    If you ever want to make sure they stay pointed outwards, use a U shape wire to bind the wings together in the middle

    This is such a great idea! I'm going to use this idea as the basis to make a pair of insect fly wings. I'm dressing as the 1950s Fly for Halloween. I liked the idea of sandwiching the wire and adhering the cellophane to each other. I didn't know how to keep the two layers from shifting or how to keep them together prior to heating. Thank you!

    @@JudysRevenge It may, I haven't tried it yet. I found flattened wire at a craft store and it felt very strong to me, but sadly won't bend the right way to do what I need it to do. I learn by experimenting haha so I may test it with flattened wire, but may not work. And I've tried soldering, but I don't think I was doing it correctly as it wouldn't stick. Now I just use my soldering iron for putting details into foam haha. But thank you so much for the tips!

    Beautiful and what sweet comments you make to us as subscribers/visitors. Question: Have you tried soldering the wire? I think I may look into that, as I just don't know how well tape holds up on wire. Also, who the heck out here can airbrush - won't spray paint do just as well? Is airbrushing hard to learn? Thanks for sharing. Big fan from Florida.

    Thank you so much!! And you could definitely solder the wire. I'm not skilled in that though, only electronic soldering which I'm still very new to lol, so sadly I have no advice for that. Another KZreadr by the name of Yvonne Williams @ Back To Earth creations does a lot more wire work, so I definitely recommend her for that! The tape has held up really well surprisingly, I still have the wings and I've worn them several times! Including to Ren Faires ☺️ And spray paint should work, definitely test it first on some spare cellophane! ☺️ Airbrushing can be complicated at first, and you have to make sure to clean every little piece thoroughly or else you'll spend quite a bit trying to figure out where a clog is lol. I love using it to add some shading or highlighting to armor pieces, it's much easier than trying to blend acrylics, I never got that down right! I do recommend it though, I learned how to airbrush from various KZread videos! ☺️

    You should make a video of how to make sturdier wings for ren fairs. I am a fairy at the Renaissance Festival of Nebraska, and I have made 2 pairs of wings, but they still haven't turned out great. My first pair, the U frame wasn't heavier than the wings themselves, so I had to put an extra wire in, and now I can't wear them because that extra wire shows. My other pair is very fragile and has many holes after only 3 weekends of fair. I know it has been a year since you posted this video, but if you could reply back to help me and give me advice, I would LOVE that! Thank you!

  • @ForgingSmores

    @ForgingSmores

    4 жыл бұрын

    I wrapped my U frame in duct tape to thicken it up and make it a bit stronger, try adding tape or ribbon to cover the wire, if it's exposed on the wings you could use clear tape to tape it down! Unfortunately, I haven't had the time to experiment more with wings but I REALLY want to make a sturdy pair because mine also got a hole or two the last time I wore them to a faire. I kinda just embraced it by heating it up and expanding the hole a bit to make it look worn. I made another set of wings this year way smaller than these and dragon wing shaped, but I used clear worbla as the shape of the wing and attached the cellophane with spray adhesive and they turned out pretty cute! So that's one way to make them sturdy, it's just that clear worbla can get a tad pricy! Cellphane is just SO fragile, I wonder if backing it with like a clear vinyl or something would help. I'll update when I can get around to making another pair and kinda go crazy with different methods of putting wings together because I'd REALLY like to remake this video lol.

  • @ForgingSmores

    @ForgingSmores

    4 жыл бұрын

    Very good question and something i unfortunately have no experience in! Off the top of my head, you could make a harness from webbing going around the chest and over the shoulders (harnesses are always just experimentation until you get it right for you!) and have the back be a thermoplastic, attach screws at the middle point of the wings (the point that will be touching your back) and screw them through the thermoplastic and secure with hex nuts. Then you can cut tiny holes in your shirt or whatever you'll be wearing to thread the wings through. So it'd be like screw, shirt, thermoplastic, hex nut. I worry about the weight though, if they're smaller wings than these then it should work. Another way is to do the standard harness with the elastic going over your shoulders like a backpack. You'd see the harness but you can match the elastic to what you're wearing to help hide it a bit more. If you're topless, you could decorate the harness a bit to match the rest of your outfit and it makes it a bit more fun! I'd love to experiment with that actually, I plan to make another pair of wings this year, I'll try a corset-less option!!! 😊 Sorry for the lack of help, I've only ever experimented with corset supported wings!

    this is really weird but... the video is completely black for me. i can see the images if i mouse over the red line but the video itself, it's like there's nothing there, did something happen to the video?

    KZread's way of saying "this video is trash" LOL. No really though, that's super strange. I just watched it from my account, and from another account and it was fine. I've had that happen to me on mobile before, I just ended up having to restart KZread. If it still doesn't work, my friend Yvonne Williams with Back to Earth Creations has a wonderful wing tutorial as well!

    Okay so let me get this straight cause you worked over the pattern really fast and not close up. You ONLY connect the shaped wire pieces with like clear tape? And it stays?

    I got mine from Joannes which is a craft/fabric store here! If you have any craft stores nearby, go in and ask if they have any. It's also used for wrapping, so it may be in with the gift wrapping supplies. I'm not sure what stuff you can get from Amazon, I'm sure it's pricy to ship but try searching for cellophane on there and see if you can get some shipped to you www.amazon.com/Pacon-Iridescent-Film-Mother-Pearl/dp/B00Z3N9W62/ref=sr_1_26?keywords=cellophane&qid=1572476487&sr=8-26 I'm sorry I'm not much more help! I tried digging but I just keep getting recommended a Joannes located in Holland, Michigan lol, or just Amazon.

    Do you know if you have Got2BGlued hairspray in your country? Check a drustore in the hairspray section, it's a bright yellow bottle with got2b written on it. It's actually quite similar to a spray adhesive, but for hair XD It should work! If not, some clear drying glue or rubber cement would work :)! Spray adhesive is just faster, it's not necessary! Experiment with scrap cellophane until you find what works best for you!

    @@ForgingSmores thanks for responding! how structurally sound should the wings be at the wire and tape stage? im working on mine rn and they feel very flimsy at this stage, like the wire is gonna fall apart at the tape joints

    @@julianalicciardi I remember them being a bit flimsy like they'd fall apart also at the tape joints, but the cellophane is what helped keep them together. I don't have them anymore sadly, but I do want to make another pair and make them quite a bit stronger, I wonder if a dab of super glue would help.

    Cellophane is plastic😅???

  • @ForgingSmores

    @ForgingSmores

    There are apparently fake, and misnamed cellophane, real cellophane is supposed to burn like a piece of paper instead of shrinking like mine did, since cellophane is actually derived from wood. So, I must have gotten a plastic-based cellophane, I'm just not sure since the label didn't say anything about being "real" or not haha. So no, it's not supposed to be plastic but since I'm in the US and everything is plastic, it's probably a mix of things, labeled as cellophane but is actually plastic. Real cellophane is biodegradable though! :D It's quite an interesting thing to research, surprisingly lol. I'm also sure you didn't comment this to receive a novel on the confusing life story of cellophane, so I'm sorry LMAO
