed as unimproved or semi improved grassland & thus qualified for additional payments under a previous Countryside Management Scheme. The downside was that the land got poor with low inputs. I'm now wondering if establishing herbal leys (without ploughing) is a way to get better production form those. I'm conscious of what you've said about 'no till' challenges in establishing herbal leys.
