Fun fact: an older version of Yume Nikki was uncovered and in this version, you got the Fat effect by examining a mirror. I guess Kikiyama thought that was too obvious

i think yume nikki is so special because of its total lack of narrative and direction... the game never ever tells you how to feel or how to interpret anything and it makes it feel so intimate. its the kind of game that everyone connects to and feels in their own way. because of its emptiness it allows you to find your own sadness, happiness, anxiety, and even humor. To me, yume nikki is such a unique game that the way it makes me feel is really hard to describe. also theres gonna be spoilers in this comment so be warned. the game feels like a very authentic representation of what loneliness feels like in a way thats hard to express. heres what i mean: people create their sense of self and meaning in relation to other people, and knowing what others feel makes us have a sense of truth. so the lack of structure and narrative, and the lack of characterization of madotsuki feels like a representation of the feeling of being totally isolated. youd think that the fact that we know absolutely nothing about madotsuki would make it hard to empathize with her, and maybe thats true for some people, but i think it lets you feel her loneliness firsthand in a way that only a game like yume nikki could. after all, without other people, how would you know what kind of person you are? how could you say anything about your identity or your personality, without any reference? her self is a collection of disconnected sensations and feelings which she explores through dreams. words are pretty meaningless when you know no one will ever hear them, so whats the point of showing what she is writing in her diary? and what is it all for? all she has is her own mind, deteriorating slowly like a circular fallacy, as it has no reference outside of itself... so after seeing everything it had to offer, and unable to escape her loneliness, death is all that is left. So there... thats my best at trying to describe my experience with the game. I cant remember when i first played it, but ive been playing it for quite a long time, ever since i was around 13 or 14 so. around 7 years ago. i played it again during quarantine but honestly sometimes it felt too real and too sad to play. To me yume nikki is absolutely a really tragic and heart wrenching game, in a way a traditional story couldnt really be... a lot of people these days are experiencing loneliness at higher numbers than ever. i dont know if many people had the same feelings i had while playing this game, but im sure a lot people resonate with this game because of its possible theme of loneliness. in a way, a game like OMORI is a more structured game that deals with the same feelings, bringing a lot of emotional understanding into it. but i think there is also something comforting about the quiet loneliness of yume nikki.

I certainly think yume nikki has a more abstract lonliness thats really hard to recreate elsewhere, thank you so much for watching!

My personal theory is that the dream worlds represent Madotsukis view of the world. I think she wasnt assaulted or killed anyone. I think everything that happens in the game is how Madotsuki views the things that happen in the world. Seeing all the negative stuff that happens in the world, she isolates herself as a way to escape, but her dreams still haunt her, so she "unalives" herself.
@callen.johnson

I think thats a wonderful theory! Your idea really reflects the hikikomori aspect of the game, I think if there was a proper interpretation for the game's story this would probably be it. Thanks for watching!

Hi! Very iteresting video! I recently just discovered this game thanks to my friend, and completed it today! I believe that Madotsuki isolation is caused by all reasons explained by theories in video. Madotsuki isolated herself after she saw how cruel world can be. Violence, Accidents, Sexual Violence etc. All dreams/worlds dont cover only 1 trauma or event but her whole personality. She sees other people as aliens (except some), she likes Mythical and crypid stuff like witches and UFOs. She likes Games (Earthbound style worlds). She loves Nature (Forest worlds, Cats, frogs etc) Madotsuki probably had trouble in society and is afraid of violence that she had seen, which resulted in her isolation where she sleeps all day. Her dreams twist and warp her life expirience into something else. But probably this game has no concrete story in the first place :) P.S excuse my bad english, i tried my best.

I've always found Yume Nikki to be a fascinating dive, though it doesn't have as much depth as it first appears. Yes, it's a surreal and mesmerizing journey, and even I think it's something incredibly unique. But the development stopped at some point, and that point makes it feel like you've seen it all. It's one of my few grievances with Yume Nikki. It's certainly an expansive world, but once you know what to look for, that's it. And that's why I love how its community has been inspired. Countless fan creations, expanding on the concepts present in Yume Nikki in new and interesting ways. Reinventing the concept of this game, with their own inspirations and identity. In that way, that's what makes it some one of the best games I've ever seen.

I didn't really feel the "never quite alone creepy" vibe in yume nikki. I actually found it calming much more than it was ever unsettling. even when it did unsettle me I still felt calmed by it. yume nikki feels a bit like walking through a series of memories of emotions, if that makes sense. I think of the different areas of the game as a subconscious manifestation of different emotional phases of her life, likening the hiddenness of different areas to their respective memories' repressedness or how much madotsuki has forgotten about them. there were specific places in yume nikki where as I ventured to find them I felt as though I was delving into my own mind as much as I was madotsuki's. when I saw mars-san, I sat next to him for at least 20 minutes, and I think I cried. perhaps it's no surprise that as a socially anxious weird girl I should find myself empathising so heavily with madotsuki's dreams, but it still shocks me how much of an effect this game has on me. I don't think any other piece of media has ever hit me the same way and I doubt any ever will.

Hey thanks for commenting! Back when I made this video I would have definitely told you that Yume Nikki scared me. But as I've gotten older and the world has opened up to me, I've found a weird sense of comfort within Madotsuki's dream world as well. It's familiar, safe (mostly), and I can leave whenever I want. In a lot of ways Yume Nikki feels like home for me. Thanks for watching!
@radiotomatosauce99
2 ай бұрын
@@callen.johnson isn't that interesting how it is so often comforting despite the subject matter? maybe part of it is that I assume that madotsuki regards her dreams as a comfortable enough escape from the real world. part of it too is that the game usually leans more bizarre than it does scary. something that strikes me about the game is how many characters are distinctly alien without feeling hostile. it's like you're a child learning what things are for the first time. in that way I feel like I was able to get into a kind of childlike headspace playing yume nikki, because everything is so confusing that it sort of reduces everything to "this music is scary so I think this is not a good place to be in" rather than some logical conclusion about there flesh and stuff being everywhere being a bad thing, because the game is just like that sometimes I guess. at the same time, it gave me the ability to approach the various characters in the game with the specific kind of childhood open mindedness, such that, even though if I were to ever encounter most any character from yume nikki in real life I would freak out, within the context of the game they mostly read as "friend :)". I think that's interesting
@callen.johnson
2 ай бұрын
I totally agree! I've been thinking about redoing this video for a while now & talking more about my personal relationship with the game. The stuff you bring is up super relatable and I often find myself feeling exactly the same way about the bizzare nature of Madotsuki's dream world. A big part of that is my inability to find comfort or safety within most aspects of my life, but Yume Nikki has a unique way of capturing that safety I desire so bad and distilling it into it's own little world for me to explore. Kikkiyama is really a genius of atmosohere and art direction for accomplishing something like that.

I feel like the reason why nothing will recreate the feeling of Yume Nikki is because YN is the unexpected. You never know what you'd find around the corner. Not only the content, but the feeling it'd give you too. Is the next room going to be scary, cute, disturbing ? Trying to recreate is by définition, giving the same feeling. You know the range of émotions the new game would give you because if it's too différent, it wouldn't be a Yume Nikki-like. Although, a game that gave me similar feelings for its entire length was OFF, a belgian game ( I'm belgian, yay) that also inspired Undertale. It gives the similar vibes of aaaaaah O_O , oh... For me, I have such a unique relationship with my dreams. Things that appear in your dreams don't have to be things you experienced, but things you've seen and things you fear may happen to you. I think dreams are a reflection of the psyche and memories, thoughts, and feelings that reoccur the most throughout your day and life. My personal interpretation of Yume Nikki is that the things that are theorized to have happened or happened around Nikki fall short, I think its a combination of EVERYTHING. Sexual assault, driving accidents, murder, violence, those are all things potentially Nikki has SEEN or at least heard about and those things are the irrational fears that keep her from leaving her home. Overall a great video, I hope to see more from you soon!

I only discovered Yume Nikki around July of last year, and I only began my playthrough in August. Since then, it has become my absolute favourite game. I loved it's nonsensical nature and I found a profound comfort within it. It managed to depict a type of confusion I was experiencing at the time, and I fell in love with almost every room. Don't even get me STARTED on the soundtrack. The soundtrack is composed very strangely but much like the odd nature of the gameplay, it gives a fantastical vibe from it. My favourite tracks from the game would have to be Checkered Tile Path, Martian Underground, Mars, Teleport Maze, FEVER and FC Pyramids. I genuinely feel like naming the entire soundtrack but those are the ones that stick out to me the most. Amazing video, dude. This was great! If I had a hat on, I'd definitely be taking it off right now. Though it has certainly been quite some time that I watched a Yume Nikki video or interacted with the fandom in any sense, this has to be what I hold as the best video on this entire website on the game. It's truly funny, we both found this game by the EXACT SAME means haha and I can certainly say the same in terms of what that discovery led to artistically and personally. This video wastes no time to be redundant or explain things outside of what it needs to, much opposite to what I feel a lot of more recent videos on the game do. I have a strong feeling that some are going to find this video and then go on to play the game for the first time with the best initial push they could've received, its mystique/charm and overall surprises still for the most part in tact. Theories have always been somewhat grazed over, but using the context of the game to use a good entire half of the video to discuss them and then further using that to tie it into the main idea of the video of the game as a tool to help the player truly walk through their own ideas of self and conscious in almost ink-blot fashion made my eyelids spring open. I'm so glad I could find a video that encapsulated what makes this game so important to me and someone else. It truly stands above even the legendary original Jordan Underneath video that brought Yume Nikki to a forefront of popular youtube culture. I'm not sure if you plan on making more introspective videos, but if you do I can certainly say there is much to anticipate.

i think yume nikki is so special because of its total lack of narrative and direction... the game never ever tells you how to feel or how to interpret anything and it makes it feel so intimate. its the kind of game that everyone connects to and feels in their own way. because of its emptiness it allows you to find your own sadness, happiness, anxiety, and even humor.
@callen.johnson
Жыл бұрын
I certainly think yume nikki has a more abstract lonliness thats really hard to recreate elsewhere, thank you so much for watching!
My personal theory is that the dream worlds represent Madotsukis view of the world. I think she wasnt assaulted or killed anyone. I think everything that happens in the game is how Madotsuki views the things that happen in the world. Seeing all the negative stuff that happens in the world, she isolates herself as a way to escape, but her dreams still haunt her, so she "unalives" herself.
@callen.johnson

@radiotomatosauce99
@callen.johnson

Ah yes a new creator coming out with a banger in my feeds. I hope to see more from you! It's nice to see more creators really appreciate this piece of art. This game was a lot to me growing up. I originally came across it when my sister showed me Loudman's playthrough (the FIRST playthrough on KZread) back when it was still being recorded. I encourage ANYONE watching this video to really dig into the fan games and the community as a whole.

I really always liked to think that yume nikki has no meaning, it is some artwork using different designs and themes created by the k, wich also i respect and admire a lot because making tilesets, textures AND EVENTS is so hard (from experience) and it was even harder in 2004. But really awesome consideration you did from this game and giving your thoughts and theories, you make awesome content, i wil support you :)

Thanks so much for commenting, there are currently 2 BIG projects in the works and im very excited to release them. In terms of the games meaning to me its always just been about finding beauty in dreams. It doesn't have to mean anything, say anything, or have a point of any sort to be beautiful. For me thats what yume nikki is about

The first time I ever heard of this game, was thru a friend but also thru the music. I’ve always liked songs that make you feel a certain way and the songs in this game are just so incredible to me and I just like to have such an infatuation with them. i’ve never played the game but i might just walk aimlessly forever just for the music

also wanted to say the song that plays when you write in your diary always made me feel happy, it always gave me a different vibe than all of the other songs, but I had no clue that the song is supposed to lighten the players mood and have a different vibe then the dream world songs

Lmao yume nikki will put you in a weird state of being if you play it sleep deprived (speaking from experience) thank you so much for watching!
I loved hearing about your experiences and your opinions on this wonderful game. Keep it up, man! Thanks for letting me relive this game again !!

My one gripe with yume nikki is the fact that it can be really frusterating to beat the game without looking up a walkthrough lmao, thanks for commenting!
@callen.johnson

Then it turns out i need to make a yume2kki video...
I think that serial killer theory is ridiculous, anyone can have violent dreams. Hell, some antidepressants can even cause blood and gore to become a common sight. I took prozac for five yeara and had the most fucked up disgusting dreams almost every night. About a month after I stopped taking itz my dreams became normal again and I now sleep like a baby.
@callen.johnson

I agree 100% but for some reason its such a popular theory? It might have something to do with the rising popularity of games like yandere sim around the time yume nikki was gaining its first wave of popularity? Idk, its Definitely not supported by enough evidence to even be considered

So many theories, and all of them all chilling. Yume Nikki is vague on purpose while using dreams as an excuse to make the player come to their own conclusion while never confirming or denying anything.
