Death, and dealing with the loss of someone is a very difficult and awkward subject for most of us to deal with, but Robin, my goodness, you did an amazing job. Not just all the cards and techniques you shared, but the way you talked to us, your viewers, about the subject. Encouraging us to think about what we want to say and how to express that, when reaching out to the loved ones of the person who has passed. Advice on colour choices and layouts - even suggesting using our own hand-writing to give that extra personal touch. You clearly put a lot time, effort and thought into putting this video together and I just want to say a heartfelt thank you for all you do for us who follow you. I watched this video at just the right time. My children lost their father 3 weeks ago. My son looked after him for the past 5 years. Their dad and I divorced over 40 years ago, but we developed a friendship over the years, and I was there, with my children, when he passed. I wanted to send my son a note to tell him how proud I am of him for what he did for his dad. thank you for the inspiration.

Glad that you managed to become friends. Rough on your guys. My youngest tends to come over on Sunday evening and his dad calls and I can hear the whole conversation. One night he said something and I just spontaneously popped off and said something and his dad laughed. I knew it was one of his rare laughs where he caught the joke and truly thought it was funny. He has some problems, but I knew that was the probably the first time he had genuinely laughed in a long time. That is as far as friendship we would have. He insisted to the youngest not to give me his phone number, never thinking that if something happens to the boys, I would most likely be the one that calls him. Otherwise, I have nothing to talk to him about. He doesn't want me to know his address, etc. and he is 72. I have heard of couples still be friendly after a divorce, but if I could have been his friend then, I would have never gone through a divorce. But I am glad your boys and you are deealing with it.

All your cards were beautiful and very appropriate for invoking emotion (imo). I too like the look of muted soft tones for these types of cards but you showed me how to change my usual style for sympathy cards. I LOVE the water color technique and thought both looks were stunning. Personally, I know I would feel the emotion intended if I were sad and received any of the cards you made. I think they speak volumes. Unfortunately, I'm needing to make a sympathy card for a dear friend who just lost a fur baby. Any of these techniques will really help me convey the emotion I'm feeling and hope she too will feel. Thank you so much for taking the time to express your reasoning for each style. It made a huge difference for me and the video went way beyond what I was anticipating for sympathy cards (shame on me). Your cards were beautiful as well as your thoughts, explanation for each technique.... I could go on and on..... TFS Robin. Perfect...

Hi Robin. I really appreciated this video. The cards were all exquisite. My takeaway from this is that you really can't go wrong using a nature motif. I wanted to share with you and your viewers a book that was recommended to me which I have found quite useful -- not only for sympathy cards but many other occasions. It is called "Words to the Rescue: The sentiment guide for the tongue tied". It is written by Steve Fadie. I was able to order it on Amazon. These are simply gorgeous. Thank you for the demonstration. I am so hesitant to try any watercolor techniques, but I lead two card guilds and I'm so wanting to do something like this with them. Robin, this was very very good! Thank you so much for sharing this! I agree with everything that you said and the style of cards that you were using. I basically do the same thing. I enjoyed the water color and color blocking techniques with the images. I generally use nature stamps and birds.

Sympathy cards are something that seems to be lacking in card making supplies. I rarely find any stamps that say with sympathy or anything else, so I appreciate this video. My mother died in March at 94 years old. My stepdad is taking it hard. I have sent him several cards and he has talked to me on the phone about them and says he will treasure them and not put them away. I had never even thought of that till now that it is a common thing. I'm 68 so more on the side of folks dying that getting married or having babies, etc. One thing I do plan to do since I have the ability to machine embroider words and I have gotten some sheer ribbon that I can embroider With Syimpathy on it., or Thinking of You, and with appropriate colors Best Wishes for weddings. I know in the past black was for deaths in the family and then dark purple and then lavendar, so I have ribbons in those colors. Not that we practice dressing in certain colors, but at least those are some colors to springboard off of.

Another great video of yours that I found! I often worry not so much about what to say, but how elaborate a card to make. I worry how too fancy a card might mistakingly undermine the note of sympathy.

May I suggest that not sending a sympathy card right away can be a good thing. When there is a loss, friends and family are typically available to offer comfort/support while the recipient is almost overwhelmed by just breathing. After a few weeks, when the loss is really sinking in, everyone else has gone on with their busy lives. They aren’t being mean; they are able to move on because the loss isn’t in their face every moment of every day as it is when the person lost lives in one’s household. That is when I try to make an extra offer to “be there” with thinking of you sentiments and actions.
