I appreciate that you were really respectful about the whole spaghetti part lol It's been my comfort food even well into my adulthood Fun fact: the reason why Filipino spaghetti is sweet is because in WWII there was a tomato shortage in the Philippines, so they substituted tomato-based products with a banana sauce consisting of mashed bananas, vinegar, spices, and red dye.

So, as an American that has spent roughly 3 years in the Philippines, sweet spaghetti is definitely something we have to get used to. It’s not bad, it’s just different. I was taken aback the first time, but as time went on, I grew to enjoy it. The fried chicken stomps all other places though. And he didn’t even get the mango peach pie or the pancit palabok! I can't honestly blame non-Filipinos for not liking Filipino Spaghetti. It's really an acquired taste. Honestly, I wouldn't even mind if Joshua said that he hated it because I understand why; but he really went out of his way to be extra respectful with it and I respect that. For non-Filipinos who might be wondering how one can like the absurdity of a very sweet spaghetti, just think of having it as your introduction to spaghetti as a kid without knowing about the traditional style. I bet that you'll love it as well. I even think that most Filipinos haven't had a taste of the traditional spaghetti and I guarantee you as well that most of them won't like it when they try it. It's also not like we like everything to be extra sweet over here, it's just a culture thing. That's all that there is to it.

I’m not Filipino but I’ve always preferred a sweeter spaghetti sauce so I was really intrigued when I first heard of Jollibee’s and the concept of Filipino spaghetti. No Jollibee’s near me sadly, but I read about it and watched some videos. I bought containers of something called I think sweet Filipino spaghetti sauce and even ordered banana ketchup online! I finally got to make it and I LOVE it. Definitely different from an Italian type of sauce - which I also love - but I think it’s fantastic. I can’t believe I never heard of it until recently. Love the uniqueness and how dear it is to people.

Papa JW, one thing you need to know is that in the Philippines, the sauce we put in our spaghetti contains Banana Catsup. This is what gives it the sweet, tangy flavour, hence we don't need to add a lot of sugar to it. Also, some Filipino Mums add milk powder or evaporated milk in their sauces, hence adding another dimension to it. It's great you tried, and yes, hats off to you bud. As an apprentice chef, I understand your aversion to not making it in the traditional italian pomodoro/napoli sauce, but thank you for still trying. Jollibee is a childhood staple and classic.

As I'd read the comments, Filipino style spaghetti is an unorthodox style, but we way like our pasta that way. Kudos for that. As for your approach to our fried breaded chicken, it's a culinary upgrade if Jollibee would consider. Not to mention, he asked a Filipino to rate both meals, and staying true to his Filipino roots. Overall, it's nice that "for the first time in your BUT BETTER series" your team came up with a stalemate, against your restaurants in the US.

Yup, that’s definitely the typical reaction a non-Filipino has to Filipino style spaghetti. It’s probably pretty weird to taste something that’s usually savory be sweet in another culture or recipe. Kinda like my experience with avocados. I like them accompanied with chips and in sandwiches, but not much as a ice cream or dessert flavor. And I’ve always preferred the texture of the fried chicken from Jollibee than KFC. I like the seasoning on KFC a bit more, but not the biggest fan of them not doing so well at making their breading crispy most of the time. And the Jollibee near your place doesn’t do chicken breasts? I guess that’s a foreign Jollibee thing, as last time I’ve been there they still do Chicken Joy breasts.

I had a similar reaction the first time wife (filipina) made her version of Jollibee's spaghetti. I liked it, but it was weird and different. She perfected her recipie and now over 10 years later, her spaghetti that she just calls, "Filipino Spaghetti" is the only spaghetti I will eat. Of course she still thinks Jollibee is better but I think that has more to do with childhood nostalgia than anything else.

Some history with our spaghetti, when we were introduced to it and ketchup, tomatoes weren't readily available back then in the Philippines but we had abundance of bananas. With this we made banana ketchup to replace our tomato ketchup that wasn't available. So it naturally has a sweet flavor from the bananas and dyed it red to look like tomatoe ketchup.. Then we started using it to replace tomatoes in other dishes like spaghetti, that is why its sweet. Hope that helps you understand why it's sweet

Filipinos barely had enough tomatoes to make sauce for spaghetti or pasta back in Post-WW2. So, in a brilliant moment of desperation, They used bananas as a substitute. That’s why it ended up being so sweet. Okay. Don’t @ me but *tomato sauces are gross.*

Sweet spaghetti is absolute garbage, and I'm surprised foreigners can even stand eating our own spaghetti. Like, tbh hotdogs are a fine substitute for meatballs, and cheese isn't often standard, but it works, but the sauce... The spaghetti sauce we use is atrocious. Every birthday party, every restaurant both fast food and high class, sweet spaghetti is served and it does not mesh well at all, especially when paired with all the other food you may be eating with it. Standard Spaghetti being sweet and sour provides a perfect mix that makes eating the dish delectable and overall a pleasant experience, especially if you add more to it like basil, oregano, a lot of different greens to add to it. Specially made meatballs make some beautiful spaghetti dishes that are incredibly filling and incredibly delicious. My whole family and I have tried doing anything to change the taste of Filipino styled Spaghetti, it hasn't changed shit. The sweetness of Filipino spaghetti overpowers anything you put into it. I would have to spend more than necessary just to make the spaghetti more balanced, and at that point, I should have just made regular spaghetti. Eating Filipino Spaghetti is like eating sugar, it's super fucking sweet. I would not be surprised if the leading cause of diabetes in the Philippines can be linked to people who consume Filipino Styled Spaghetti.

I agree about Church's biscuits. Once upon a time Popeyes biscuits reigned supreme. They were once buttery and fluffy. Now, I call them murder biscuits. If you don't have something to drink, you could choke because they are so dry.

Jollibee will forever be a "W" but the support and effort Joshua gave us to show also how others can cook this at home are another "W". Jollibee is more than a food place, it is part of our culture. I am happy to see other people be inspired and have a taste of home from the dishes created by the motherland. Umaasa ako na lumikha siya ng higit pang mga lutuing Filipino o Asyano sa hinaharap na malalim ang tungkol sa lasa at ipakita sa amin ang kanyang sariling mga lutong bahay para sa kabanatang iyon.

don't worry about it Josh! 8 times out of 10, non-Filipinos are not entirely huge fans of the spaghetti, and as a Filipino myself, I understand why. Our spaghetti is a tad bit too sweet compared to other spaghetti but we Filipinos just got used to it that way, literally all our "savory" food here is sweet XD.
