Making leather belt - blacksmithing
Forging a belt buckle and cutting a leather belt. No power tools. Open the full video description for more information.
A alternative buckle design.
---------------------------
Materials: Mild steel, cow leather, pine tar and fish oil.
---------------------------
This was the first time I made a belt design like this and need to use it some more before starting to consider improving it - though would I personally in case of a next time consider attaching the buckle with needle and cord or riveting it on instead of cutting into the belt itself and avoid that relative "weak spot".
---------------------------
A few quick questions:
1. What did you add to the steel and leather?
50/50 mixture of pine tar and fish oil/fat. Apples it a few times on the relative hot steel to get the black color and a rust protecting layer. Add it to the leather a few times and let it dry a few hours in between to make it softer and more water resistent.
2. First time I see you use this set up... Is the shop permanent?
No - it is just a temporary set up. I will use it for about two months before moving it to a new location.
3. Why stone on the bellow?
It is a way to adjust the air flow. The more weight/stones you add the more air the forge get.
4. Do you sell?
No.
5. Where did you get the bellow?
Old one I bought in Denmark a few weeks ago and restored (new leather and valves). About 130 years old.
6. Why not make the common buckle design?
No specific reason - I have just wanted for a while to give this alternative design a try.
7. I want to try making one... do you have some advice?
Yes. 1. Make the hook relative long. 2. Make the gab in the hook conical so the leather get jammed tighter and tighter the more you pull in the belt..... If you don't get those two points right will the belt way too easy be able to open random on it's own and be useless as a functional belt. 3. forge thin and small.

I always make my own belts but I have never made a buckle, the system on yours is something I have never seen. Simple but very decorative and functional.

Always a pleasure to watch these videos. Calm, unhurried, educational needing no narration. Long may they continue, Rune.
This really is the perfect channel for me to watch I mean there is being in the wild, building and blacksmithing
I admire anything you do. Behind the camera and infront.
ok so the video just starts with Rune blowing the biggest blower ever into his forge made of stone in the middle of the snowy forest while smiling happily, I mean that is the most viking thing I have seen for a while :D

Thank you for helping to bring these ancient and essential skills back into the world.
Even though I do not do any blacksmithing and know nothing about what you do, I find it absolutely fascinating how much of a skilled craftsman you are! I just love see how you use your knowledge and skills to created something useful, from a raw source. AND you don't say a word!!! Great work my friend, and THANK you!
The unfoldment of Your craftsman ship is in a league of its own.
A joy to see a craftsman producing practical and beautiful pieces. Especially impressive in the conditions. Thank you.
You make great videos and I hope to watch these videos for many years, please if you have filmed for many years such videos because I enjoy.Paul-Slovakia
Nice work! Regards from Argentina
Nice to see a video with a blacksmith work again. No matter if it's bushcrafting or forging you have both perfectly under control. Happy to the next video.
Everything you do is magical. Beautiful belt!!!!
Very impressed by the idea of outdoor blacksmithing *in snow*! It must be comfortable working in that condition with the hotness coming from steel. It might even be more productive than doing this in a room.
It's a real pleasure to watch you work Rune. Thank you for not having loud music playing, the sound of the bellows and hammer on steel is music enough. Well done.

As always I love your videos. The best part of this one to me is the fact of only using a few tools to create something so intricate yet functional and refined. You sir, have my admiration.
Now that's some bushcraft blacksmithing! Minimal equipment and maximal functionality! My favorite bushcraft channel right now, keep up the great work Bertram!

I just watched this video. Not sure how I missed it. An absolutely beautiful belt. A work of art actually...priceless. I'm sure this will last forever.
Wholesome and satisfying to watch. That said, I just go to TK Maxx or something when I need a belt. I'd love to try and make my own one though. That'd be the best belt ever I'm sure. Overall rating 10/10. Length of footage 6/10 Cinematography 14/10 Snow 10/10 Half smile 11/10 Self sufficiency 12/10 Me typing on the interwebs -4.6/10 Great footage. Thanks for taking the time to share your skills and efforts.
Rune, what do you do differently when forging out in cold temperatures? The anvil itself must partially quench the working piece, I'm sure cracks and such must happen more easily? As always, you make it seem so easy! Thanks for showing and sharing.
@BertramCraftAndWilderness

Thanks. I basically just do the same as always - look at the color on the steel and heat it whenever the color tells me it is too cold. Small anvils like this does quickly heat up, though a good idea to preheat it before you start forging. But yes - nether the less does the cold defiantly make you need to heat up the steel a lot more frequently or yes it will crack.
Bonne suite.

Beautiful beautiful double chambered bellows. Best working ones that I have seen until now on YT. And it is really refreshing and inspiring to see someone as skilled as yourself doing majority of work on simple, non-horn anvil :) Thank you for great inspiration!
What an awesome, yet simple and effective belt. I love it!
I tried making a leather belt blacksmithing but the belt was too hard to hold with the tongs.
