Making rolags using scrap yarn
I am using up scrap yarn to make some rolags today! Corriedale cross white wool with some unknown wool scraps and a little purple fiber. Trying to match a skein I made last month and I think it worked well. Blending board is homemade with an old TV tray top and carding cloth purchased online.
I'm wearing a sweater I knit from reclaimed and overdyed cashmere. Pattern is

Your daughter is such a cutie, and I love her enthusiasm! It's nice to see her interest in the craft. Thanks to you both for showing how to make these lovely rolags!💖
I'm so glad I'm not the only one remaking fiber from yarns. I've been doing it for years, before anyone was doing videos like this. When I was learning to use a drop spindle it was difficult to find wool that hadn't been fumigated, and hubby has chemical sensitivities, so I broke down acrylic yarns. I love that you're adding the yarn scraps to wool. That opens up a lot of possibilities, and I do have some wool from my recent adventures to my first wool festival. Thanks so much for the inspiration. You're daughter is so cute in her excitement. Oh, to help get the fibers that stick in your blending board, I've found that just rocking your dog brush over them makes them lift and most will go to the dog brush. Not dragging it brushing, just set the brush on the area and rock the brush. Bye bye bye 😘
Wow! I have never seen this before. Interesting ❣🇨🇦
Love watching you do this and I love the frugal nature of this.
Oh my gosh your daughter is adorably hilarious 😂 and also a girl after my own heart. Unicorn hair, look how sparkly it is, but also only a tiny bit of white because I need to put this dark color on, and baaa baaa I'm a dead sheep. I lost it at the dead sheep comment 😂

She is non stop, isn't she? She loves the sparkle!
Gorgeous. I do that all the time, save my left overs for blending. I'm glad I'm not alone!!! Thank you.
Mrs Mustache made me smile!! Very cute! You have reminded me how fun rolags are to make! 😀
that's cool! always good to have a helper!
Wonderful video! Such a joy to see your daughter ….. she is fun!
Amazing! I'm a beginner at spinning yarn who loves upcycling so this video was very joyful for me to watch. Also, where I live is not very easy to purchase fibers for spinning, so I thought about reusing yarn and this is extremely inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing this experience here! Your rolags turned out beautiful💖
Hi , I love this video podcast. Lovely Rolags and your daughter is so sweet. Hope you've had a lovely weekend. Take care and stay safe Love and hugs Jen xxxx ❤️❣️🫂🐑
What a brilliant idea!! Now I can use all those left over yarn ends. Thank you for sharing this.

Glad it was helpful! I need to do this again soon with my scraps.
That's a great idea for my scraps - thank you! Love your board too, I've got carders but I can see this working really well.

Thanks! These boards are pretty easy to make, the hardest part is waiting for the carding cloth to come in the mail.
This was so satisfying to watch! Now I want to make some rolags! 😅
Lovely! It's so cool to see you and your daughter so happy together and sharing Love of beautiful fibers!
What a great video and your daughter is beautiful creative and intelligent! ☺️

Thank you so much!
Would love to watch your daughter make some rolags. She is soon cute. And very interested in the process. I'm subscribing in the hope of seeing her again.
So pretty. Sometimes I just want to keep the rolags because they are so beautiful. I have cut 1 inch pieces of wool and run them through the drum carder with all my other fibers. The result is what I call confetti yarn when you spin it. It's really fun! Blessings.

Try using a nylon dish washing brush to clean up the board. The brush with the long handle

Good idea! I'll have to try that.
oh I did something like that once when I was trying a needle felting project but didn’t want to spend the extra money and time trying to find a roving color that worked!! i just bought a regular skein of yarn that I liked the color of (ended up using a caron simply soft one), cut it into manageable chunks and then used a metal dog grooming brush to turn it into “roving” - I held one side of it in my hand and the just brushed the…. brush kdhdkdkd over my leg (covered by a bedsheet to keep from snagging lol). since I only needed small handfuls at a time it worked doing it that way, but now I wonder if I could use it in wider bunches to experiment with drop spinning or something with out risking dropping money on a project I end up not sticking with kdjdskdsk

Oh that's interesting! I've never thought of using scraps in felting. I may need to try that!
I do this with my little bits and pieces that are just trimmings. I don't worry about colors. I use 2 large dog brushes. When I get enough I spin it and make something from literally scraps 😊

Oh, that's a good idea! Do you not mix it with any fiber though? I feel like it would take a long time to get enough for a project! But I bet it looks very cool.

@@revivedyarns I'm not usually making anything big. Just a pot holder or something. I just think it's neat. I have a little homemade spindle made from a piece of dowel rod and an old cd. It's not a big production thing. Just for my own entertainment.

@@lindachandler2293 Sometimes that is the best type of craft- just for fun! I actually should try that and use the fiber to needle felt something and see how it turns out.
Hello What is that board with spikes called? and where can you get them? Thanks :)

It's a blending board and can be found on etsy, in yarn stores and from lots of online places! I made this one by ordering the blending cloth from Howard Brush online and stapling it to the top of a tv tray.
Roughly what is the combined weight of one board worth of rolags for you?
@revivedyarns
Жыл бұрын
I just did some today and weighed them for you! They worked out to between 20 and 21 grams on each board and I would get four rolags out of it.
Normally, when carding with hand cards, you use the teeth with the bends opposing one another. It looks to me like when you're running your dog brush over your board, the dog brush teeth are pointing in the same direction as your board teeth. Am I seeing that correctly? If so can you share your rationale¿
@revivedyarns

Yes, they do face the same way with a blending board. On hand cards, you want to pull wool off one card onto the other but on a blending board, you use it to pack the wool down so more can be added on top. I've seen some people use large paintbrushes to push it down as well but I've found a dog brush works just fine!

Howard Brush online. You can buy just the cloth, or kits that include brushes as well.
never heard of rolags what on earth do you use them for?
@revivedyarns
Жыл бұрын
You spin them into yarn! I like to use the long draw technique with rolags and it creates woolen yarn- lots of air trapped between the fibers so it is light and warm.
What is the next step? I'm a total newbie!

Spinning it into yarn on a spinning wheel or spindle. Rolags are one of my favorite fiber preps.
What TPI is your board?
@revivedyarns

I thought it was 72 but I see that Howard Brush actually makes special blending board cloth and they don't say in their description! So, I'm not sure but it works great for all the fibers I've tried on it.
What on earth are they for?

Rolags are a way of preparing fiber to spin into yarn. With these, I ended up knitting a hat!
