Hello, it's been a while since I've made a studio vlog. I'm emerging from book writing mode and taking my time to figure out what's next for me! Since January, I've been working on an original design I've been dreaming of. The design is meaningful to me, as it brings together my culture and my craft. I decided to go with the butterfly knot because butterflies are good omens, representing freedom and transformation. The charm offers good blessings to the contents of the journal and the journal keeper.
The journals can be purchased on my shop: www.bittermelonbindery.com/shop
They are made to order, so please allow 4-6 weeks for turnaround time!

Wow! Very nice and time consuming. These one of a kind journals must be priced like artwork (which they are) and should be. You may want to get a printing brayer (roller or disk) to smooth out your inner cover liners instead of your hand or the bone folder. Keep in mind that every time you touch your book papers and clothe, even for a few seconds you transfer oils from your hands into them. Sometimes the finger marks will show up on the papers/clothes (and can not be removed). And maybe a sheet of white acid free tissue paper around your journals and bookmarks before adding the brown craft paper or inserting them in the envelopes??? It's the curator in me... I'm a journal fanatic. These are inspiring and works of art. Again, wow!!!

I've been waiting for a look at how you made these!! These books are absolutely stunning. I'm going to have to try some prototypes with that cover window design, it's so unique and ads so much character to the book. Wonderful work. Also hi Lucy!! She is too cute. My dog likes to do the same thing when I'm trying to get something done haha.

Very interesting and informative video! I never knew knots could be so beautiful. I will be looking for your book to be published. I think that your plexiglass and aluminum rulers are both very well made, designed, and finished. I hope you did not actually hit the "burn out" wall - intensely working for so long can be tough! Is Lucy's left hind leg OK? Beautiful books and video - thank you...

Hi! I’m having a really hard time finding good paper! Something that wont bleed through. What paper do you recommend? (Practically impossible to find 160gsm that’s not actual card stock, or is too rough on markers and pens!)

  • @sophiesergeant3158

Have you tried the Fabriano Accademia range? If it's accessible where you live, they have a 160 option which I haven't personally used, but the 120 option works really nicely for my sketchbooks. There isn't much bleed through and the surface is nice, the 160 version would probably fare similarly?

Finding paper is a constant challenge for me too. For art paper, I like to go to the art store and feel everything they have. I’ve used both glue bound and wire bound sketch pads, and I’ve cut down large sheets of watercolour paper. For writing papers, check out the paper mill store online if you’re in the US, 24 lb to 32 lb weights. Bookbinding with thick paper such as 160gsm mainly works for exposed sewing structures like Coptic Stitch. It took a lot of trial and error to find the sweet spot of what I like to use and what is suitable for bookbinding!

I also have a question for you. Are you still liking your guillotine cutter? You’ve been using it for a while now so I’m guessing you do. I need to buy something as my arthritis is slowing me down.😕 How long does the blade last before you need to sharpen or replace it? Also, does it cut book board. Sorry for all the questions, but there are so many cutters out there it’s hard to know which are the good ones! Thanks for any help or advice you can give me.

I love my guillotine cutter! I’ve been using my current one for over a year consistently and I think it’s almost time to sharpen or replace the blade. I recently learned I need to square up the part that clamps down on the book, which requires taking it apart. Not looking forward to that. I think that’s why I had trouble cutting book board, so I haven’t had success there. I think it’s excellent for the price. I’m not aware of alternative models unfortunately. They’re also called stack paper trimmer if that helps with your research!

@@bittermelonbindery Thank you! I remember seeing ‘stack paper trimmer’ when I was poking around so I will look more closely there. I can probably continue cutting board by hand (or ordering it pre-cut), but there is just too much paper to cut! Good luck square up the clamps!
