Making My Own Negative Rake Scraper - Iroko Handle

In this video I make my own negative rake scraper using a piece of High Speed Steel that is 6x25x200.
I grind a tang onto one end using a 6" wheel grinder before turning a handle from Iroko. Once the steel is glued into the handle I grind a curve onto the end of the blade using the wheel grinder. I then use the Robert Sorby Pro Edge to grind a 25 degree bevel on both sides and sharpen a keen edge starting with 60 grit and moving up to 120.
I hope you enjoy this video and find it instructive.

    Tool steel is often shipped in an annealed state (maximally softened). If it won’t keep an edge,take the blade out of the handle and heat it with a torch until it no longer will stick to a magnet. Then plunge in old motor oil. When it cools down wipe off the oil and put the blade in your kitchen oven at 425 F for three hours. That will give you a properly hardened and tempered blade. If you grind it keep dipping the blade in cool water to avoid re softening the blade. I recently heat treated a bowl gouge I made of 0-1 tool steel and I am quite pleased with it. Frank

    I think I'd have left the tang square/rectangular in section which would give it greater resistance to torsional/twisting forces. Nice job on the handle!

    I agree that tang looked a bit sketchy. You might get away with it on a neg rake scraper, where the forces are lower, but why take the chance.

    Really inspirational -- you made that look so simple. I'm going to give it a shot. One additional thing -- it's incredible that I searched amazon for those same dimensions of bar stock and found that the 5 dollar price you quoted from 2018 has ballooned into about 10 dollars. Absolutely insane. Soul crushing this amount of inflation man. Anyway...

    Edwin Leach be aware that files can be very brittle. The tang end should not be as hard and thus less liable to break. But do be aware of the possibility that a catch might snap the thing.

    Excellent result. I was skeptical about grinding out all that HS steel for the tang. I'm sure it warmed up a bit, but came out great. I don't have a belt grinder but it seemed to work so well for the bevel, I wonder if you could have used it for the tang too. Thanks for sharing.

    Nicely done the only things I would have done differently would be to pause and dip in cool water while grinding to prevent heating the steel to a blue colour Cut the tang with angle grinder with a cut off disk Drill the tang hole about 6 mm deeper Fix the blade to the handle with epoxy and leave a coat of epoxy on the end to enclose the end of handle and seal around the tang I would strike a Dimple in the side of the ferrel with centre punch and chamfer the edge of the ferrel slightly A very handsome.scraper that should serve you for years

    To save yourself all the tedious grinding away of the tang get a thin cutoff wheel for an angle grinder. It would be done in a minute or so. Like one of the other commentors - I'd also be concerned about the small size of the tang. Most scrapers I've seen and used have a wider tang than this. Yes, a bad catch is usually down to incorrect tool use but accidents do sometimes happen

  • @NathanCummingWoodturning

    @NathanCummingWoodturning

    6 жыл бұрын

    I don’t have an angle grinder unfortunately or I could have done that, but the grinder didn’t take all that long either. I originally was going to keep the tang wider than it was thick but when I looked at the tools I already have their tangs all taper to round for going into the handle. I’ll be testing it soon and if any issues do arise from it I’ll be sure to mention them for people to be aware of. Provided I don’t have a catastrophic catch I’m confident it will be ok, I haven’t had one yet, touch wood.

    Is that more of a skew grind? I though the nr scraper had different angles, not matching.

  • @NathanCummingWoodturning

    @NathanCummingWoodturning

    6 жыл бұрын

    David Shaper As long as the included angle is between 40 and 70 degrees it will function as a negative rake scraper. I ground both bevels at 25 degrees so the included angle is 50 degrees. Having the angle equal on both sides means I can easily grind it to have the burr on either side depending on how I want to use it for finishing either the inside or outside of a bowl. I could also sharpen and remove the burr on a strop and use it as a skew for spindle work, making it a much more versatile tool. You could also grind opposing angles as long as the total angle is between 40 and 70 degrees, it depends on what you plan to use it for. Hope that answers your question, thanks for watching and commenting.

    its hard to tell in the video as it's sped up but I was careful not to apply too much pressure and not remove too much material at once. I would pause to allow the metal to cool and occasionally dip it in water to be sure that it wouldn't overheat.

    HSS is not like carbon steel, it would need to start turnin red to draw the hardness out. Ya also don't dunk it in water, it can cause micro cracks in the structure of the steel.

    That is not strictly true, see here: www.totalmateria.com/page.aspx?ID=CheckArticle&site=kts&LN=CN&NM=57. However for general use you will be sharpening a bit more frequently. To be honest if I were making such a blade I would bother either!

  • @neil1150

    Why did you make the tang so thin, it is now a very weak point, one catch and that will be it done ? Would have been far better to have cut the tang with a hacksaw or bandsaw so it stays cold, and unstressed, a taper from about 8mm to 15mm would be far stronger. Good luck with it and please stay safe.

  • @NathanCummingWoodturning

    @NathanCummingWoodturning

    6 жыл бұрын

    the thickness of the bar is 6mm so I reduced the tang to be 6mm round so it would fit securely in a 6mm hole drilled into the wood, It's no smaller than the tangs on my other turning tools. There is never much chance of a serious catch with a standard scraper, much less a negative rake scraper, if there is a bad catch it would be down to incorrect use of the tool. It would have taken hours of tedious labour to cut it with a hacksaw, it made sense to use a grinder and quench the metal frequently to retain the temper (the bowl of water for quenching is out of shot in the video.). That's how tools are manufactured and sharpened anyway. Thanks for watching and for your comment.

    Looking at the colour of the sparks I would question if the material is HSS, generally HHS gives off a much darker spark?
