Making Old Fashioned Lye Soap

Our interpretation of "Old Fashioned Lye Soap" is inspired by a recipe given to us from our local agriculture museum. This is a recipe rural southerners used in the 20th century and possibly late 19th century, and what many think of when they ask about old fashioned lye soap or grandma's lye soap.
The soap is complete and ready to pour into molds by the end of this video. On this day we chose to continue to cook the soap past this point to make it ready to use right away. That process will be uploaded separately.
You can find this soap as well as our other historical soaps here: www.etsy.com/shop/SwampCreekSoapworks
We post a small portion of our modern soaps on Etsy as well. Follow us on facebook or instagram @swampcreeksoapworks to see all of our bath time goodies.
Have a historical soap recipe you'd like us to make? Send it to use and we'll give it a go.

Great video. Do you use tallow or cook down a slab of lard? My family uses grease from cooking down a slab of lard to make cracklings but I've seen people use store bought lard too.
