In High School, I used to work developing film. Disposable cameras wind the film back into the case but needed cracked open to remove the canister to develop. We would crack them open, remove the film, then charge the flash and toss the bare camera to someone else. Instinct always made you reach and catch it, getting a nice jolt.

Back in highschool, our shop teacher decided it'd be a great idea to give us a box of these cameras and get us to dismantle them. Suffice to say we shortly figured out their use as tasers. Even going so far as to solder extra capacitors in to the boards. They also made handy spot welders for thin copper wire.

i had about 20 9 volt batteries i would link together and then connect the wires with some needle nose pliers and an exposed chunk of graphite on a pencil (rubber and wood outsides for safety) and the flash would always burn my eyes, it wasn't until later i figured out i was welding pencil graphite to my pliers' metal nose

I wish i had known what a capacitor was 20 yrs ago when a 10yr old boy was tinkering around with one and grabbed the capacitor and twisted (connecting the wires). The shock was so hard my fingers seriously felt broken and hurt for the whole day. An experience I have never and will never forget.

Or if you have some damage/illness of the heart. Same Reason why there are deaths when tazzered. That is also the problem if tazzers are marketed as a nonlethal alternative to guns and therefore used more often.

On relatively weak tasers bought at Walmart, it feels kinda like extremely fast vibration on a part of your skin, on a police grade taser gun it feels like your entire body goes into paralysis for a couple seconds (which is pretty much does)

I have already opened a disposable camera and played with it, and well... guess what... I touch the fucking metal shit on it by accident when it hadn't discharged yet and it hurt like a fucking 1.2 inch wide needle going in my body and my blood stream, and it hurt for about 25 minutes... Man I'm dumb sometimes

It's completely possible for this to be lethal. It all depends on the path that the current takes,skin resistance,contact points,etc. As a localized shock to your forearm,it's probably fairly safe. What you don't want,is for the path to go across your heart,like say,a shock from one hand,up your arm,through your chest (across your heart) and back down the other arm. Those capacitors can be charged to over 300Vdc,and can deliver a fairly high current peak. Use the 'one hand rule' when tinkering,and you should be mostly okay.

As a young adult, in the late '80s, I worked at a photolab. That's where I learned the joys of shocking your friends with disposable cameras. I was visiting my dad and he had a disposable camera for me to take to work with me. I showed him how to expose the contacts coming from the capacitor. First, I was amazed that he wanted me to shock him a second time. A short time later, my little sister came home, he called her over and shocked the crap out of her, without warning. And lastly, the evening ended with my sister and I trying to explain why this was assault and he should never do this to someone without warning.

Found out I don’t have insulated screw drivers.

Funny thing is, I discovered this before even watching this vid... Had an old disposable camera that ran outta film a few years back... Messed with it a bit (fully intact), and kinda thought to myself "If I can hear it charging, that must be a crap-ton of power..." Eventually managed to take it apart, and futz with it a bit... At first, learned of a contact that would close the circuit to the flash, because the flash wouldn't trigger after the film ran out, and the "take photo" button became useless... That was kinda fun for a while... Then I learned about the same thing you guys did... Never got around to actually doing the screws or nothin', just that I could short out the capacitor with a screwdriver. (On a side note, I'mna look up WHY the cameras make that high-pitch noise when charging... Parts vibrating, or what?)

The noise is because of the high frequency pumping transistor that takes the DC from the battery and switches it on and off very fast into a transformer where you need either AC current or pulsed DC to create the fast collapsing magnetic flux in the transformer core to boost the voltage. Once it's boosted it gets stored in a big capacitor . Once you press the snap button BAM. So that's simplified a bit but you get it. It's a hardcore shocker!

It can't be lethal, but it sure does hurt a fucking lot, I'll tell you that.

with the electrodes close together it's "relatively" safe. the current only flows between them, and doesnt penetrate much. (the reason why tazers make people cramp up fall over, and stun guns usually dont) but keep in mind that this is a potent DC shock of ~300V, not unlike defibrilator. that can indeed be very dangerous, if it flows through the body. (say from one hand to the other)

I actually used the flash circuit and some buttons, wire, and solder to make a flash gun. Essentially I hot glued it to a plastic gun and put a trigger on it. It's a reusable flashbang gun. In the process of making it/while using it I shocked myself 5 different times in 4 different places on the circuit board, promptly coating the leads with hot glue after each shock. I still found a new place to accidentally shock myself.

On my 6th grade week long class field trip me and all my idiot friends did this. We just basically ripped the camera apart and shocked each other all week. God we were so dumb back then...

How did I miss this the first time. Glad that this has its own channel now.

KrazeeCain I know this is old as hell now, but disposable cameras like this are now commonly used in long haul trucks to take pics of an accident. Most will have one or two in the glove box. Disposable cameras don't exactly corrupt, nor can the photos be easily edited, and are cheaper than a digital camera... Spend $30 on a camera and probably never use it, or spend $7 on a camera and probably never use it.

I worked on an old tube radio, replacing its power unit and for that reason I had to build and install a new capacitor bank. The original capacitors were still good but me and my coworker decided to only use them for testing purposes, as they had started to become dry. The capacitors had to be installed on the Mains side of the power unit, were the voltage is high, we're talking 400V here. For testing purposes we attaced the new bank designs prototype, complete with the old capacitors into the new power unit, plugged it in and started our measurments, seeing if everything worked just fine, despite the fact that the old capacitors were a little less then optimal. To our surprise, the capacitors were performing much better then we expected. Too good for me infact. Clumsy me, trying to measure something near the Power Unit (I actualky don't remember much from the actualy incident XD), bridged one of the capacitors with one of my hands. Just one. Wasn't so bad, if you let out the fact my hand yanked back on its own and I could not feel it for 15 minutes flat. I am just glad I really just bridged a capacitor, since they don't put out much amps, I could have done more damage to my hand then having a numb hand for 15 minutes.

When I was in my teens, I was taking apart a disposable camera. Long before this was even known about them. And the top part of my middle finger pad touched something and gave me the WORSTTTT shock of my life!

I discovered this trick when I was eight years old...I was taking a part One of these disposable cameras and Messing around with the flash when I accidentally touched the capacitor.... It gave me a shock that I will never forget it's actually worse than a store-bought stun gun because of all the current... Store-bought stunguns are usually 50,000 v or 100,000 v it can be higher or lower depending on which model you buy but the current is very low it's in the Ma range.... Which by no means is comfortable but not dangerous...but the disposable camera flash circuit charges that capacitor to 330 V at a much higher current.... It's enough to spot weld wires and Blow holes in a pop can when discharged.... After that I started to collect all of the capacitors that I could get from these flash units and wind my own high-voltage transformer's to make a souped-up version I connected the capacitors in series and parallel so I could raise the voltage to 1000v and increase the overall capacitance.... It was a fun little project that worked very well.... I would definitely recommend trying this if you're interested in electronics just be careful and don't forget to incorporate a blead resistor across the terminals of the capacitor bank so you don't accidentally leave the capacitors fully charged when not in use....

Hey if anyone is interested in how the camera even achieves a spark like that, you may notice the coil of wire on the camera circuit in the beginning of the video. This is actually a small transformer that will produce a much higher voltage when AC passes through it. Since the battery outputs DC and the capacitor charges it as well, the rest of the flashing circuit is a DC to AC converter and then an AC to DC converter. The former will between the battery and transformer and the latter will be between the output coil of the transformer and the capacitor. If you want your taser to charge faster you may try replacing the current capacitor on the board with one of a slightly smaller capacity. This way the cap will reach full voltage faster!

In grade 9 science for physics, we had a Van de Graffe generator (or at least I think that's what it was called) that worked with a rubber band and we all stood on chairs holding hands. The person at the start put their hand on the generator and I (being at the end) was told to touch the ceiling where there were little metal beams running across. You can all guess what happened next and it wasn't comfortable. Before this run though the guy at the start had too little padding on the bottom of his shoes and his foot was on one of the bolts so that was a fun day.

I remember when i was a kid, and i used to disassemble old tech gadgets to salvage motors and components. Once i found an old camera, and i had no idea what a capacitor was. It was a huge mistake, i discharged it with my fingers. It left holes on my skin. I can still feel the pain everytime i see a capacitor. Ouch.

I want my new ringtone to be one of Brian's signature strings of bleeped curse words.

I love this, I was taught how to do this by pulling out the capacitor and using that.

One of my dads friends made a rail gun out of disposable cameras and didnt expect it to be powerful. It went through several walls (pretty sure cinder block but may be drywall) nearly hitting someone and he was kicked out of his college.

Im an electrician and have been hit by 277 volts. Did have a coworker attempt to discharge static from 4160v with a piece of wire, well one the knives didn't disengage on the breaker and when he hit the lead he caused a direct short and blew the wire up in his hand. Somehow he lived with only minor burns to his arm from the arc flash.

this was what got me into electronics. i was tearing apart a hand me down broken camera my grandmother threw away, and after i got the back cover off, i went to remove the front, and i somehow(?) grabbed a part of the flash apparatus and shocked the shit out of myself, i was 13 at the time and didn't know much about electronics other than basic logic gates and some binary (family got me a boring ass book about electric theory because my grandfather was an electrician and never had the opportunity to learn the complex stuff, so he wanted me to be prepared for the new world), and i was like 'woah holy shit, that hurt like hell, i wanna try it again' and it made me really want to dive in further so i could build a death ray to destroy me enemies for stealing my trading cards (or something stupid like that) now i'm 21 and i build/fix computers for a living

I remember half figuring out how to do this as a kid and zapping bugs with a smashed up half dismantled disposable camera. Fun times that's how I learned what being shocked really feels like.

This is so funny to see. Around 1999 in Boy Scouts we found this out on a winter camping trip. We were shocking the shit out of each other. Hurts pretty bad, at least from what I can remember.

When people say it can be lethal, they're referring to the fact that if you have heart problems or a pacemaker and get shocked close to the heart, it's possible for it to stop your heart. Still not likely at all, but not impossible.

The voltage saftey limit for VDC is 50v but what you should be worried about is amperage if thats higher than .1 its can be dangerous. The tolerance varies from person to person

It would be interesting to take it to extremes. A charged capacitor can be dangerous, but just how dangerous. How large of a capacitor could you get your hands on?

I remember I took one of these apart and I got really pissed off because I forgot that the capacitor was charged and I got a really bad shock, so I discharged it with a screwdriver but it was a big a capacitor than here so the people in the Next Room freaked out.

When I was 12, I found a old camera and played with the cap, blowing stuff up. At one point I wondered how badly it would hurt and it was even worse than 230V AC from the wall. It was a 330V 100µF Cap.

Btw for people who's new in the "tazing area": Sure, the electric discharge comes out a good far inches/cm in your arm but it doesn't reach all the way to the heart as they say in this video, it's your nerves that are so stressed out by the surprising shock that it tricks the brain into thinking the electricity sent all the way through your body. So don't worry if you're making these, you have nothing to worry about unless you use some kind of a pacemaker because if so...

You can also make a coil gun with the capacitors and charging circuit.

Get a another capacitor from a different camera and place that capacitor in parallel with your tazer's capacitor for double the strength. I used to do this when I had my own tazer camera. I went up to three capacitor. Note it takes twice as long to charge with two capacitors.

Would this actually deter an attacker? What is the charging time after a full discharge until it's fully ready again? (Can't believe you didn't include that info in the video because it seems really important in determining if this is worth it or not. Also, is it possible to upgrade this with a bigger capacitor or higher output battery? Thanks!
