I live in a place where charcoal is not needed for cooking. But on our farm we use large kilns to make charcoal for biochar. We add our crushed charcoal to the compost, and then to our gardens to increase the fertility of the soil. We use pruingings and "waste" wood that would otherwise become a fire hazard to improve our soils. Your two barrel system is simple, and will make large amounts of charcoal, both for cooking and for soil improvement. Thank you for sharing your idea.

So going by your theory, you should not wash fruits and vegetables so tht you don't kill the microbes, or you shouldn't even take dewormers, medicines, or bathe yourself 'cause you'll kill the microbes with soap. So what's up???

I made many more holes in the bottom but the burn went too fast, 3/4 hour, and when I opened it there was almost no charcoal - it had all burned up. This time I will reduce the gap at the bottom to 1 inch. The bamboo I used was 3 inch diameter, but this time I will go 1-2 inches as you did. Will let you know the results.
