Hi again! I’ve been looking at this tutorial every day lately and now I would feel confident in making it; I was a little afraid , at first, of messing with the glue. Thanks a lot for showing us the whole process and then speed up,the footage instead of making parts of it off camera. As a visual person, it helps me to see the whole thing. And as usual, you’re always so well prepared , you make it easy for us to go ahead and do it. Have a great day! 🌺🌸

Using a clapper when pressing the Prairie Points aids in getting the "fluffiness" of the fabric under control so that the Prairie Point will lay flat. I use a clear sole #34 foot. This holds the fabric down as I sew, but many do prefer the open toe foot. These hot pads and the larger Table Topper by Debra Miller are so fun to make. Experiment with colors and patterns to vary the final look.

2 tips to make this sew much easier. When stitching the layers down, place a piece of water soluble stabilizer (clear plastic type) over the piece. Stitch with mono from edge to center. Stop. Turn 180 and stitch from edge to center. You will not be fighting with the folds if you do this and will be able to complete the project faster and easier!!!! Tear off the stabilizer and spritz with water at the end.

Fantastic Video! When you are using your own fabrics, remember to wash, dry, and iron your fabrics on HOT, if you are going to wash them often, which you will if you use these often as hot pads, and not as decorative hangings. Buy a little extra fabric to allow for shrinkage!

This is the Amish folded star. You can make your own template. Get a piece of freezer paper...print the template on the dull (paper) side. Flip it over to the plastic side...where you can easily see the template. Use glue stick to go hold down square...freezer paper will peel off as needed or you can see straight through it. Wonderful stuff.

I'm more of a needle arts person than a craft person. I didn't want to use glue or invisible thread. Instead of using glue I pinned the outside points of each prairie point. I sewed down the middle of each point and then a circle around the bottom of the points on each round with matching thread instead of the invisible thread. When I tried to attach the binding both my Viking and my Babylock skipped stitches badly. My sewing machine repairman suggested using a larger needle. I used a 90 or 100 needle for sewing the points and an Organ 110/18 needle to attach the binding. I I got the Organ 110/18 needles on Amazon. Problem solved! Its a good thing because I made 12 hot pads for Christmas and Hanukkah gifts.

We're happy you enjoy this tutorial. We think that a Thread Director is not necessary for the mono-poly, since it is a "round" thread. The Thread Directors are more necessary when working with "flat" threads like the holographic metallic threads. Hope that makes sense! 💖 -Michelle

Just take a piece of foundation fabric 10 inches square. Iron it horizontally both ways and diagonal too. Then you don’t have to buy the pre printed patterns.
Ok I need to make all of these! If actually using as a hot pad would you use insulbright? I am moving soon and should make some Christmas gifts before I pack my sewing room till I don’t have one for an indefinite time. People I would gift to would use them as hot pads and not decor. I can’t imagine regular batting would work for my baker friends. Or would you layer insul bright and batting? I’ve only ever used it in mug rugs.
@ShabbyFabrics
4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thank you for watching! The star is built with 4 layers of folded triangles plus batting, making it thick enough to protect a surface from a hot plate. The pattern does not call for insul-bright so we have not made them with it, however, we would love to hear how it works out for you should you choose to try it! Stay safe and happy sewing! ~Leah

Couple of questions... Are you keeping the dog-feed down while sewing... and is that a quilter’s walking presser foot? I have a question about the wool pad you iron on: if you leave that wool pad on a table or your cutting board and you are ironing and steaming, will that cause a discoloration or marking or warping on your wood table top? or warp your cutting board? No one that uses those pads has ever mentioned that to my knowledge.

Hi Emilia- You can find these measurements on the pattern, here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/p82678. -Michelle
Is there any reason why, when placing each layer of fabric, that you have to go in a circle rather than across (like you do when making the ornaments)?

We prefer this method for creating the hot pads so that we can ensure that all of our points and lines are lined up correctly. You can choose to layer these however you choose. 😍 -Michelle
Love your tutorials. Question: what brand iron do you use?

Great tip! - Yajaira
could you take the template and copy it on to an iron-on interfacing and then you don"t have to use glue?

That sounds like a good idea! You can find the template packs here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/8-folded-star-hot-pad-interfacing-template-refills-3pk-P85360.aspx - Morgan
I copy the pattern in my printer using tracing paper. works great and I don"t have to buy the pattern again.

If anyone has made these in the past few months, have you used cotton blending thread? I’m thinking that if someone is using them as hot pads or trivets or washing and drying, the invisible thread might get too hot?

Hello! Yes, you can most certainly try the cotton thread! We would love to see it once it is done! - Yajaira
Its so gorgeous ❤️🙏 Wouldn't it be helpful for me if i glued all 3 corners not on the first one of course, but the rest

I'm getting back into sewing and is this fairly easy for a beginner to moderate sewer?

I always end up with one star point a little bigger, or longer on every potholder, even being super carful on placement
