Making music for TV shows

Музыка

Composing soundtracks for Scandinavian crime dramas and "Nordic Noir" TV shows like Wallander, The Bridge, Bron.
We will use just a single VST plugin U-HE DIVA with a sound library NORDSUND made by my favourite sound designer The Unfinished (Matt Bowdler).
This guy knows his stuff, having done the sound design for seasons of The Bridge as well as collaborating on Hollywood movies with the likes of Hans Zimmer.

I've been a graphic designer for press, web, video, signage for 40+ years. You have to have a thick skin to take the continual criticism of not quite hitting the mark that pleases your client. Pleasing the client is how you sell design work, even when I think it is not good advertising. Some of the work I have done I wouldn't admit to because the client wanted a change that I thought was horrendous. As a musician I don't want anything to do with the film industry, too much like graphic design. I would guess film scoring to be much like my business. For some rare moments in the film the music is out front and leading the film, but most the time the music is supporting the film. Music without pleasing clients is the most freedom I have ever had in life, a precious freedom I cherish.

Commendable effort. Very good patches. I’ve bought quite a few albums with movie soundtracks. My favorites are The Rock by Hans Zimmer, Under Siege by Gary Chang, and Bill Brown’s soundtrack for the Rainbow Six video-games. Extremely creative music that lives on independently from the movie. Also, Paul Hertzog’s music for a couple of movies with JCVD, like Bloodsport, and The Big Blue by Eric Serra are guilty pleasures. 😊

Ever tried playing piano live over a silent film soundtrack like they used to do in the movie theaters for old silent films? A lost art?

Hi Woody - how about a follow-up video where you use these sounds within a DAW and synchronise to video? Challenges including time-stretching, how to deal with dialogue, recurring motifs etc - could be a whole series! Best wishes.

that would be very interesting indeed... a couple of challenges though, where to get the copyright-free footage, and that's a lot of work to do for just an exercise, without it ever getting used for real!

@@WoodyPianoShack You live in a nice part of the world - perhaps shoot some contrasting footage (gentle pan shots/handheld running sequence/approaching car etc) - would get over the copyright issue. Take your point re investment of time:gain though. You’d probably get a lot of views.

@@strongchord4384 well this video flopped so not sure I would want to create a film, a soundtrack and a video all about it, just for that to fail as well! but i do appreciate the suggestion and it has occurred to me before.

Great work, but I wouldn't say that 99% are the presets since the composition/score is what will elevate or sink the movie/series/computergame, so the ability to find the right presets as also to find the right melodies is what makes a great score composer.

  • @WoodyPianoShack

yeah, that's probably true, but a lot of Matt's presets include a little arp/step sequencer, and that can be used as the hook/melody just by holding down one note

Well done, Woody! Maybe add one or two more tracks to the songs, with a few interesting noises here and there? Reminds me a lot of the soundtrack of the (good) series "War of the Worlds", 2019 (not the older Tom Cruise movie). Main theme is called "In Between Worlds" by David Martijn. Can be easily found here on YT. It also has that kind of distortion in some sounds. And everything reminds me of the song "Europa Hymn" by Martin Gore.
