i always assumed the victorian ankle thing was a modern exaggeration born from how weird victorians could be about legs in general. people learn about how some victorians avoided saying the words legs or trousers, and sometimes covering up table legs, and they start making jokes about repressed victorians and their obsession with a cheeky ankle

I think you're probably right. In Agatha Christie's autobiography, she talks about how her Victorian grandmother taught her 'the Queen of Spain has no legs' and to say 'limbs' instead. Even decades later Agatha was a pretty proper person, but she wrote that even as a child she thought the obsession with avoiding legs was nonsensical. One of the few Victorian rules I have yet to find a reasonable explanation for. 🤷‍♀️

  • @taiyoqun

I have a good story about ankle showing. My great aunt once told me it was unacceptable that my ankles were showing because I was wearing short socks with a short skirt. Which is funny to me because she didn't seem to care about my beard or the fact I'm not a woman. What she found outrageous about me dressing like that was the ankles, and I think that's funny. My grandma had a similar one. She saw me with a long beautiful skirt and a pink t-shirt and instantly looked disappointed in me, and told me that I had to change. Her words? That t-shirt was absolutely killing the skirt and insisted I put on a shirt that complimented it, even offered to go buy something. And honestly? I love this kind of discrimination. Old people who have a strong sense of appropriate dressing and want you to look dashing in their eyes.

I know it was a 'thing' in the US during the same time period of 1895. When I was much younger, I saw a very old man on The Johnny Carson Show. He had been a young boy at the peak of the old west (c. 1880). He told a story about sitting in this old western town with no roads; sitting with friends at the general store. He said that every once in a while, a woman would lift her skirts to step up onto the porch... and the boys would 'catch a glimpse of ankle'. I cannot explain to you the wistful look in this old man's eyes at the memory, it was endearing. To them, this was, if not scandalous, at least a bit naughty.

I must admit I was taken by surprise, as my initial keyword search was "nonfiction book writing"... alas one thing lead to another and I was COMPLETELY enraptured by this posting. My goodness, you are quite captivating - unique, beautiful without pretension, and very witty. I adore that you put in your thoughts about society looking back at each era as less than, and the current state of things being so much better than - obviously as a society we are continuing to grow, and for some reason we can't help but shame the past while forgetting the present. Loved it all. I subscribed to your channel because of this video alone. Thank you for this breath of fresh air and an added giggle to my day.

I feel the "it's not so much the ankle itself, but the act of exposing the ankle" makes so much sense. I'm Finnish, it's relatively common to go to the sauna with friends and family of all genders, butt-naked, and in this situation not even genitals are Erotic in any way. But someone, say, intentionally dropping a bra strap so that one more centimeter of SHOULDER is bared can still be seductive in another context :D

I'd say you've bullseyed it here. I seem to recall that in pre-Meiji Japan the back of a woman's neck was their 'sexy Victorian ankle', or the thighs - especially the _inner_ thigh (shudder) - in Polynesia, not for any intrinsic quality of the area in question but for the _implication_ of impending sexytimes. I imagine there's an equivalent everywhere, like how America considered the female navel in the 60s the same way it still treats nipples. Like your sauna example, total nudity can be unerotic while just that little bit of extra exposure can be scandalous depending on context.

I was lucky enough to have my great-grandmother as a close part of my life until I was 39 years old. In her later years, one of her favorite pastimes was to browse through old photos. Her favorite was a picture on her wedding day, atop a wagon, headed to her new home with her new husband. EVERY time she held that photo in her gnarled fingers she would say through tears, "Your Grampa never did see my ankles until that day." It WAS a 'thing' to her. It represented her virtue and chastity. They were married in 1911 when she was 18 years old. Whether it was a thing to more urban folks, to her in rural America, it was vitally important and anything else would have been scandalous.

Nearby was a man who saw her ankle and fell madly in love with her on the spot. So he found out who she was and began courting her hoping she'd fall in love with him. She did! Both of my great grandfathers died shortly after I was born but I was blessed to know both of my great grandmothers. One lived to be 94 and she spent every summer with us. She taught me a lot!

Coming in here with an anecdote for your evidence box: My maternal grandfather was born in 1903, if I'm not mistaken, and he apparently admitted in the past that he and the boys used to love rainy days simply because the girls would have to hitch up their skirts to keep them out of the mud - thus exposing much scandalous ankle to their excitement. The thing is though....this is just going to bring in all the weird foot fetish people. You can't show ankles without also showing feet and I'm pretty sure it's all just creepy foot fetish people who subscribe. There are probably thousands of people making money off of feet pics on only fans. I personally am not into feet so I don't know if part of being into the feet include the ankle or not? But frankly men will sexualize any part of the woman's body. Shoulders, knee caps, ears, necks, hair (or lack of hair)etc. So I definitely think a lot of people unironically find ankles sexy.

When I did research for my bachelor's thesis in history, I came across an "article" in a local newspaper from 1902 where a particularly charming gentleman made some complaints. His concern was the filthy state of one of the main walking streets, as the women were forced to slightly LIFT THEIR SKIRTS in order to not get horse manure on them, thus showing more ankle than what was deemed appropriate. The very same man also complained about alcohol permits and varieté shows with female performers. Always gave me a good chuckle💃

I know I'm late to the party, but I've only just discovered your channel. The allure of the ankle is, first, that it's being offered. It's an invitation to explore what is in proximity--and what's in proximity to what's in proximity. It is not the ankle, in and of itself, that engenders the attraction, but the brazenness of the invitation. The allure of the ankle is, second, that it is an indicator as to the shape of the rest of the body. A well-turned ankle (and, I must say, you have quite exceptionally well-turned ankles) suggests that the shape of the woman's entire body--hidden by many layers of cloth--is also of a pleasing shape. And... had I known of this when it was happening, I would have signed up. Not only to see some beautiful photos of you in period dress, playing wonderfully to the camera (and showing those well-turned ankles), but to also contribute to you and the charities you support. Perhaps you could lend your branding to a paid-subscription "Victorian spicy ankle" channel where people could donate content to raise money for charity. I'd subscribe.
