This petticoat is adorable.

I was at the charity store earlier. There was a crinoline for a wedding dress. Someone had made this with the narrow hem and had sewn on plastic boning to add shape to the bottom, along with the usual netting. I have not seen this before, thought that was a great finish. Just thought I would pass this along..... Love the petticoat, under pinning of all sorts seem to be my thing. And the machine ruffles are just the thing! Love the fabric too

I did that for years and then just kind of accidentally stumbled on this method after seeing someone do something similar with a special foot and an antique featherweight machine. I was so excited when it worked on my modern machine!

Ok, I need this under my Abayas. It makes the whole dress sit better and it looks nice on it's own too...

A good petticoat makes whatever it is worn under look so much better! It gives a wonderful fullness to a skirt and makes the fabric hang better!

I somehow missed this video when it came out, so I’m here from the second part. I’m midway through my own five gore, unpleated petticoat and trumpet skirt, so it’s very timely.

Hahaha! I usually sew in an off-site studio but I've been working from home because of the quarantine. I had forgotten how much those little devils interrupt my sewing!

As do I- my pfp is actually my cat snuggling up in some fabric that I’m trying to sew, with the sewing machine right behind her. It’s a common problem, as my sewing desk/table is out in the loungeroom. There’s no way to lock her out.

I got a first edition of the Nancy Bradfield book from my local library for £1. Not sure how it happened but I can only imagine they had no idea what it was they had 😂

I don’t know why but I really enjoy making petticoats, but the really nice ones need mock ups and for whatever reason, as long as there’s nothing horribly wrong with it I’ll keep the mock ups I like and just use them as petticoats underneath my nice petticoats. I just can’t bear to get rid of them, and they’re in the right shape anyways so it’s not like it’ll harm the silhouette

That is such a beautiful illustration. This is going to be fun project to watch!

I'm also here from part two: I must've not been in a video mood when this first part came out. I am so excited to see your interpretation of one of these dresses! I always feel like when I see them recreated, they usually look very big and bulky à la 1980s fashion proportions whereas in contemporary fashion plates and photos they look much more proportionally elegant. I always wonder why that is, if it is a change in the way they've been recreated or if it is just a matter of my own perception. Excited to see how you go about it and I love the name you have chosen for it!

I think proportion on Edwardian garments is really critical and *very very very* different to our modern brains, so you have to be really careful about getting everything right. I also think having really big hair/hats is a key part of that proportion and if don't go big enough the dress looks like it is consuming you! I'll have to make sure I get the styling right on this one!

@@misswazzra Have you tried wrapping paper? Some brands have gridlines printed on the back. That will work for the pattern scaling, you'd have to transfer the markings to your toilet fabric.

OMG that illustration in that book is beautiful and making it a reality is amazing. Can't wait for the rest. I went wow at the instant ruffles. Good trick for ruffling.

Well this is my first try and it went pretty well, so I think it's possible for anyone to do it with some trial and error! Not quite ready to attempt a bodice, but a skirt was a good start!

This was great! I just got the same Janet Arnold book in the mail a few weeks ago. I am so excited to see how you transfer the pattern in it. Math scares me too lol.

is "patterns of fashion" only available in inch-measurments, or is there a european version where they have cm? it would be a pain in the ass to work with patterns in inches and always having to order the gridded paper from the us

I like the way you think!

Turrns out "organdy" means "Organza" in German... But it does not refer to the same type of fabric (as far as I know). German Organza is this super lightweight, see through, often polyester stuff used for tacky curtains, while your "organdy" obviously refers to a beautiful woven, stiff but only kind of see-through fabric you used. I need your type of organdy. What now?
