Making of WYATT EARP: RETURN TO TOMBSTONE! Outtakes! Hugh O'Brian! A WORD ON WESTERNS

Фильм және анимация

Behind-the-Scenes & OUTTAKES! In the summer of 1994, CBS network aired the original movie, "WYATT EARP Return to Tombstone." The film brought western icon Hugh O'Brian back in his signature role of Marshall Wyatt Earp. It was the first (and still only) Earp movie ever to film on location in Tombstone, Arizona, inside the actual O.K. Corral. Hugh returned as well as actor Paul Brinegar in the role he created as the Mayor of Tombstone. Flashbacks from the original series were colorized and used throughout the movie, highlighted by the climatic shootout. Others cast in the new footage included Bruce Boxleitner, Bo Hopkins, Martin Kove, Harry Carey Jr, Don Meredith, Alex Hyde-White and Jay Underwood as a lost relative. Johnny Cash came aboard to sing the classic theme song. Scheduled to air between the theatrical releases of "Tombstone" (1993) and "Wyatt Earp" (1994), the movie won it's time period! For the VHS and Laserdisc release, "The Making of..." was made, directed by Mark Webb, and included interviews with the performers and outtakes, as well as behind-the-scenes of the colorizing process, and can be seen in this special edition of A WORD ON WESTERNS.

Thanks for posting this. I really enjoyed it. I loved Hugh O'Brian and had the honour of interviewing him once. Great series, great man Hugh, well respected for his charity work. Thanks again. I am Canadian but the US and Canada sorely needs more of the moral leadership that Hugh O'Brian and his outstanding body of film work and TV series provided in conjunction with his charity.

Hugh O’Brian was the perfect Watt Earp. I watched every episode and the theme song is forever etched in my brain. The series pops up now and then on various networks that carry the classic westerns and The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp is in my collection VHS tapes that I’ve recorded long ago. Every now and then I bring it out to enjoy the episodes and the period commercials. Thank you for the look behind the scenes of your colorization and Wyatt’s return to Tombstone. As an aside, while I was stationed in California, we made the trip to visit Tombstone, Ft Bowie and other places in that area. This was in the early 1980s. We took the long hike to Ft. Bowie with camera (back in the rolls of film days) slung around my neck. There were places in the camera strap to carry rolls of film. Somewhere along the way, all of the film I used at Tombstone were lost along that long walk. All I came home with was the roll of film in the camera containing some pics at Ft. Bowie. I do have a heavy Crystal Palace glass and a few other things, but all the photos were lost.....but I digress. Thank you, Rob for another home run in your compelling Sunday morning videos. You cover the shows that I grew up with and I just love it. Never stop, Rob, they are just so wonderful.

That’s sad. I loved Hugh O’Brien & loved him in the series Search as well. I enjoyed Return To Tombstone too & when I went to Germany in 1962 when I was 10, they were running Wyatt Earp dubbed in German but since I watched every episode I knew exactly what was happening. My Father is buried in the Hills of Eternity cemetery in Colma, Ca. where Wyatt Earp is buried. Like Hugh, he was a veteran who was in the US Army for 17 years & served in Manila, at Pearl Harbor, & the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, D Day, across Europe, the Bulge, German occupation in Bavaria where he met & married my Mother, Korea & was recalled to active duty during the Cuban Missle Crisis at the Pentagon where we were 15 minutes away from nuclear war with the Russians. RIP Hugh, Wyatt & my father.

I wasn't aware the show predated GUNSMOKE by a couple of nights. I'd always been told the latter was the first adult western and that Cheyenne (my perosnal favorite) was the first hour long adult western. I was only eight months old when Wyatt Earp aired, but by the time I was three I was watching it with my parents and siblings. My father created a simple game to entertain us that consisted of Dad playing popular TV themes on his harmonica while we tried to guess the title. I still remember singing "Wyatt Earp, Wyatt Earp, brave courageous, and bold. Long live his name and long live his glory, and long may his story be told" as Dad played the harmonica. Thanks for the memories, Rob; it looks like everyone had great fun making the retrospective movie. Have 25 years passed since then, and 64 years since the show was created? So many absent friends and familiar face.

@@Paladin1873 Like Rawhide, The Dakotas is grittier than most of the other TV oaters. It has the superb Jack Elam as the deputy who'll take on anyone and anything, any time. Elam is simply outstanding. I've been a hopeless Western and TV Western addict since the late '50s and can say without hesitation that Jack is the toughest hombre on the right side of the law in any of the scores, if not hundreds of series I've watched. The three other leads, Larry Ward, Michael Greene and Chad Everett are less impressive and most of the episodes are a little too tied to the Warner's backlot, which is a shame. Despite those drawbacks it's a series that should have run and run. What finished it was the episode called Sanctuary at Crystal Springs, which involved a shoot-out in a church. There was a viewer backlash and the studio caved in. I don't know of a link to the Three Guardsmen, who I will look into, but I do know The Dakotas was spun off from a Cheyenne episode. Massive fan as I am, I've yet to pin down the pilot episode. I'll take the 20 Dakotas episodes over all the hundreds of fake Gunsmokes and Bonanzas any day of the week and twice on Sundays. The Arness Dodge City and the Ponderosa have as much to do with the west as Toy Story. Little Joe Cartwright in his immaculate crimplene trews; Hoss taking on a bunch of - no kidding - LEPRECHAUNS! Spare us!

Hugh O'Brien was marvelous, the actors were great and the writing was the best. The final episodes......words fall short. It matched the magic of "Tombstone" and then some. What I love about all these old Westerns was the great story telling. The tales they told are about human nature and society that are still relevant today. Seeing these actors dressed in the western garb also makes them seem less dated for the time period when they were filmed. I just started watching The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp in the old reruns and this was very well done. O'Brian`s portrayal is very endearing and inspiring.

As a young boy I was a huge fan of the TV series “The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp” starring Hugh O’Brian. Little did I know or care that this popular series was primarily legend and had little to do with reality. It was made to entertain kids and in that it definitely succeeded. When as an adult I saw actual photos of Wyatt Earp and learned of his life and time as a lawman, I realized that the actor O’Brian didn’t look at all like Wyatt Earp and the series was fictional and just made to entertain.
